1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou can avoid an extra quality loss when converting an AVI for a 24/7 YouTube stream if you can copy its existing video and audio streams into a compatible output without re-encoding. AVI is only a container, so inspect its codecs first. If the codecs or required processing make stream copy unsuitable, encode the file once to a YouTube-compatible format. YouTube transcodes live input for viewers, so no workflow can guarantee bit-for-bit preservation from your file to every viewer.
Why AVI does not tell you whether conversion will be lossless
AVI is a container, not a video or audio codec. The file may hold different kinds of encoded streams, and the extension alone cannot tell you whether they will work in your output container or YouTube ingest.
FFmpeg stream copy moves encoded packets without decoding or encoding them; that avoids quality loss during that step. It works only when the target container supports the source streams. If you resize, deinterlace, add overlays, change frame rate, process audio, or convert to incompatible codecs, the media must be decoded and encoded. That can introduce quality loss. See the FFmpeg documentation.
Even a clean local stream copy does not make the entire broadcast lossless: YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into formats for viewers.

Inspect the AVI before choosing a conversion
Check codecs and stream properties
Use FFprobe, included with FFmpeg, to inspect the file:
ffprobe input.avi
Note the video and audio codecs, frame size, frame rate, pixel format, and whether the picture is interlaced. These details determine whether you can copy the streams, whether a conversion is needed, and which settings to use for an encode.
Decide whether to copy or encode
- Try stream copy if the existing streams are supported by the destination container and your intended ingest workflow, and you do not need to alter the picture or sound.
- Encode once if stream copy fails, a codec is unsuitable for your chosen ingest, or you need to resize, deinterlace, change frame rate, add graphics, or process audio.
Remux compatible streams without re-encoding
A remux changes the container while copying the selected audio and video streams. For example:
ffmpeg -i input.avi -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c copy output.mp4
This selects the first video and first audio stream, then copies them into an MP4 container. It is an example, not a guarantee: the actual codecs must be supported by the MP4 muxer. A file can contain multiple audio tracks or other streams; adjust the maps if you need a different track. If the command fails, check codec and muxer compatibility rather than assuming the AVI is corrupt.

Play the output and inspect its audio and video before using it for a long broadcast. If you do need an encode, keep the source frame size and frame rate where possible. Upscaling or changing cadence without a specific reason does not restore detail and may create avoidable processing.
Encode once if stream copy is not suitable
For a common H.264/AAC RTMP(S) ingest, YouTube’s current guidance calls for constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), progressive square-pixel output, and a bitrate suited to resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 8 Mbps for 720p30. These are ingest recommendations, not promises about the quality viewers receive.
As of October 3, 2026, YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Check its live encoder settings before a broadcast because recommendations can change. Do not treat the example bitrates above as universal settings for every resolution or frame rate.
When you encode, select a suitable bitrate and match the source’s dimensions and frame rate where practical. Deinterlacing is needed only if the source is interlaced and you want progressive output. Every required filter or codec conversion means encoding; avoid making successive lossy copies. Keep a preserved original so you can make a better encode later without starting from an already degraded file.

Loop a prepared file to YouTube with FFmpeg
If your prepared file’s codecs work with the FLV muxer and the chosen YouTube ingest, this illustrative command reads the file at its native rate and loops it indefinitely:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY
Replace the endpoint and key placeholders with the ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Do not publish or share the key. This command copies video and audio; it is not appropriate if the streams are incompatible with FLV or the ingest configuration, or if the file needs processing. In that case, specify an encoder and configure it to meet YouTube’s current requirements.
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as infinite looping and -re as reading a file at its native frame rate. Looping the input is not the same as providing uptime: by itself, this command does not recover a dropped connection or restart a failed process.
Test the stream and check YouTube’s health indicators
- Set up the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Copy the ingest endpoint and stream key from your account; use RTMPS when available.
- Start a short test before relying on the stream. Check representative scenes with motion and listen for audio problems. YouTube recommends testing before a stream.
- Watch stream health. YouTube’s diagnostics can flag issues including low bitrate, missing audio, unsupported codecs, and keyframe problems. Correct the underlying output or encoder setting and test again.
- Verify the actual live output. Confirm that picture and sound are present and that the intended file is looping before leaving a long broadcast unattended.
Troubleshooting common conversion and streaming problems
The stream-copy command fails
The source codec may not be supported by the target container or muxer. Check the codecs reported by FFprobe and choose a compatible container, or encode once to a supported configuration. An AVI extension does not establish codec compatibility.

YouTube reports an unsupported codec or keyframe issue
Check the video and audio codecs, the keyframe interval, and the selected ingest configuration against YouTube’s current encoder settings. For the common H.264/AAC configuration, YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
YouTube reports low bitrate or the picture breaks up
Compare the configured video bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the selected resolution and frame rate. Also check that the computer and upload connection can sustain the ingest bitrate. A bitrate recommendation is for input to YouTube; it does not guarantee a particular viewer-side rendition.
There is no audio
Confirm that the input has an audio stream and that your FFmpeg map selects the intended track. YouTube accepts AAC or MP3 audio for the listed live ingest guidance. Check stream health and listen to a test broadcast before running a long stream.
The stream stops when the command or computer stops
The loop option repeats the file only while FFmpeg keeps running and the connection remains usable. It is not an automatic restart or failover mechanism. Plan how the process and equipment will stay available, or use a cloud service designed to keep the stream running.

Copyright and monetization checks for a 24/7 loop
Before looping a documentary or other recording, make sure you have the rights needed to stream its video, music, narration, and other included material on YouTube. A successful technical ingest does not establish permission to use the content. YouTube may also apply its own copyright and monetization policies; no encoder setting can guarantee eligibility. Review the copyright safety checklist and YouTube’s current rules before broadcasting.
