You can run a 24/7 YouTube lofi stream from Ubuntu by looping a prepared audio-video file through FFmpeg and sending it to the ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. For a 1080p30 H.264 stream, YouTube’s current guidance lists 5 Mbps as the minimum video bitrate, recommends 14 Mbps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval. Those settings are not India-specific: choose a bitrate your actual upload connection can sustain reliably.

What you need before configuring FFmpeg

  • An Ubuntu computer or hosted Ubuntu machine that can remain online, with stable upload capacity.
  • A media file containing both the visual and lofi audio, prepared with a clean loop point. A combined file avoids synchronization and playlist-length problems between separate audio and video inputs.
  • Rights to use every music and visual element in a public livestream and, if relevant, for monetization. Keep records of licenses or permissions.
  • An FFmpeg build with the encoders your command requires, plus the YouTube Live ingest URL and stream key.

If your source is a still image and separate music files, render them into a suitable video asset first or build and thoroughly test a filter and playlist pipeline. The command below assumes the input already contains audio and video.

Prepare Ubuntu and check your FFmpeg build

Install FFmpeg using your chosen Ubuntu package source or another maintained distribution method. Check the installed version and available encoders:

ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -encoders

The example uses libx264; it will not work unless that encoder is included in your build. FFmpeg documents its native AAC encoder, but encoder availability can vary with how a particular build was configured. Consult the FFmpeg documentation and verify the installed build rather than assuming every Ubuntu package has identical options.

Create a YouTube Live stream and protect its key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live and create or select a stream.
  2. Copy the server or ingest URL and stream key provided for that stream. Use the exact endpoint and protocol Studio shows; do not substitute a URL or key from an example.
  3. Store the key in a protected configuration or environment file readable only by the service account, or use an appropriate systemd credential mechanism. Do not commit it to source control or expose it in public scripts, logs, or screenshots.
  4. After FFmpeg connects, check the preview in Live Control Room before relying on the stream.

YouTube’s encoder setup guidance calls for both the stream URL and key and recommends checking the preview.

Choose resolution, bitrate, and audio settings

Use a representative upload test and consider how much headroom remains when other devices or services use the same connection. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video movement similar to the actual broadcast and monitoring stream health. India does not require a different FFmpeg command; the relevant local variable is the reliability of your actual uplink.

Setting 1080p30 starting point How to apply it
Video codec and bitrate H.264; YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p30. The command uses 5 Mbps. Increase toward the recommended value only if the host and connection can sustain it, or lower the resolution and bitrate.
Keyframe interval Two seconds recommended. At 30 frames per second, a GOP of 60 frames gives a two-second interval.
Rate control and transport CBR and RTMP/RTMPS are among YouTube’s recommendations. Use the protocol and ingest endpoint shown for the particular stream.
Audio YouTube recommends AAC or MP3, 44.1 kHz stereo; its guidance lists 128 Kbps stereo audio. The example uses AAC at 128 Kbps, 44.1 kHz, stereo.

These are YouTube’s platform recommendations, not a guarantee that an India-based connection—or any connection—can sustain a chosen rate continuously. YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance includes bitrate guidance by resolution; choose a lower resolution if testing shows insufficient dependable headroom.

  -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60
  -b:v 5000k -maxrate 5000k -bufsize 10000k
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv 'INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY'

Replace the destination with the exact ingest URL and key from YouTube Studio; the text shown is a placeholder, not a usable destination. Protect the key as described above. The example targets 1080p30 at YouTube’s listed 5 Mbps minimum, with a two-second GOP and the audio settings described above. It assumes the file has both audio and video and the installed build includes libx264. Test the exact command with your FFmpeg version and asset before leaving it unattended.

The -stream_loop -1 option loops the input indefinitely, while -re reads it at its native rate rather than sending the file as fast as possible. If your visual is mostly static, 720p may be a sensible alternative when upload headroom or encoding capacity is limited; weigh the reduced detail against greater resilience to bitrate fluctuations and confirm the appropriate bitrate in YouTube’s settings guidance. Do not assume that independent audio and video loops will remain synchronized or transition cleanly.

Run it unattended with systemd and verify the remote stream

Process supervision can restart FFmpeg after some local failures, but it cannot prove that YouTube is receiving healthy audio and video. Configure a systemd service to start after networking is available, run under a dedicated unprivileged user, and restart after process exit with a sensible delay. Make sure that account can read the media and protected credentials.

Follow local output with:

journalctl -u <service-name> -f

Pair those local logs with a check routine or alert that also verifies the remote stream in YouTube Live Control Room. A running FFmpeg process alone is not evidence of a healthy YouTube broadcast.

End-to-end test checklist

  1. Start the service and confirm that YouTube Live Control Room receives the stream and displays its preview.
  2. Check the audio, aspect ratio, frame rate, bitrate, and YouTube stream-health messages.
  3. Test with representative motion and audio, not just a static or silent sample.
  4. Simulate a process restart and a network interruption, then verify that the remote stream recovers as intended.
  5. Repeat the check after any restart; YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring live health.

Account for YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit

YouTube’s encoder setup page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not promise that a continuous 24-hour broadcast will become one automatically archived video. Check current Live Control Room behavior and decide how to manage the live session and any recordings you need.

Copyright, reused content, and monetization are separate checks

Use original music and visuals or material whose rights explicitly cover the intended livestream. A license or permission to use music does not by itself guarantee YouTube Partner Program approval or monetization. YouTube’s monetization policies separately consider whether content is original and authentic; its examples include collections of songs by different artists as ineligible for monetization even where the creator has permission.

As of the YouTube Partner Program eligibility page checked October 3, 2026, listed requirements include compliance with monetization policies, availability in the creator’s country or region, no active Community Guidelines strikes, two-step verification, access to advanced features, and a linked AdSense for YouTube account. The page lists 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers plus 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days; channels are reviewed after applying. Requirements can change, so check the current YouTube Partner Program eligibility information. YouTube’s monetization policies address reused and inauthentic content separately from rights clearance.

Choose a local or hosted Ubuntu machine

Option What to consider
Ubuntu machine at home or in a studio It depends on local power and network continuity, adequate upload headroom, storage for the media, and access to the machine for maintenance.
Hosted Ubuntu machine Consider the hosting cost, included storage and network terms, remote administration, and whether its upload capacity and location suit the stream.

Neither option is universally better. Compare actual continuity, storage, administration, and ongoing costs for your setup; the YouTube and FFmpeg documentation does not establish a required hardware model or a universally suitable provider.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
FFmpeg reports that an encoder is unavailable. The installed build may not include libx264 or another requested encoder. Run ffmpeg -encoders; use a build with the needed encoder or adapt the command to an available encoder.
YouTube does not show a preview or reports poor stream health. Wrong ingest URL or key, an unsustainable bitrate, or an encoding/output problem. Recheck the exact Studio endpoint and key, local FFmpeg logs, selected settings, and Live Control Room health. Reduce resolution or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the target.
Audio is missing, cuts out, or drifts out of sync. The input may not contain audio, or separately looped sources may have mismatched durations or transitions. Confirm the input’s audio track and test a combined audio-video loop file before the live run.
FFmpeg has stopped after a host or network interruption. The local process exited or connectivity failed; a restart does not establish that YouTube recovered. Inspect journalctl, verify the service restarted, then confirm the remote preview and stream health in Live Control Room.
A continuous broadcast does not appear as one 24-hour archive. YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours. Plan the live session and recording workflow around the current platform behavior rather than expecting one automatic 24-hour archive.
