How to Configure FFmpeg to Reconnect a 24/7 Kids’ Stream After Internet Loss

Separate HTTP input reconnects from RTMP output recovery, choose retry limits, and verify the options supported by your installed FFmpeg build.

First identify which connection failed: FFmpeg may have lost its HTTP input, or it may have lost its RTMP publishing connection. HTTP reconnect options help restore the input; FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer recovery pattern addresses an RTMP output outage. They solve different problems, and neither guarantees that viewers will see an uninterrupted stream.

Diagnose whether the input or output failed

Trace the path from source to viewers: FFmpeg reads a source, processes or passes through its streams, then publishes to a destination. If the source is HTTP and that connection fails, use HTTP protocol reconnect options. If FFmpeg is still reading but its RTMP publishing connection drops, configure recovery around the output with the FIFO muxer.

  • Input failure: The source connection ends or stalls before FFmpeg can read more media. HTTP reconnect options apply only when the input uses HTTP.
  • Output failure: FFmpeg cannot publish to the RTMP destination. The documented FIFO recovery example is for this side of the pipeline.

Check FFmpeg’s log around the failure to determine which side stopped working before changing flags. These settings are not universal switches for every protocol or input type.

Reconnect an HTTP input

FFmpeg documents several HTTP protocol options for different failure conditions. Put input-scoped options before the relevant -i, so they apply to that input. The current online options and their meanings are in the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Option What it addresses
-reconnect 1 Retry after disconnection before EOF.
-reconnect_at_eof 1 Treat EOF as an error and reconnect; useful for live or endless streams.
-reconnect_streamed 1 Allow reconnect attempts for streamed, non-seekable inputs.
-reconnect_on_network_error 1 Retry TCP or TLS errors during connection.
-reconnect_on_http_error 5xx Retry responses in the specified HTTP status class. The option also supports specifying status codes.
-reconnect_delay_max Set a maximum reconnect delay.
-reconnect_max_retries Limit the number of reconnect attempts.
-reconnect_delay_total_max Limit total reconnect delay.

For example, a command reading an HTTP source might begin like this:

ffmpeg -reconnect 1 -reconnect_streamed 1 -reconnect_at_eof 1
  -i "https://example.com/live-or-endless-source"
[your existing processing and output options]

The URL and bracketed portion are placeholders, not literal command text. Add network-error or HTTP-status retries only if those failures are plausible for your source and your operating policy calls for retrying them. Set retry limits deliberately: an always-on process may need to keep trying, while an unlimited retry loop can also conceal a source that has failed permanently.

Recover an RTMP output after a network outage

For publishing to RTMP, FFmpeg’s all-components documentation shows recovery by wrapping the output in its FIFO muxer. Its example is:

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT
  -c:v libx264 -c:a aac
  -f fifo -fifo_format flv
  -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1
  -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
  -map 0:v -map 0:a
  rtmp://example.com/live/stream_name

INPUT and the RTMP address are placeholders. This documented example re-encodes video as H.264 and audio as AAC; choose codecs and stream mapping that fit the actual source and destination rather than copying them blindly. Consult the FFmpeg all-components documentation before adapting the FIFO options, which have buffering and latency implications.

Choose recovery behavior intentionally

-attempt_recovery 1 enables recovery attempts, and -recovery_wait_time 1 makes the example wait one second before another attempt after an unsuccessful attempt. FFmpeg documents a five-second default for recovery_wait_time; the one-second value in the example is a configuration choice, not a universal recommendation.

-recover_any_error can extend recovery attempts to errors that are usually permanent. Use it only if retrying those error types is appropriate for your setup. For both input and output recovery, choose limits and waiting behavior based on which failures should be retried and how long the service should continue trying.

Check your installed FFmpeg build

The online FFmpeg documentation follows the newest revision, so an option shown there may not be available in an older installed build. FFmpeg’s documentation index advises readers using older versions to consult the documentation installed locally. Verify option support on the machine running the stream before relying on a command in production.

  1. Check the installed version with ffmpeg -version.
  2. Inspect local help for the relevant protocol or muxer options; availability can depend on the build and the input or output protocol in use.
  3. Run a controlled test by interrupting the relevant connection, then inspect the log to confirm that FFmpeg retries and resumes as expected.

The official references describe configuration options and an example, not a measured recovery rate or guarantee against viewer interruption. A brief outage may still interrupt playback while connections recover.

Troubleshoot common reconnect failures

  • FFmpeg exits when the source ends: If the source is HTTP and is meant to be live or endless, test -reconnect_at_eof 1 before its -i. An ordinary finite file reaching EOF is not necessarily a failure to reconnect.
  • HTTP retries do not help the publishing connection: Those options address HTTP input, not RTMP output. Use the FIFO recovery pattern for the RTMP output instead.
  • A streamed source does not reconnect: For an HTTP non-seekable input, check whether -reconnect_streamed 1 is supported by the installed build and placed before that input’s -i.
  • Connection errors are not retried: For HTTP inputs, consider -reconnect_on_network_error 1. If the server returns an HTTP error response, configure -reconnect_on_http_error for the status codes or class that should be retried.
  • Retries continue longer than intended: Set a maximum retry count, maximum delay, or maximum total delay where appropriate. These HTTP limits are documented separately; choose them according to the service’s recovery policy.
  • RTMP recovery still fails: Confirm that FIFO wraps the RTMP output and that recovery is enabled. Check the error type before enabling -recover_any_error, which can also retry errors that are usually permanent.
  • The command rejects an option: Check the installed version and local documentation. Online documentation is regenerated for the newest revision and may not match an older build.

Keep the children’s stream suitable as well as online

Reconnect settings address transport failures; they do not establish that the video is suitable for children or that you have the rights to stream it. Use content you are authorized to broadcast, and review the applicable YouTube rules for copyright and reused content before scheduling a continuous stream. Recovery settings also cannot guarantee uninterrupted viewing during an outage.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the stream is a prerecorded video for YouTube, StreamNeo offers a cloud alternative to maintaining your own FFmpeg host: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the loop running, so nothing at home has to stay on. It streams the uploaded video as made, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one price per slot, and automatically attempts recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera-based live broadcasts. See StreamNeo, then start the free day.
