For a live scene, set up a webcam or camera and encoder, connect it to YouTube Live, and keep the camera, encoder, power and internet connection running. For prerecorded footage, a cloud streaming service can loop an uploaded video without leaving a home computer on.
Plan separately for uninterrupted viewing and for a saved replay: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A single 24/7 session therefore is not a reliable way to create a complete archive.
Choose a live fireplace or a prerecorded loop
A camera pointed at the fire shows the cabin as it is now. It needs to remain powered, connected and operating for the entire broadcast. A prerecorded video can play repeatedly, but it is not a live view; you can run it through an encoder or use a cloud service intended for continuous prerecorded streams. YouTube supports webcam and encoder workflows and lists cloud tools for 24/7 prerecorded streaming (YouTube Live streaming options; YouTube encoder directory).
- Live scene: Choose this if the point is to show the actual fireplace in real time. A webcam is a supported option; an encoder gives more control or lets you use external video hardware.
- Prerecorded footage: Choose this if you want a consistent loop or cannot keep a camera setup running. Confirm that your chosen service supports your format and intended use, and check its current terms, limits, reliability and cost.
Prepare your YouTube channel
Before setting up equipment, check that the channel is eligible to stream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable Live well before the night you plan to start (YouTube: Get started with live streaming; YouTube: Stream using an encoder).

Use footage and audio you have the rights to broadcast. A fireplace recording may include more than the fire: check for background music, television audio, other people’s content, or material captured without permission. YouTube’s copyright and live-stream policies apply whether the video is live camera footage or a prerecorded loop. Read the current YouTube encoder guidance and applicable YouTube policies before going live.
Set up a live camera stream
1. Place and power the camera
Frame the hearth so the fire is visible without placing the camera or cables where heat, sparks or foot traffic could damage them. Test the view at night: flames can change exposure rapidly, and a camera’s automatic exposure may make the surrounding room too dark or the fire too bright. Secure the camera and its power supply for the whole session. A USB webcam can work if it suits the placement and lighting; existing camera equipment may also be enough.
2. Create the stream in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Create a new stream or schedule one for the intended start time.
- Copy the stream server URL and stream key shown for that stream into your encoder.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel; do not show it on screen or share it publicly (YouTube: Stream using an encoder; YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder).
3. Connect an encoder and inspect the preview
Configure your encoder to capture the camera and send the stream to YouTube using the server URL and key. YouTube’s available instructions do not establish one best resolution or bitrate for every camera and connection, so do not treat a generic setting as a guarantee. Choose a stream quality your upload connection can sustain, then verify the incoming preview in Live Control Room before starting the public broadcast.

Check the picture, framing, exposure, focus and audio. If the stream is meant to be ambient, listen for unwanted noise such as wind, fan hum or conversation. Decide whether you want natural fire sounds or silence; do not add music unless you have the necessary rights.
Check the connection and test before going overnight
YouTube recommends testing the connection and stream and retaining about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream’s bitrate. Include other traffic on the same connection—such as household uploads, a second stream or a backup encoder—when judging available capacity (YouTube: Streaming tips).
- Run a test stream before the planned broadcast and inspect YouTube’s preview, not just the encoder’s local display.
- Check that the camera, encoder, router and any required lighting or audio equipment have reliable power.
- Test the whole path for long enough to expose problems that might appear after startup, including network drops, overheating or sleep settings.
- Check YouTube’s stream health while live. YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video quality rather than assuming a successful start means the stream remains healthy.
- If an archive matters, make a local recording as well and verify that the file plays and is accessible after a test.
Plan for continuity and the replay separately
One continuous session is convenient for viewers who want to leave the fireplace on, but YouTube’s archive guidance puts a hard caveat on very long streams: streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, while a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on very long streams (YouTube: Stream using an encoder; YouTube: Archive live streams).

- If one uninterrupted watch page matters most: You can keep one session running, but do not promise viewers a complete replay afterward.
- If a YouTube archive matters: End and restart sessions before they reach 12 hours, aligning with YouTube’s stated under-12-hour archive guidance. This interrupts the continuous broadcast and creates separate sessions; it does not guarantee an archive in every circumstance.
- If a complete recording is essential: Record locally as a separate safeguard, check the recording for integrity and make sure storage is sufficient. A local file does not change YouTube’s archive behavior.

Troubleshoot common overnight failures
You cannot start a live stream
Check channel verification and whether the channel has had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours for it to become available. Confirm that you are using the correct YouTube account and Live Control Room stream.
The encoder does not connect to YouTube
Recheck that the encoder has the server URL and stream key for the stream you created. Make sure the key was copied completely and has not been replaced or reset in YouTube Studio. Keep the key private.

The stream buffers or loses quality
Check YouTube’s stream health and the actual upload capacity while the stream is running. YouTube recommends about 20% bandwidth headroom over the stream bitrate; reduce the stream’s demands or address competing network traffic if that margin is not available. Test again before relying on the setup overnight.

The picture or sound is wrong
Inspect the YouTube preview and the camera’s framing, focus and exposure. Check whether the encoder is capturing the intended microphone or no audio, as appropriate. Listen for unwanted background sound, and confirm that any audio included is yours to use.
The stream stops while the room is unattended
Check power, camera and encoder operation, network stability, computer sleep settings, and any software or device interruptions. A local camera workflow depends on those components remaining available. For prerecorded footage, consider whether a cloud service better suits a stream that should continue without a home computer.
The replay is missing or incomplete
Check the session length first: YouTube says a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. For future broadcasts where a replay matters, plan shorter sessions and record locally as a separate copy; neither step should be described as a guarantee of a complete YouTube archive.
