Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To stream from an Ubuntu VPS to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, use the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown for your specific stream in YouTube Live Control Room, select output settings supported by both your FFmpeg build and YouTube’s current encoder guidance, then test from the actual VPS while watching YouTube’s stream health. An Indian server location alone does not guarantee enough sustained upload capacity or a reliable route to YouTube.
Before you start
This is a configuration guide, not a provider performance guarantee or a tested one-size-fits-all command. Ubuntu release, installed FFmpeg build, input media, VPS network and YouTube event settings all affect what will work. Check capabilities on the server you intend to use.
- An Ubuntu VPS with access to a shell and permission to run FFmpeg.
- A YouTube channel and a stream or scheduled event prepared in Live Control Room.
- A local video file or other media input that you have the right to stream.
- A target resolution and frame rate you can encode and upload reliably.
Get the current YouTube RTMPS URL and stream key
Use the server URL and stream key displayed in the settings for the intended stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Do not copy an endpoint from an old tutorial: the URL shown for your event is the one to use. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which it describes as a secure extension of RTMP. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance and its encoder settings guidance.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and select or create the stream you plan to use.
- Open that stream’s settings and copy its displayed RTMPS server URL and stream key.
- Keep the key private. Do not put it in a public command transcript, screenshot, repository or support post. If it is exposed, replace or rotate it in YouTube’s stream settings.
The stream key is a credential. Avoid placing it in shell history or any file accessible to other users. If you store it in an environment file, restrict that file’s permissions and keep it out of source control.

Check Ubuntu and the installed FFmpeg build
Ubuntu package availability and FFmpeg features vary by release and build. Ubuntu’s Noble FFmpeg protocol manual documents RTMP publishing conventions; it does not certify that every installed FFmpeg binary includes the protocol or encoder you need. Consult the Ubuntu Noble FFmpeg protocol manual, then verify the binary actually installed on your VPS.
- Identify the release with
lsb_release -aor inspect/etc/os-release. - Check the FFmpeg version with
ffmpeg -version. - Inspect available encoders with
ffmpeg -encoders; confirm the video encoder and audio encoder you plan to use appear in the output. - Inspect protocol support with
ffmpeg -protocols. Check that the relevant RTMP/RTMPS protocol is available in this build.
These are inspection commands, not a promise that a particular package-install command or encoder is available on every Ubuntu release. If the required encoder or protocol is absent, choose a compatible FFmpeg build for your release before attempting a live stream.

Choose output settings for YouTube and your VPS
Follow YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for the resolution, frame rate and codec you choose. Its guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS; constant bitrate (CBR) encoding; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds.
| Setting | Practical configuration rule |
|---|---|
| Protocol | Use the current RTMPS URL supplied for the stream in Live Control Room. |
| Video codec | Use H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 only if your installed FFmpeg build supports the chosen encoder and it is appropriate for your stream. |
| Audio codec | Use AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS, and confirm the encoder exists in your FFmpeg build. |
| Rate control | Use CBR as YouTube recommends. |
| Keyframes | Set a two-second interval as the recommendation; do not exceed four seconds. |
| Video format | YouTube’s advanced guidance specifies square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames and one reference frame. |
| Stereo audio | YouTube’s guidance specifies 44.1 kHz sampling and 128 kbps for stereo AAC/MP3. |
| 5.1 audio | YouTube’s guidance specifies AAC at 48 kHz and 384 kbps. |
Use the bitrate row for the exact output resolution, frame rate and codec in YouTube’s current table. For one specific example, the surfaced table lists 720p at 30 fps as 2–6 Mbps for the H.264 column and 3–8 Mbps for the AV1 column; check the live table headings and applicable codec before relying on those figures. They describe YouTube encoder guidance, not measured capacity on an Indian VPS.

Choose a bitrate your instance can sustain with headroom, rather than treating the maximum in a YouTube table as a target. Test the VPS’s actual outbound route and monitor Live Control Room’s preview, health status and messages. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event.
Build and test the FFmpeg publish command
The exact command depends on the input file, installed encoders, output settings and event URL. The following is a pattern, not a validated command for every Ubuntu or FFmpeg build. Replace the placeholders with values you have checked; confirm the options against your installed FFmpeg before using them.

-f flv "RTMPS_SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY"
This example assumes the input is a file and that the build provides libx264, AAC encoding and the required RTMPS output support. It does not select a resolution or frame rate: set those deliberately for the chosen YouTube bitrate row and your source, using options supported by the installed build. For a two-second keyframe interval, calculate the frame count from the output frame rate (for example, 60 frames at 30 fps); keep the interval at or below YouTube’s four-second limit. Validate the complete command and option behavior locally rather than assuming all builds behave identically.
The output URL must be assembled from the current RTMPS server URL and stream key exactly as YouTube displays them. Treat any command containing the key as sensitive: shell history and process listings may expose command arguments to users with access to the server.

- Start with representative media, including typical motion and audio, and run a preflight stream before the event.
- Open the stream preview in Live Control Room and wait for YouTube to report whether it is receiving the signal.
- Check stream health and messages while the test runs. If health degrades, lower bitrate or output complexity and test again from the same VPS.
- Once the settings work, use the same event configuration for the intended broadcast and confirm the preview before starting the public event.
Keep the stream running unattended
A terminal session ending, an FFmpeg process stopping, an expired event configuration or a network interruption can end a broadcast. For unattended use, arrange process supervision and restart behavior appropriate to your Ubuntu release and operational needs. A service manager such as systemd can be part of that design, but no universal unit file or reconnect behavior is established here; validate your own service, logging, restart limits and key handling before relying on it.
Also confirm the YouTube event remains available for the period you intend to stream. A process restart cannot correct a revoked key, an incorrect endpoint, unsupported FFmpeg options or an outbound network restriction.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder | The installed build does not include the selected encoder. | Review ffmpeg -encoders; choose an encoder actually listed or install a suitable build for the Ubuntu release. |
| Connection fails or the server rejects publishing | Stale or mistyped server URL, incorrect stream key, unavailable RTMPS protocol support, or an event that is not ready. | Copy the URL and key again from the intended event’s current settings; verify protocol support and event status in Live Control Room. |
| FFmpeg cannot open the output URL | The local build may lack the necessary protocol support, or the URL may not match the current YouTube settings. | Inspect ffmpeg -protocols and compare the assembled URL with the displayed RTMPS server URL and key. |
| YouTube receives the stream but reports poor health | The selected bitrate may exceed sustained VPS upload capacity, or encoding/network conditions may be unstable. | Check Live Control Room health and messages; test a lower bitrate or less demanding output setting from the same instance. |
| Audio is missing or incompatible | The selected audio encoder or sampling configuration may not match the build or YouTube guidance. | Confirm the audio encoder is available; check AAC/MP3 choice and the applicable stereo or 5.1 settings. |
| The stream stops after a disconnect | FFmpeg exited or did not recover, or the event/key/network state changed. | Inspect process logs, network reachability and event settings; validate a supervised restart strategy rather than assuming reconnection. |
| The key appears in logs or a shared command | The stream key was included in a visible URL or transcript. | Remove the exposure where possible and rotate the key in YouTube settings before continuing. |
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Only stream media you own or are licensed to use, including music, footage and any third-party material. A successful FFmpeg connection does not establish that content is cleared for broadcast or eligible for monetization. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream rules for your content and account before scheduling a stream; do not assume that a static or looping video is exempt from those requirements.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on YouTube without maintaining your own VPS process, StreamNeo is a cloud service for always-on YouTube streams. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo streams uploaded media (not a live camera feed), supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
