This can restore OBS’s connection when your internet returns, but it cannot guarantee YouTube will keep the same live event open or restore the same viewer session. Check YouTube Live Control Room after reconnection; if the event has ended, you may need to start or set up the stream again.
Configure OBS to retry the connection
- Open OBS Settings → Advanced. Enable Automatically Reconnect. OBS community guidance describes this control in Advanced settings; exact labels, defaults, and behavior can vary by OBS version.
- Set the retry allowance for your situation. Increase the retry allowance if the installed version exposes it and outages may last longer. There is no universal retry count or duration established here, so check the controls in your version rather than relying on a presumed default.
- Confirm the YouTube destination. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, verify that OBS is configured with the intended stream URL and stream key. YouTube uses the key to accept the encoder feed; treat it like a password and do not share it. YouTube’s stream settings guide and encoder setup guide explain the setup.
- Review auto-start and auto-stop. Check whether these options are enabled for the event. YouTube says they allow the encoder to start or stop streaming, but they do not guarantee that a live event will remain open after a prolonged disconnect.
Automatic reconnect is an encoder-side retry, not a guarantee that YouTube’s event or watch page will resume unchanged. OBS forum guidance supports enabling the retry setting, while YouTube’s setup guidance does not establish a universal timeout or promise same-event recovery.
Check what viewers see after the network returns
- Wait for OBS to report that it has reconnected and is sending the stream.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and check the event status and incoming stream preview.
- Check the watch page or player separately. An OBS connection alone does not prove the original event is still live for viewers.
- If YouTube reports that the event ended, restart the encoder or create/start the appropriate event in Live Control Room. Do not assume the old viewer session has resumed.
For a 24/7 broadcast, run this test before leaving it unattended: disconnect the network, restore it, and verify both OBS’s status and the viewer-facing YouTube player. YouTube recommends testing stream setups and backup-encoder failover; its guidance does not specify a universal outage timeout.
Reduce avoidable disconnects before relying on reconnect
Match bitrate to upload capacity
OBS identifies dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the selected bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect the stream. YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom. That is a planning recommendation, not a guarantee against an ISP failure. If the connection is congested, reducing bitrate may help it stay within available capacity. OBS cautions that dynamic bitrate can reduce video quality and does not fix the underlying network problem.
Use a stable network path
OBS recommends checking network conditions, possible software interference, and current network drivers. A wired Ethernet connection can avoid Wi-Fi instability, but it cannot restore an ISP connection that is down. For an unattended stream, consider the power and network path as well as the encoder; a backup device on the same failed router or ISP may not protect against that outage.

When a backup encoder helps—and when it does not
YouTube recommends testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then verifying that the player rolls over to the backup. A backup encoder addresses some failures of the primary encoder only when it has a working feed path. If both encoders depend on the same failed internet connection, the test does not establish protection from an ISP outage. Plan and test an independent viable network path for that failure case.

YouTube’s encoder guide also lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for continuous streaming of prerecorded video without a dedicated PC. That is a different operating model from restoring an OBS feed; check a service’s current source-content rules, controls, cost, and terms before choosing it.
