If your music is stored as ordinary, unprotected audio files, connect the USB drive, copy the files from File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac), paste them onto the drive, verify the transfer, and eject it safely. Apple Music and Spotify subscription downloads usually remain playable only inside their apps, while DRM-free iTunes Store purchases and your own imported files can generally be copied. Whether the songs play in a car stereo or other device also depends on its supported file system, codec, folder structure, and file names.
Before you start
- A USB flash drive with enough usable space. The capacity shown by Windows or macOS is lower than the number printed on the packaging.
- A Windows PC or Mac containing the actual audio files, not merely playlist entries or cloud placeholders.
- The manual for the destination device, especially if the drive is for a car stereo, television, game console, speaker, or DJ system.
- A backup of anything already on the USB drive. Formatting normally erases all existing content.
Copying and playback are separate tests: a successful transfer proves that the files reached the drive, not that the target hardware supports them.
Check whether the music is copyable
Ordinary local files
MP3, unprotected AAC/M4A, WAV, FLAC, ALAC, OGG, and similar files in a normal folder can usually be copied like any other computer file. A CD rip is also copyable after the disc has been imported into files.
Purchased downloads
Current iTunes Store songs are DRM-free “iTunes Plus” AAC files, normally 256 kbps, according to Apple’s usage-rights documentation. Apple says purchased media can be permanently downloaded to a compatible Mac or Windows computer (Apple Support). The destination still has to support AAC.

Subscription and phone downloads
Offline tracks downloaded inside Apple Music, Spotify, or another subscription service are generally app-managed copies, not independent files for arbitrary USB playback. Spotify distinguishes catalog downloads from user-owned audio files in its Local Files instructions. Music visible only in a phone app is not automatically exposed as ordinary files; use the original computer files, redownload an authorized purchase, transfer unprotected files, or re-rip a personally owned CD. Cloud-only files must be downloaded to the computer first.
Choose a compatible audio format
Use the existing file when the destination supports it; converting everything to MP3 is not automatically better and can reduce quality.
| Format | Typical compatibility | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| MP3 | Broadest support, especially on older car stereos | Lossy compression |
| AAC/M4A | Common on Apple devices and newer equipment | Some older players do not recognize it |
| WAV | Recognized by some hardware | Large files and inconsistent metadata support |
| FLAC/ALAC | Useful for lossless storage | Many older stereos and inexpensive players lack support |
| OGG/Opus | Efficient on compatible software | Less universal in consumer hardware |
Check the destination device’s manual before converting. If conversion is necessary, test a few tracks, preserve metadata, and keep the lossless originals elsewhere.

Estimate how much music fits
Capacity depends on duration and bitrate, not a fixed number of songs. As rough storage estimates, 128 kbps MP3 uses about 1 MB per minute, 256 kbps AAC or MP3 about 2 MB per minute, and 1,411 kbps CD-quality WAV about 10 MB per minute. Lossless sizes vary by recording and codec. Leave room for folders, metadata, and future additions.

Copy music from Windows
Locate the drive and source files
- Insert the flash drive.
- Open File Explorer, select This PC, and identify the USB drive by its name or capacity.
- Open the source folder, commonly Music, Downloads, or a custom library folder. Confirm that the items are real audio files.
Copy the tracks
- Select tracks, albums, or folders. Hold Ctrl to select non-adjacent items.
- Right-click and choose Copy, or press Ctrl+C.
- Open the USB drive in another File Explorer window. Create a
Musicfolder, artist folders, or album folders if useful. - Right-click an empty area and choose Paste, or press Ctrl+V. Windows also offers Send to an external storage device for selected files. Microsoft documents the process in its external-storage guide.
- Wait for the copy dialog to finish before disconnecting anything.
Verify and eject
- Open several tracks directly from the USB drive.
- Compare the track count and, for an important transfer, the folder size.
- In the taskbar notification area, right-click Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media, select the USB device, and wait for Safe To Remove Hardware. Microsoft describes this workflow here.
Copy music from a Mac
- Connect the drive directly or through a compatible USB/USB-C adapter.
- Open Finder and find the drive under Locations. Locate the music in the Music folder, Downloads, Finder, or another library location.
- Select tracks, albums, or folders. Press Command+C, or Control-click and choose Copy.
- Open the USB drive and press Command+V, or drag the selection onto it. Copy-and-paste makes the intent clear; dragging between volumes generally copies rather than deleting the original.
- Wait for the transfer to complete. Apple documents connected storage and Finder copying in its storage-device guide.
To disconnect, click the drive’s Eject button in Finder, choose File > Eject, or Control-click the drive and choose Eject. If macOS refuses, close players, Finder windows, copy dialogs, and other apps using the drive; Apple notes that an in-use drive may not eject.
Format the USB drive for your equipment
Formatting is optional and destructive. Back up the drive before starting, and choose the file system based on the playback device rather than simply selecting the newest option.

| Use case | Starting choice | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Current Windows and Mac interchange | exFAT | Older stereos and players may not recognize it |
| Older car stereo or embedded player | FAT32 (often shown as MS-DOS (FAT)) | One file cannot exceed 4 GiB; formatting erases data |
| Windows-only archive | NTFS or exFAT | NTFS is less convenient outside Windows |
| Mac-focused use | APFS | Many Windows computers and consumer players do not support it |
Microsoft’s file-system comparison documents FAT32’s 4 GiB maximum individual file size. This rarely affects ordinary songs but can matter for long recordings, concert files, audiobooks, or video. The destination device’s manual takes priority: exFAT is not universal.
Format on macOS
- Open Disk Utility.
- Select the external drive itself, not merely a folder or volume.
- Choose Erase, enter a name, select the required format, and click Erase. Apple describes this workflow in its storage-device guide.
Format on Windows
- Back up the contents.
- In File Explorer, right-click the USB drive under This PC and choose Format.
- Select the file system required by the destination, confirm the erase warning, and start the format.
- Copy music only after formatting finishes. Available options vary with the drive, Windows configuration, and manufacturer utilities.

- Keep names reasonably short and avoid unusual symbols on older hardware.
- Prefix tracks with consistent numbers such as
01,02, and03; some devices sort alphabetically. - Preserve embedded artist, album, and track metadata where possible.
- Do not expect ordinary copying to transfer playlists, ratings, play counts, or smart-playlist relationships.
- Some players read only the root directory or a limited folder depth, so test a shallow
Musicfolder if necessary.
Apple Music and iTunes purchases
Apple Music subscription downloads
Apple Music offline downloads are associated with the service and its apps, not ordinary MP3 files that can be dragged to a flash drive. Apple describes cross-device library access in its Music guide. User-owned files imported into the Music app remain ordinary files and can be copied if you locate them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRedownload an iTunes Store purchase on Mac
- Open Apple Music and choose Account > Purchased.
- Download the song or album.
- Locate the resulting file in Finder and copy it to the USB drive. Apple’s current Mac instructions are at Redownload music from the iTunes Store.
Redownload a purchase on Windows
- Open the Apple Music app and select iTunes Store in the sidebar.
- Select Purchased and download the song or album.
- Locate the file in File Explorer and copy it to the drive. Apple’s current Windows workflow is documented here.
Older protected purchases may have different authorization and playback restrictions; do not assume every historical iTunes file works on every USB player. Apple also notes that audio files from elsewhere may not always play in Apple Music (troubleshooting guide).

Phone-to-USB transfers
The most reliable route is music source → computer as ordinary files → USB flash drive. Android may expose unprotected audio through a file browser and USB connection. iPhone content is usually easier to obtain through the authorized computer library or a redownloadable purchase. Protected streaming downloads should not be bypassed; avoid DRM-removal or questionable “converter” services.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the copied music will not play
- Confirm that the device supports USB music playback, not USB charging only.
- Check its required file system; older models may require FAT32.
- Check codec and extension support. Try a few standard MP3 files if AAC, FLAC, or ALAC is rejected.
- Test a small set of files in the root directory or a shallow
Musicfolder. - Use short, simple, numbered filenames and standard metadata.
- Check documented capacity, file-count, or folder-depth limits.
- Try another USB port or another drive, then eject and reconnect properly.
If the drive does not appear, try another port, remove hubs or adapters, and test it on another computer. Windows users can inspect Disk Management; Mac users can inspect Disk Utility. Do not erase the drive until important data is backed up.
Common copy errors
- Drive full: remove duplicates or old backups after checking hidden files and the actual capacity.
- Write-protected: check a physical lock switch, permissions, or drive health.
- File too large: FAT32 rejects an individual file over 4 GiB; use exFAT only if the destination supports it.
- Copy stops: close players using the source, copy smaller batches, try another port, and check the drive for errors.
- Greyed-out or missing track: it may be a subscription download, a missing library path, a cloud-only item, or a purchase requiring the correct Apple Account and authorization.
- Files disappear or capacity behaves strangely: suspect a failing or counterfeit drive and copy important material elsewhere before testing or formatting.
Choosing a drive or adapter
A reputable USB-A or dual USB-A/USB-C drive with real capacity, the correct connector, return protection, and a warranty is usually sufficient. See SanDisk’s USB flash-drive range for a vendor starting point. A USB-C-to-USB-A adapter may help Macs and laptops with USB-C ports; Apple lists accessories at its USB-C accessories page. For a very large archive or computer backups, an external SSD may be more suitable than a flash drive; Samsung’s portable SSD range is at Samsung. Connector convenience does not guarantee codec or file-system compatibility, and expensive storage does not improve audio quality.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I copy Apple Music songs to a USB stick?
Only if they are your own ordinary audio files or DRM-free purchases that you have downloaded to the computer. Apple Music subscription downloads are app-managed offline copies, not general-purpose USB files.
Do playlists transfer when I copy a folder?
No. Drag-and-drop copies audio files and their embedded metadata, not cloud-library relationships, ratings, play counts, or smart playlists.
Is a USB flash drive a backup?
It is a backup only when another verified copy remains elsewhere. Do not make the USB stick the sole copy of an irreplaceable collection.
