How to Connect Wowza to YouTube Live with RTMP

Connect a Wowza source to a YouTube Live event with its RTMP URL and Stream key. The setup differs across Streaming Engine, Wowza Video, and the older Streaming Cloud interface.

You can send a Wowza source to a YouTube Live event by configuring an RTMP target with the event’s Stream URL and Stream key. The exact fields depend on which Wowza product you use: Streaming Engine, Wowza Video, and the older Wowza Streaming Cloud interface are not interchangeable. Confirm your product and follow its matching setup below.

Before you configure the RTMP target

  • Have a live source running in Wowza, or be ready to start it. YouTube will not receive a picture until the source reaches Wowza and the target is enabled.
  • Create or select the YouTube live event and retrieve its event-specific Stream URL and Stream key from YouTube Studio’s stream settings.
  • Treat the Stream key like a password. Do not share it in public text, screenshots, or recordings. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the Wowza target.
  • Check the encoder settings shown for the event in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s activation rules and encoder requirements can change; use the current event-specific guidance rather than assuming older settings still apply.

Choose the instructions for your Wowza product

Wowza has documented YouTube delivery for multiple products, but their configuration screens and field mappings differ. The older Wowza Streaming Cloud guide describes custom RTMP delivery; current Wowza instructions also cover Streaming Engine and Wowza Video. If your account still presents a Streaming Cloud interface, use the labels and help text in that interface rather than copying fields from another product.

Product Documented target type Key point
Wowza Streaming Engine YouTube Live stream target Map the YouTube destination host and application separately; the default RTMP port is 1935. Wowza instructions
Wowza Video External service/custom target using RTMP Enter YouTube’s primary URL and Stream key; the legacy guide leaves username and password blank. Wowza instructions
Wowza Streaming Cloud Custom RTMP target in the archival guide The archival guide supports the general workflow, but does not establish that the same interface remains available today. Archival guide

1. Create or select the YouTube Live event

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the live-streaming workflow and create a live event or select the event you intend to use.
  2. Open the event’s stream settings and copy its Stream URL and Stream key. Use the event-specific values provided there; do not substitute a URL or key from another event.
  3. Keep the event open in Live Control Room so you can check whether YouTube receives the Wowza output before you start the public broadcast.

2. Configure Wowza Streaming Engine

  1. In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, create a YouTube Live stream target and provide the incoming source stream name and YouTube destination details. The exact navigation can differ by Engine version, so use the target configuration page in your installed interface.
  2. For the documented URL mapping, put the host portion of YouTube’s destination URL in the destination host field and the path after the host in the destination application field. Leave destination application instance blank. Wowza documents RTMP port 1935 as the default.
  3. Enable stream targets globally if they are disabled, then enable the individual YouTube target.
  4. Make sure the source stream is running in Wowza. Check YouTube Live Control Room for an incoming preview before selecting Go Live.

Do not paste the entire destination URL into one field if the Engine screen separates host and application, and do not apply this field mapping to Wowza Video’s custom-target form.

3. Configure Wowza Video

  1. Choose the output rendition you want to send, then add an external service or custom target.
  2. Select RTMP and enter YouTube’s primary URL and Stream key in the corresponding fields. The legacy Wowza Video instructions say to omit the rtmp:// prefix and trailing slash from URL fields; follow the current field help if your interface specifies a different format.
  3. Leave target username and password blank in the documented Wowza Video workflow. A backup URL is optional in the legacy guide.
  4. Enable or start the output, then check YouTube Live Control Room for an incoming preview. Start the YouTube event only after confirming the intended picture and sound.

4. If you are using the older Wowza Streaming Cloud interface

The archival Wowza Streaming Cloud guide supports delivering to a custom RTMP target such as YouTube. It is not evidence that every current Wowza account has the same Cloud product or screen. If the Cloud target form is available in your account, use its custom-RTMP option and the YouTube Stream URL and Stream key for your event, following the field-specific instructions shown there. Do not copy Streaming Engine’s split host/application mapping or assume Wowza Video’s URL formatting applies.

Resolution, frame rate, and keyframes

Send a single selected Wowza output to YouTube; YouTube then creates lower-bitrate playback variants for adaptive viewing. Wowza Video’s 2025 guidance lists support up to 2160p (3840 × 2160) at 60 fps and recommends an I-frame at least every two seconds and no more than four seconds apart. Wowza also warns that YouTube may change its encoder requirements, so treat those figures as Wowza-published guidance, not a guarantee of current acceptance. Verify the requirements displayed for your event in YouTube.

In Wowza’s legacy guide, YouTube accepts one stream/output rendition that it transcodes. Passthrough transcoding availability can depend on the Wowza subscription; do not assume every plan includes it. Choose output and transcoder settings supported by your specific Wowza account and the current YouTube event requirements.

Copyright and YouTube Live rules

RTMP configuration only transports the signal; it does not grant rights to the material or guarantee that YouTube will allow the stream. Before broadcasting, confirm that you have the necessary rights for all video, music, and other content, and review YouTube’s current live-stream policies and any event-specific notices in Studio. A successful incoming preview is a technical check, not a copyright or policy clearance.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube shows no incoming preview The Wowza source is not running, the target is disabled, or the destination details are wrong. Confirm the source reaches Wowza, enable the target, and verify the event-specific YouTube URL and key.
The RTMP target fails to connect Fields may be mapped for a different Wowza product, or the URL format may not match the form. Use the instructions for your actual product. In Engine, check host/application mapping and the default port; in Wowza Video, check the custom-target URL format and blank credentials.
YouTube receives a signal but rejects or limits it The output may not meet the event’s current encoder settings, or the selected rendition may be unsuitable. Compare resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current event-specific settings and adjust the Wowza output.
Preview appears, but the event is not public The event has not been started in YouTube Live Control Room. After checking the preview, start the event in YouTube when you are ready to broadcast.
YouTube’s key has been exposed or the wrong event is receiving the signal A key was shared or a key from another event was configured. Replace or select the correct key in YouTube, update the Wowza target, and verify the preview again.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel 24/7 rather than relay a live source through Wowza, StreamNeo is a different workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps it running without a computer or home connection staying on. It streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. For Indian users, UPI is available. This plays uploaded videos and does not send a camera feed. Start the free first day.
