To convert an MKV file to MP4 without re-encoding, use FFmpeg’s streamcopy mode: ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0 -c copy output.mp4. This changes the container, not the video or audio codecs, so it is fast and avoids re-encoding loss—but it can fail if a stream cannot be muxed into MP4, and the resulting file may still be incompatible with your player.
Choose remuxing or transcoding
MKV and MP4 are containers: they package video, audio, subtitles, and other streams. Changing the container does not automatically change the codecs inside. FFmpeg calls copying selected streams without decoding and encoding them “streamcopy”; it is useful for changing a container, among other tasks. FFmpeg’s documentation explains the distinction.
| Method | Use it when | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
Remux with -c copy |
Your target accepts the existing codecs and you want a quick conversion without re-encoding. | Fast and avoids re-encoding loss, but unsupported streams can prevent MP4 output and the codecs remain unchanged. |
| Transcode selected streams | A codec or subtitle stream is incompatible with MP4 or the intended player. | Selected streams must be decoded and encoded, which takes longer. Compatible streams can still be copied. |
Convert MKV to MP4 with FFmpeg
1. Check the input streams
Before converting, identify the video, audio, subtitle, and other streams in the MKV. This matters if you need particular languages, subtitles, chapters, or attachments: FFmpeg’s automatic stream selection does not necessarily include every stream you expect. The manual describes stream mapping and automatic selection rules in its FFmpeg documentation.
2. Remux all requested streams
Open a terminal in the folder containing the file, or provide full file paths, and run:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0 -c copy output.mp4
-i input.mkvselects the input file.-map 0requests all streams from input 0 rather than relying on automatic selection.-c copycopies streams without decoding or re-encoding them.output.mp4names the MP4 container file.
Replace input.mkv and output.mp4 with your actual filenames. If the command reports that a stream cannot be muxed into MP4, the all-stream remux cannot work as written; identify the incompatible stream and decide whether to omit or convert it.
3. Map only the streams you want
Explicit mapping gives you control over what goes into the output. For example, -map 0:v selects video streams and -map 0:a selects audio streams; add the subtitle or other stream selections you need. FFmpeg documents the mapping syntax and notes that using -map disables default mappings, so include every stream you intend to keep. Its manual also illustrates selecting a particular stream with -map 0:1.

4. Verify the output
Confirm that FFmpeg completed without an error, inspect the output’s streams, and play it on the device or app you care about. A file can be a valid MP4 yet fail to play on a particular device because that device does not support a codec inside the container. An FFmpeg-user mailing-list discussion from January 2025 describes a TV rejecting an output and considers codec support as a possible cause; it is an illustrative case, not a rule for every TV.
When streamcopy fails or the player rejects the file
Convert only the incompatible stream
If the video is incompatible but the audio can remain as-is, FFmpeg can encode the video while copying the audio. The manual’s example uses libx264 for video and copies audio:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0:v -map 0:a -c:v libx264 -c:a copy output.mp4
This is an example, not a universal preset. Choose an encoder and output settings based on the target player’s documented codec support and the source material. Re-encoding takes longer and is not the same as remuxing; avoid it if the existing streams already work for your intended use.

Handle subtitles as a separate compatibility question
Subtitle compatibility depends on the subtitle format and the target. In a January 2025 FFmpeg-user discussion, a SubRip stream caused an MP4 muxing error, and a reply proposed -c:s mov_text as a case-specific option. For example, when appropriate for your files and player, try:
ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0 -c copy -c:s mov_text output.mp4

That option should not be treated as a universal subtitle fix: image subtitles and other formats may need different handling or may not transfer as desired. Check the output’s subtitle tracks and test playback.

| Problem | Likely reason | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| The command finishes with an MP4 muxing error. | At least one requested stream may not be supported by the MP4 muxer. | Identify the problematic stream, map only the streams you need, or convert the incompatible stream to a suitable format. |
| The MP4 was created, but a TV or app will not play it. | The player may not support the video or audio codec inside the MP4. | Check the player’s documented codec support; if necessary, transcode the unsupported stream rather than only changing containers. |
| A subtitle track is missing or causes an error. | The subtitle format may not be supported in the MP4 output or by the player. | Inspect the subtitle format and test a suitable conversion. mov_text is one case-specific option for SubRip, not a general solution for every subtitle type. |
| An audio language or other expected track is absent. | Automatic stream selection may not have included it, or the output mapping omitted it. | Inspect the input, explicitly map the streams you want, then inspect the output. |
| The file extension changed, but playback did not improve. | Renaming .mkv to .mp4 does not change the container or codecs. |
Use FFmpeg to remux compatible streams or transcode the streams the target cannot play. |
Preserve the tracks and quality you actually need
If you need multiple audio languages, subtitles, chapters, or attachments, inspect the source and explicitly map the content you want before conversion. Then inspect and play the output. Do not assume that a successful command preserved every track or that HDR or Dolby Vision metadata will survive: compatibility depends on the actual stream formats, FFmpeg build, resulting file, and target device.
If your goal is only to change containers and the streams are compatible, streamcopy avoids decoding and re-encoding. If your player rejects an embedded codec, changing containers alone will not solve that incompatibility. For further command and mapping details, consult the FFmpeg manual.
Or let it run in the cloud
Converting a file to MP4 is separate from keeping a YouTube channel live. If your next step is to play uploaded videos as a continuous YouTube stream, StreamNeo runs that stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
