Can a Raspberry Pi 5 Stream a Prerecorded Playlist to YouTube 24/7?

A Raspberry Pi 5 can send prerecorded video to YouTube Live, but an unattended 24/7 stream needs testing, monitoring and a recovery plan. YouTube may not capture streams longer than 12 hours.

Yes—a Raspberry Pi 5 can send prerecorded video to YouTube Live, using software encoding. But that does not make it a proven, unattended 24/7 service: you must test your files and settings, keep the Pi powered and connected, and plan for failures. There is also an important replay limitation: YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.

What the Raspberry Pi 5 can—and cannot—promise

Raspberry Pi’s documentation includes a Pi 5 video-streaming example using the software encoder x264enc. That confirms a documented route for encoding and sending video; it does not prove that every playlist, resolution or frame rate will run reliably around the clock. No verified 24/7 benchmark for a specific Pi 5 configuration is established here. Test the exact media and output settings you intend to use before leaving a stream unattended. Raspberry Pi streaming documentation

YouTube supports encoder-based live streams. You provide the encoder with YouTube’s stream URL and stream key, then check the broadcast in Live Control Room. Live streaming must be enabled for your channel; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Your channel must also be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. Plan around the 12-hour archive limit

YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours. If a live stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. A single continuous 24-hour broadcast is therefore not a dependable way to create a complete YouTube replay. If you need a copy, record the program locally or plan shorter segments, and verify that the resulting files are complete. YouTube: Archive live streams

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What you need for a Pi-based setup

  • Raspberry Pi 5 and power: Raspberry Pi recommends a 27W USB-C power supply for Pi 5. A reliable power source matters for a sustained stream, but the recommendation alone does not establish uninterrupted operation. Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation
  • Boot storage and network: Headless setup requires boot media and a network connection. Keep the playlist files on storage the Pi can access throughout the broadcast. Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation
  • Cooling and physical placement: Consider cooling and ventilation for a workload that will run continuously. The available documentation does not establish a specific cooler requirement or temperature target for this use.
  • Playlist and encoder workflow: Use a process that advances through or loops your local video files and sends the encoded output to YouTube. Raspberry Pi’s Pi 5 example uses software encoding; do not assume settings from another machine or encoder will perform identically.
  • YouTube stream credentials: Obtain the stream URL and key from YouTube’s live-stream setup. Treat the key like a password: do not include it in a public script, screenshot, log, or article example.

Set it up and test before going unattended

  1. Enable live streaming and confirm channel eligibility. In YouTube Studio, open the live-stream creation workflow and complete any required activation or verification. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
  2. Prepare the Pi and media. Set up the Pi 5 with boot storage, network access and the recommended 27W USB-C supply. Put the complete playlist somewhere locally accessible, and check that the files play as expected.
  3. Configure the encoder workflow. Follow Raspberry Pi’s streaming example as a starting point: its Pi 5 software-encoding replacement is x264enc speed-preset=1 threads=1. The documentation presents this as an encoder element, not a complete ready-to-run playlist command or a guaranteed profile for every source file. Build the looping or playlist handling around your own media and test the result. Raspberry Pi streaming documentation
  4. Enter YouTube’s stream details privately. Configure the encoder with the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube’s live setup. Keep the key out of public configuration and rotate it if it is exposed.
  5. Start an unlisted test. Check the picture, sound, playlist transitions and YouTube’s incoming-stream status in Live Control Room. Test for long enough to expose issues that would not appear in a brief preview, and verify any local recording you intend to rely on. YouTube recommends testing encoder setup, monitoring audio and video quality, and checking local archive files. YouTube encoder guidance
  6. Arrange recovery and monitoring. Configure the process to start at boot and restart after an unexpected exit; monitor the Pi remotely and check that the stream remains live. These are practical engineering safeguards, not guarantees of uptime from Raspberry Pi or YouTube. Decide how you will respond if power, network, software or YouTube interrupts the broadcast.
  7. Go public only after the test passes. Monitor the public stream and preserve a local copy if a complete archive matters. A stream lasting over 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube.

Encoding settings: test the output you actually want

The Pi 5 documentation establishes a software-encoding example, but it does not establish a universal resolution, frame rate, bitrate or keyframe interval for every playlist and network. Choose the intended YouTube output profile, then validate it with the exact files and encoder workflow on your Pi. A setting that works for a short sample is not proof of stable 24/7 operation.

Check for dropped or stalled frames, audio/video synchronization, clean transitions between playlist items, and sustained operation under the conditions where the Pi will run. If the output is unstable, reduce the workload or choose a different tested configuration rather than assuming the Pi can match a desktop workstation. Keep the stream key private while adjusting or sharing configuration.

Copyright, archived content and monetization

Clear the rights before streaming

YouTube’s livestream terms make the creator responsible for having the necessary rights for live and archived content, including applicable music licensing rights. The fact that a video is prerecorded, publicly available or part of a documentary playlist does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. Check rights for every video, soundtrack, image and other included material. YouTube livestream terms and conditions

Do not treat a looping playlist as monetization approval

YouTube’s July 15, 2025 clarification describes repetitive or mass-produced material as inauthentic content and says reused content is evaluated at the channel level. Repeating a playlist does not itself establish monetization eligibility; rights and the channel’s original value matter. The clarification was not a blanket ban on livestreaming prerecorded material. What can fail, and what to check

Symptom Likely area to investigate Practical response
YouTube does not receive the stream Live streaming may not be enabled, activation may still be pending, or the encoder may have incorrect stream details. Check channel eligibility and activation status, then re-enter the stream URL and key from the current YouTube live setup.
The stream stops after the Pi or encoder runs for a while Power, network, process exit or sustained workload. Check power and network stability, inspect the encoder process, and configure restart-at-boot and restart-on-failure behavior. Test monitoring and recovery before unattended use.
Video stalls or looks wrong Encoding workload, source-file compatibility or chosen output settings. Test the exact files and intended output profile; check playback and stream status in Live Control Room. Adjust the workload and retest rather than relying on an unverified performance assumption.
A replay is missing or incomplete A broadcast exceeded YouTube’s archive window or an archive was not verified. Keep a local recording or use planned segments, then confirm that each resulting file is complete.
A stream key may have been exposed Public script, screenshot, log or shared configuration. Do not publish the key; replace it in YouTube’s stream settings if it has been disclosed, then update the encoder privately.
