To connect a YouTube channel in Switchboard Live, first enable live streaming on that YouTube channel. Then, in Switchboard on a desktop, open the relevant Stream Group, choose Add Destinations > Connect More > YouTube, authorize the Google account that can access the channel, and enable that destination in the Stream Group. When you are ready to broadcast, send your encoder feed to Switchboard, confirm its preview and receiving status, select the YouTube destination, and choose Go Live.
Before connecting: enable YouTube live streaming
YouTube live streaming must be enabled on the channel before Switchboard can authorize it as a destination. Switchboard’s guide, Connecting YouTube to Switchboard Connect, states: “Before you can authenticate your YouTube destinations, you must enable live streaming on your channel.”
If live streaming is not enabled, Switchboard’s activation guide says to verify the channel by phone and wait for YouTube to activate the feature. Switchboard describes the wait as up to 24 hours in its connection guidance; its activation article, updated April 24, 2025, says “After 24 hours, your YouTube channel will have live streaming enabled!” Treat that as Switchboard’s operational guidance, not a guaranteed YouTube service-level commitment.
Connect the YouTube account in Switchboard
- Sign in on a desktop. Open Switchboard and select the Stream Group that will carry the broadcast. If you are creating a new group, continue through its setup until you reach Connect More.
- Open the YouTube authorization flow. For an existing group, choose Add Destinations, then Connect More, and select YouTube.
- Choose the account with channel access. Select the Google/YouTube account that owns or has access to the intended channel, then click Continue and complete the authorization. Close the success screen when it appears. Check the selected channel carefully; authorizing a different channel does not connect the one you meant to use.
- Enable the destination in the right group. In the desired Stream Group, open Add Destinations, find the YouTube channel, turn on its toggle, and submit the change. The authorized destination can be reused in Stream Groups, but it must be enabled in each group that should carry it.
If one Google login can access multiple YouTube channels, Switchboard says you can repeat the authorization steps to add additional channels.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Send the broadcast and go live
Connecting a channel authorizes a destination; it does not itself send video. Your encoder feed must first reach Switchboard. The workflow described in Switchboard Live Initial Setup separates sending the encoder feed from starting the output to YouTube.
- Start your streaming application or encoder and send its feed into the Switchboard workflow for the Stream Group.
- Check the confidence monitor: confirm that the expected video appears and that the receiving indicator is green.
- Select the YouTube destination for the broadcast, then choose Go Live.
Switchboard describes support for streaming applications as well as encoders; its setup does not require a particular hardware model. Its FAQ names OBS, Ecamm Live, Switcher Studio, and StreamYard as example applications.

When to use Custom RTMP for a scheduled event
For a scheduled YouTube event, Switchboard documents an event-specific Custom RTMP route rather than the reusable account-authorization flow. Use this when you need to send to that event using its own stream details. Follow Switchboard’s scheduled-event guide:
- In YouTube Studio, open the scheduled event’s stream settings and copy that event’s Stream URL and Stream Key.
- In the relevant Switchboard Stream Group, choose Add Destinations > Connect More > Custom RTMP.
- Enter the Stream URL and Stream Key in their corresponding fields, then give the destination a recognizable name.
- Start the encoder feed to Switchboard, select the Custom RTMP destination, and go live when ready.
Treat a stream key as a credential: do not publish it in screenshots, documentation, or public messages.

Troubleshooting connection and preview problems
- YouTube is missing or unavailable during authorization: Confirm that live streaming is enabled on the intended channel and allow for the activation period described by Switchboard. Then check that you selected the Google account with access to the right channel.
- The wrong channel appears: Repeat the account-selection step and carefully choose the account/channel you intend to broadcast to. If multiple channels are accessible through the same login, add the intended channel by repeating authorization.
- The channel is authorized but not available in this broadcast: Open Add Destinations in the correct Stream Group, find the channel, turn on its toggle, and submit the change.
- YouTube has no incoming picture after the encoder starts: Check the two parts of the route separately. First verify that video is visible in Switchboard’s confidence monitor and the receiving indicator is green. Only then select the YouTube destination and press Go Live.
- A scheduled event does not receive the feed: For the Custom RTMP route, check that the event’s Stream URL and Stream Key were copied into their matching fields and that the intended named destination is selected.
These checks address the documented setup points; Switchboard’s setup material does not establish one universal cause for every authorization failure.
