FFmpeg’s reconnect options can retry an interrupted HTTP input, but they do not by themselves guarantee that FFmpeg will reconnect its RTMP publishing output to YouTube. Configure the input and output sides separately, set sensible retry limits, and treat a finite file loop as a different problem from reconnecting a live source.
What FFmpeg reconnect options can—and cannot—recover
The HTTP protocol options apply to an HTTP input, such as an HLS playlist. They govern retries when that source disconnects or reaches EOF. They do not make HTTP reconnect switches work for a camera, RTSP feed, local file, or other non-HTTP input.
They also do not promise to restore a dropped RTMP publishing connection to YouTube. YouTube’s ingestion addresses are destinations for sending video; an invalid address, expired stream key, or incorrect stream setup is not something input retries can fix. Check YouTube’s LiveStreams documentation for ingestion address and protocol context.
| Where the failure occurs | Relevant mechanism | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP source disconnect or EOF | FFmpeg HTTP protocol reconnect options | Recovery for non-HTTP inputs or RTMP publishing output |
| FFmpeg output write or publishing interruption | Separate output/FIFO muxer recovery controls | Guaranteed recovery of a YouTube live session or resumption at the same point |
| Destination or stream setup mismatch | Verify the YouTube ingestion configuration and address | That retries can repair a bad address, expired key, or setup error |

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffmpeg -reconnect 1 -reconnect_streamed 1 -reconnect_at_eof 1
-reconnect_delay_max 10
-i 'https://example.invalid/live.m3u8'
-c copy -f flv 'rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/REDACTED_STREAM_KEY'
Both addresses are placeholders. Never put a real stream key in a published command, screenshot, or log. This is an illustrative pattern, not a universal tested command: the source protocol, FFmpeg build, codecs, output container, and YouTube stream setup all matter. HTTP options must appear before the input they configure.
What each option means
-reconnect 1retries after disconnection before EOF. The FFmpeg Project defines it as: “Reconnect automatically when disconnected before EOF is hit.”-reconnect_streamed 1enables retries for streamed or non-seekable HTTP inputs. The FFmpeg Project says: “If set then even streamed/non seekable streams will be reconnected on errors.”-reconnect_at_eof 1treats EOF as an error and triggers reconnection. The FFmpeg Project describes it as useful for “live / endless streams.” It is not a general way to make a finite video file loop forever.-reconnect_delay_max 10sets the maximum delay in seconds before giving up reconnecting. Choose a bound suitable for the source; the example’s value is not a universal recommendation.
Choose error handling and retry bounds deliberately
The HTTP protocol reference also documents reconnect_on_network_error for TCP/TLS errors during connection, reconnect_on_http_error for selected status codes or categories such as 4xx and 5xx, reconnect_max_retries for a retry-count limit, and reconnect_delay_total_max for a total-delay limit. respect_retry_after can honor a server’s Retry-After request instead of using exponential backoff.

Use only the controls that fit the source and failure you expect. Broadly retrying every 4xx response, for example, can waste time on a permanent client or authorization error. Set finite limits appropriate to the source service, and describe your policy rather than treating one combination as universally correct. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation for option definitions and availability.
Check your FFmpeg build and command
- Confirm the input really uses HTTP. Do not apply HTTP reconnect options to a local file, camera, RTSP source, or another protocol and assume they govern it.
- Check the installed FFmpeg build’s protocol help or error output to confirm the options are supported. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation notes that it is under continuous development and code may change, so verify against your installed version.
- Place HTTP options before the relevant
-i. Options in the wrong position may not configure the input you intend. - Keep the stream key private. Use a placeholder in scripts shared with others, and restrict access to any file that contains the actual key.
- Test the source and destination configuration independently where possible. A retry policy cannot correct an unavailable upstream, authentication failure, invalid destination, or incompatible stream setup.
If YouTube publishing drops, investigate output recovery separately
When FFmpeg continues reading its input but writing to YouTube fails, changing HTTP input options addresses the wrong side of the pipeline. FFmpeg documents output recovery separately; its FIFO muxer documentation describes recovery-related controls for certain temporary failures. That is a distinct mechanism to assess, not proof that a YouTube session will resume automatically or continue from the same video frame.

Retries are not a guarantee of uninterrupted broadcasting: they can be bounded, the source can remain unavailable, and authentication or configuration errors can persist. No reliability success rate is established by the cited documentation.
Common failure cases
- The input reaches EOF and exits:
-reconnectalone is for disconnection before EOF. For an appropriate live or endless HTTP input, consider-reconnect_at_eof 1; it does not turn a finite file into a looping playlist. - A non-HTTP input does not reconnect: HTTP protocol options do not apply to that input protocol. Use the recovery mechanism documented for the actual source.
- YouTube stops receiving while the source remains available: This is an output or destination problem, not evidence that HTTP input reconnect is missing. Check the ingestion configuration and investigate FFmpeg output recovery separately.
- Retries continue without restoring service: The upstream may still be down, or the error may be permanent, such as authentication or setup failure. Bound retries and verify the source and destination rather than widening retry conditions indiscriminately.
- FFmpeg reports an unrecognized option: Confirm the option is supported by the installed build and appears before the input it is intended to configure.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream from uploaded videos rather than maintaining an FFmpeg process, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera.
