For separate videos in a YouTube playlist, standardize the container and codecs—not the playlist itself. A practical target is MP4 with H.264 video and AAC-LC audio, while keeping each source’s frame rate, aspect ratio, and resolution unless your project requires a deliberate change. Use FFmpeg streamcopy only when the existing streams are compatible with MP4; otherwise, re-encode them.
Choose a consistent target without changing more than necessary
A YouTube playlist is a collection of separately uploaded videos. Converting its files to a common format does not join them; each output remains a separate video. For a straightforward upload target, use MP4, H.264 video, progressive scan, 4:2:0 chroma, and 48 kHz audio. YouTube’s current upload guidance also accepts audio codecs including Opus and Eclipsa Audio; AAC-LC is a common choice, not the only accepted option. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings
Keep each file’s recorded frame rate and aspect ratio by default. YouTube recommends encoding at the frame rate at which the footage was recorded, and its player adapts to different aspect ratios. Inspect your files before batch conversion
Do not assume all files have the same streams or properties. Check representative inputs for video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, rotation, pixel format, color metadata, audio layout, and extra subtitle or data streams. FFmpeg’s stream selection and option ordering matter: options generally apply to the input or output that follows them. FFmpeg documentation

Use ffprobe to inspect a file’s streams and metadata:
ffprobe -hide_banner -show_streams -show_format input.mkvReview the output for the properties that affect your target. If files have multiple video or audio streams, decide which ones you want rather than relying on automatic stream selection.
Convert one file, then validate the result
Re-encode to normalize codecs
When the source codec is unsuitable for your target, or you need to filter or change properties, re-encode. This example produces MP4 with H.264 video, AAC audio, progressive output, and 48 kHz audio while leaving the source frame rate and aspect ratio alone:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -ar 48000 -movflags +faststart output.mp4-map 0:v:0 selects the first video stream. -map 0:a:0? selects the first audio stream if one exists; the question mark makes that mapping optional. If you need a different audio or video stream, adjust the mappings after inspecting the input. This command does not copy subtitles, attachments, or data streams.
Re-encoding takes time and can affect quality; the resulting quality and file size depend on encoder settings and the source. There is no single preset that is lossless or best for every file. Choose quality and bitrate settings to suit the footage and your delivery needs, then inspect a sample output before processing the whole collection.
Remux compatible streams without re-encoding
If the existing streams are already suitable and accepted by MP4, you can change the container without another encoding pass:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c copy output.mp4Streamcopy avoids decoding and re-encoding, but it only works when the chosen streams are compatible with the output container. It cannot apply filters or normalize codecs. The example is a pattern, not a guarantee for every input; if it fails or the output is unsuitable, re-encode instead. FFmpeg documentation
Check playback and metadata
Play the output and inspect it before running a batch. Confirm that the intended video and audio are present, the image is oriented correctly, the audio plays, and the output has the expected container and properties. A successful FFmpeg exit alone does not establish that every stream or visual detail is right.

Once a sample works, apply the same decision to the rest of the collection. The following Bash loop re-encodes MKV files in the current directory using the example H.264/AAC settings. It does not make the files identical in resolution or frame rate:

doneChange the input glob and output naming to match your files. Keep originals until you have checked the converted outputs. If your collection mixes formats or stream layouts, inspect and handle exceptions instead of assuming one command suits every file.

YouTube’s upload guidance gives resolution- and frame-rate-specific reference bitrates, not universal requirements or caps. For SDR video, it lists these examples:

These are YouTube’s current guidance figures, retrieved in 2026. Match the recommendation to the output resolution and frame rate; do not force a source to a higher frame rate simply to use a higher bitrate. YouTube recommended upload encoding settings

If you meant one joined video instead of playlist files
Joining clips produces one video, which is a different task from making several separate uploads consistent. Use FFmpeg’s concat filter when clips need re-encoding or do not meet the concat demuxer’s compatibility conditions. The concat demuxer can avoid re-encoding when its format conditions are met. Troubleshoot common conversion problems
- Streamcopy fails or the MP4 will not play: the selected streams may not be compatible with MP4. Re-encode to H.264 and AAC, or use a container suited to the existing codecs.
- The wrong audio or video appears: the input may contain multiple streams and automatic selection may choose a different one. Inspect with
ffprobeand set explicit-mapoptions. - Subtitles or other tracks are missing: the example commands select only the first video and optional first audio stream. Map any needed subtitle stream deliberately, and verify that its format can be stored in the target container.
- The picture looks stretched or has unexpected bars: avoid forcing dimensions or aspect ratio without a delivery requirement. YouTube’s player adapts to aspect ratio; do not add baked-in padding by default. YouTube aspect-ratio guidance
- Colors or orientation differ: compare rotation and color metadata in the source and output. If a correction is required, use a deliberate filter or metadata handling approach rather than blindly applying the same transformation to every file.
- Files are unexpectedly large or take too long: re-encoding costs processing time and size depends on encoder settings. For already suitable streams, test whether streamcopy is appropriate; otherwise adjust encoding settings based on a representative sample.
