How to Copy FFmpeg YouTube Stream Logs From a VPS for Troubleshooting

Find where FFmpeg logs were written, save a fresh report or export the relevant systemd journal window, then download the file with scp and compare its timestamps with YouTube stream-health errors.

To copy FFmpeg logs from a VPS, first find where the running process sends its output—or make a report file on the next run—then download that file from your local computer with scp. Existing systemd services may log to the journal; other setups may write to a terminal, supervisor, or redirected file. You cannot create a complete report retroactively if the running process did not save its output.

Choose the log source that matches how FFmpeg was started

Situation Where to look Limitation
Starting or restarting FFmpeg Have FFmpeg write a report with -report or FFREPORT. The report covers that invocation. -report enables debug-level verbosity and can produce a large file.
Already running under systemd Query the journal for the actual service unit. This works only if the process output is connected to the journal and your account has permission.
Already running another way Check the process supervisor, terminal session, or configured stdout/stderr file. The location depends on how the VPS was configured; output not retained there may not be recoverable.

FFmpeg normally logs to stderr. Identify whether the process is still running, how it was launched, and the real service name or output path before collecting anything.

Save logs from a new FFmpeg run

Use a timestamped report

Run the existing FFmpeg command with -report added:

ffmpeg -report [your existing FFmpeg input and output arguments]

The bracketed words are explanatory, not literal shell syntax: retain the input, output, and other arguments from your actual command. Run it from a directory where the account can write. FFmpeg puts a timestamp-named report in its current working directory; check that directory for the new file. The report includes the command line and log output, and -report implies debug verbosity.

  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

Choose a report filename and log level

To use a known filename and the documented info-level example, set FFREPORT for that invocation:

FFREPORT=file=ffreport.log:level=32 ffmpeg [your existing arguments]

Replace the explanatory placeholder with your real arguments. Environment-variable parsing errors are not fatal and may not appear in the report, so verify that ffreport.log exists and is non-empty. The FFmpeg documentation describes these options in its generic options.

Retrieve logs from an existing systemd service

If FFmpeg is managed by systemd and its standard output or error is captured by the journal, filter by the actual unit name:

sudo journalctl -u your-ffmpeg-service.service --since '30 minutes ago' --no-pager

Replace your-ffmpeg-service.service with the service’s real unit. To save a bounded time window to a file on the VPS, redirect the output:

  • Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
sudo journalctl -u your-ffmpeg-service.service --since '2026-10-03 20:00:00 UTC' --until '2026-10-03 20:30:00 UTC' --no-pager > ffmpeg-journal.log

The date and times above are examples; use the window that covers the incident. The redirected file is created in the shell’s current directory. Journal permissions vary: use an account permitted to read the relevant entries or ask an authorized administrator. journalctl -u filters by unit; it does not make output available if the service was not journal-connected. See the systemd journalctl manual.

Find logs for a non-systemd process

If the process is not a journal-connected systemd service, inspect the way it was launched. A supervisor may retain logs in its own interface or configured files; a shell command may have redirected stderr; a process started in a terminal may have output only in that session. Check the supervisor configuration, launch script, or command redirection for the destination. If no output was saved, collect it on a controlled restart with -report or FFREPORT rather than assuming it can be reconstructed.

Copy the log from the VPS to your computer with scp

Run scp in a terminal on your local computer—not in the VPS shell. Use the real SSH username, host, and remote file path:

scp [email protected]:/path/to/ffmpeg-journal.log .

Here, . saves the file in your local terminal’s current directory. Substitute the report or journal file’s actual remote path. For a report in the remote account’s home directory, use its actual absolute path or ~/report-name.log.

If SSH uses a nonstandard port, specify it with uppercase -P:

scp -P 2222 user@host:/path/to/log .

Lowercase -p has a different purpose: it preserves times and mode bits. OpenSSH 9.0 and later use SFTP over SSH by default for scp transfers; the OpenSSH scp manual documents the command. If the copy fails, check the SSH username, hostname, port, authentication key, remote path, and whether your local computer has an OpenSSH client.

Match the FFmpeg log to YouTube’s stream diagnostics

After copying the log, compare its timestamps with the errors shown for the stream in YouTube Live Control Room or the dashboard. YouTube’s guidance recommends checking encoder-side picture and sound, encoder errors, CPU load, an archive where available, and outbound internet connectivity. Its timestamped stream-health errors can help distinguish an encoding or process symptom from a connection or ingest-setting problem.

For the matching time window, look for evidence related to ingest format or codecs, bitrate, audio and video stream configuration, keyframe frequency, and resolution. YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance and live stream error guidance explain the platform-side checks. Compare the time and symptom rather than treating a single log line as proof of the cause.

Troubleshoot collection and transfer problems

  • No report appeared: Check the working directory used by FFmpeg and whether that account can write there. Confirm the run used -report or a valid FFREPORT setting, then verify the file exists and is non-empty.
  • The journal command returns no relevant entries: Confirm the exact systemd unit and incident time window, then establish that the process output is connected to the journal. If it is not, locate its supervisor, terminal, or redirected output instead.
  • Journal access is denied: Use an account permitted to read those entries or ask an authorized administrator; permissions depend on the system.
  • The terminal output seems incomplete: Use --no-pager and redirect the selected journal window to a file instead of relying on terminal display.
  • scp cannot connect or authenticate: Verify the local SSH client, host, username, port, and key. Use uppercase -P for a nonstandard port.
  • scp cannot find the file: Confirm the remote path and that the file exists on the VPS. A relative filename is interpreted from the remote session’s working directory, which may differ from the directory where FFmpeg ran.
  • The copied log does not cover the incident: Adjust the journal time range or locate the report from the correct FFmpeg invocation. A newly enabled report cannot recover output that was not retained earlier.

Prepare a useful, safe troubleshooting report

Before sharing a log, inspect it and the command line for stream keys, tokens, private URLs, IP addresses, or other sensitive data. Redact credentials while retaining the error text and timing. Include the FFmpeg version/build banner, the command with secrets removed, what you expected, what happened, and whether the issue can be reproduced. FFmpeg’s bug-reporting guidance explains the information useful for diagnosing FFmpeg problems.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal behind the log troubleshooting is keeping a prerecorded YouTube stream running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
