Before investing in equipment, check that your channel can livestream, test the setup, plan for monitoring and disconnections, and decide how you will preserve recordings: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be archived.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. It must be verified and have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s music guidance recommends enabling and verifying live streaming at least 24 hours before your first planned broadcast. YouTube: Get started with live streaming and YouTube for Artists: Livestreaming.
- A computer and encoder. YouTube supports encoder streaming, and OBS Studio is a free, open-source option. An existing computer is a reasonable budget starting point; the available guidance does not establish a minimum computer specification. OBS Studio.
- Stable internet and power, plus someone able to check the stream. A continuous broadcast depends on the computer, network and power staying available. YouTube recommends monitoring a live stream rather than assuming it will run unattended. YouTube: Tips for live streaming.
- Music and visual assets you are authorized to use. Devotional subject matter or Tamil language does not remove copyright obligations.
- A local recording plan. YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube: Archive live streams.
Choose a budget setup
Start with equipment you already own. The lowest upfront-cost approach is usually an existing computer running OBS; it avoids buying a dedicated machine, though that computer must remain powered on and connected for the broadcast. If you cannot leave your everyday computer running, a dedicated computer is an option, not a documented requirement. A separate machine still needs reliable power and internet, and you will need a way to monitor it. The available YouTube and OBS guidance does not specify a minimum hardware configuration or establish comparative costs or uptime for these approaches.
| Approach | Upfront cost | Always-on burden | Monitoring and recovery |
|---|---|---|---|
| Existing computer running OBS | Avoids a new computer purchase if the machine is suitable; no exact cost is established. | The computer must stay on, connected, and able to run the encoder. | You can inspect the host directly, but network or power loss can interrupt the broadcast and require recovery. |
| Dedicated computer running OBS | May require buying equipment; no minimum specification or price is established. | A separate machine still needs continuous power and internet. | It separates streaming from everyday use, but it does not eliminate monitoring or interruptions. |
| StreamNeo cloud service | Plans vary by duration; the first day is free without a card. See the cloud section below. | Your home computer does not have to stay on for the stream to continue. | StreamNeo says it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream; this does not guarantee uninterrupted service. |
Prepare the channel and protect your music rights
Enable livestreaming ahead of time
Check the channel’s live access and verification before scheduling a first broadcast. YouTube for Artists advises enabling and verifying at least 24 hours in advance. Confirm access in YouTube Studio rather than waiting until the planned start.
Clear every recording and visual
YouTube’s livestream terms make the content provider responsible for having the rights needed to use live content, including music licensing rights from relevant artists, labels, publishers and other royalty participants. A song’s devotional lyrics, traditional subject, or availability on another YouTube channel does not prove that you can rebroadcast its recording.

#1 Best Overall
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can cause a placeholder warning and interrupt or terminate the broadcast if the material remains; a stream can also be terminated after a copyright or Community Guidelines strike. If you have a license for third-party tracks, ask the rights owner or distributor whether your channel must be added to its Content ID allowlist. A license alone may not prevent automated interruptions. YouTube for Artists recommends coordinating with the label or distributor when planning to use copyright-protected music in a stream. YouTube: Copyright issues with live streams and YouTube for Artists: Livestreaming.
Set up a continuous stream with OBS
- Make a rights-cleared playlist. Gather the audio and any artwork or video you own or are authorized to use. Arrange the tracks in the intended order and check the full playlist for gaps, unwanted silence, abrupt endings and visual changes. Do not use recordings copied from another channel without permission.
- Create a scene in OBS. Add the authorized audio and visual sources you intend viewers to see. Set levels so the music is audible without clipping, and watch and listen to the scene before connecting it to YouTube. OBS is an encoder; it does not grant rights to the material you play.
- Connect OBS to YouTube using the stream key. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live and create or select an encoder stream. Copy the stream key shown for that stream into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, and reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.
- Test before going public. Use a private or unlisted test, then inspect the Live Control Room preview. Confirm the correct audio and picture arrive, that viewers can access the stream as intended, and that the channel is not receiving a copyright interruption. YouTube recommends a test stream and continuous monitoring.
- Start the broadcast and keep watch. Start streaming from OBS, confirm the Live Control Room indicates the stream is live, and check playback from a viewer’s perspective. During the broadcast, monitor the connection and audio/video rather than treating a successful start as proof the stream will remain live.
- Keep a local recording backup. Enable or make a local recording if your storage and computer can support it. YouTube recommends a local archive backup. Plan how to preserve the intended program in manageable sessions: streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams over 12 hours may not be captured. YouTube does not prescribe a specific restart schedule.
Plan for interruptions and archives
A 24/7 schedule is an operating goal, not a guarantee that one broadcast can stay live indefinitely. A home setup depends on uninterrupted power, internet and encoder operation, and YouTube can interrupt a stream for reasons including rights enforcement. Decide who will check the broadcast, how they will notice a failure, and how they will restart it. Do not promise viewers a complete YouTube replay for a stream longer than 12 hours; retain a local copy and make a session plan that preserves the material you want available.

Monetization is a separate question from copyright
Clearing music rights does not by itself make a channel eligible for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policies apply to livestreams, and its July 15, 2025 clarification identifies repetitive or mass-produced material as “inauthentic content.” A continuously repeated playlist is not automatically eligible to earn revenue; review the current policy and assess the channel’s content as a whole before relying on monetization. Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start a livestream. | Channel verification, live access, or a restriction within the previous 90 days. | Check live eligibility in YouTube Studio and complete any required verification before the planned broadcast. |
| The Live Control Room does not receive the encoder. | The stream key may be wrong, the wrong stream may be selected, or the encoder may not be sending. | Confirm the selected YouTube stream and key match, then restart the encoder connection. If the key was exposed, reset it in Studio. |
| The stream is interrupted with a copyright notice or placeholder. | A track may match third-party material, or a licensed channel may not be allowlisted. | Stop using the disputed material until rights are resolved; contact the rights owner or distributor about channel allowlisting for licensed tracks. |
| The computer stream stops unexpectedly. | Power, internet or encoder interruption. | Check the host and network, restore the encoder connection, and verify the stream in the Live Control Room. A continuous stream needs an active response plan. |
| A long broadcast has no YouTube replay. | The stream exceeded the under-12-hour archive guidance. | Use the local recording backup and organize future programming so the desired sessions can be preserved; YouTube does not promise capture for streams longer than 12 hours. |
