How to Configure FFmpeg for 720p YouTube Streaming on a Low-Cost VPS in India

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a prerecorded video, FFmpeg can send a 720p30 H.264 stream to YouTube from an India-based VPS using RTMPS, a constant 8 Mbps video target, a two-second keyframe interval, and 128 kbps stereo AAC. The command below is a starting configuration based on YouTube’s published recommendations—not a verified benchmark: a low-cost VPS may not encode your source at real-time speed, so test the exact instance and content before relying on it.

What you need before configuring FFmpeg

  • A VPS with an India-region location, an FFmpeg build that includes libx264 and RTMPS support, and permission to send outbound traffic to YouTube’s ingest service.
  • A prerecorded input file, such as an MP4, accessible on the VPS.
  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and a stream configured in YouTube Live Control Room. Copy the ingest URL and stream key from there.
  • Enough sustained CPU capacity to encode the source in real time and a network route that can sustain the stream’s aggregate bitrate with headroom.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264 at 8 Mbps recommended and 3 Mbps minimum for both 720p30 and 720p60. It recommends RTMPS, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval, with no more than four seconds between keyframes. For stereo audio, YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. See YouTube’s encoder settings. These are YouTube recommendations, not proof that a particular VPS can sustain them.

Configure a 720p30 stream from a prerecorded file

This illustrative command scales and pads the input to 1280×720 without distorting its aspect ratio, outputs 30 frames per second, encodes H.264 using a CPU-conscious starting preset, and sends stereo AAC audio over RTMPS:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
  -vf "scale=1280:720:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1280:720:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2,fps=30,format=yuv420p"
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -profile:v main
  -b:v 8M -minrate 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M
  -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv 'rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
  1. Check the FFmpeg build. Run ffmpeg -encoders and confirm that libx264 is available. Check protocol support with ffmpeg -protocols and confirm RTMPS is present. Build options vary; the command will not work as written if a required encoder or protocol is missing.
  2. Replace the input placeholder. Change input.mp4 to the actual path on the VPS. The -re option paces file input in real time rather than sending it as fast as the machine can read it. FFmpeg documents real-time input pacing and RTMPS in its protocol documentation.
  3. Choose whether to loop. Keep -stream_loop -1 to repeat the file indefinitely. Remove that option if it should play once; the stream’s behavior after the file ends depends on how you manage the FFmpeg process and YouTube broadcast.
  4. Use your own YouTube ingest details. Replace both placeholders in the final URL with the ingest address and private stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not expose it in public scripts, screenshots, repositories, or logs.
  5. Start with the recommended target and check the output. The command sets a 30 fps output and a GOP of 60 frames, which corresponds to two seconds at 30 fps. It targets 8 Mbps video and 128 kbps audio. Watch FFmpeg’s reported processing speed and YouTube’s stream-health indicators while testing.

The filter maintains the source’s aspect ratio and adds padding as needed to fill a 1280×720 frame. If the input is already 1280×720 with the intended frame rate and pixel format, you may simplify or omit the filter. Any change should be tested with the actual file. FFmpeg’s codec documentation describes encoder controls, but exact rate-control behavior can depend on the build and encoder: FFmpeg codec documentation.

What the key encoding settings do

  • -preset veryfast is a reasonable starting point for a CPU-constrained server, not a guarantee of real-time encoding or an established best preset for your source. Faster presets generally trade encoding efficiency for lower CPU demand; validate rather than assuming a preset will solve overload.
  • -b:v 8M -minrate 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M requests a constant-rate-style 8 Mbps video target with a two-second buffer. YouTube recommends CBR, but the exact behavior depends on FFmpeg and the encoder build.
  • -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 sets a fixed 60-frame GOP at 30 fps and disables scene-cut keyframes, producing a two-second keyframe interval.
  • -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2 selects AAC stereo at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz, matching YouTube’s stereo audio guidance.
  • -f flv selects the container commonly used for RTMP-family ingest. The example sends it to an RTMPS address; RTMPS is RTMP over a secure SSL connection, as described in FFmpeg’s protocol documentation.

AWS’s separate IVS documentation also shows an FFmpeg libx264, veryfast, and RTMPS command, but it is only a syntax example for another service—not authority for YouTube settings: AWS IVS streaming setup.

Choose 720p30 or 720p60—and when to lower bitrate

Output YouTube H.264 guidance Practical implication
720p30 8 Mbps recommended; 3 Mbps minimum A lower frame rate can reduce the amount of motion the encoder must process, but real-time capacity still depends on the source, filters, CPU allocation, and network route.
720p60 8 Mbps recommended; 3 Mbps minimum At the same resolution and bitrate guidance, 60 fps requires handling twice as many frames per second as 30 fps. Confirm the VPS can sustain the selected workload.

The 3 Mbps figure is YouTube’s stated minimum for these H.264 modes, not a promised quality level or a fix for a slow CPU. Lowering bitrate can reduce network demand while visibly reducing detail, especially in motion. CPU encoding load and network capacity are separate constraints; reduce bitrate only when it addresses the measured problem, then review YouTube’s stream health.

Check the VPS before committing to a plan

No named India VPS plan has been verified here as both low-cost and capable of sustained 720p encoding. An India-region listing or an “unmetered” label does not establish a suitable recurring price, sustained CPU performance, or continuous usable bandwidth. A provider listing such as Soft Host VPS Plans should be checked directly for current terms; it is not a performance endorsement.

Before purchasing, confirm these terms with the provider:

  • Allocated CPU, whether it is shared or dedicated, and any sustained-use or throttling policy.
  • RAM, operating-system support, outbound port restrictions, and whether continuous streaming traffic is permitted.
  • Transfer limits or fair-use terms, and sustained outbound throughput—not just an advertised port speed.
  • Support coverage and service terms relevant to a process expected to run continuously.

The video payload alone targets 8 Mbps, with audio and protocol overhead adding to total outbound traffic. The route must therefore sustain more than the stream’s aggregate bitrate with operational headroom. A generic bandwidth label cannot establish that it will.

Test the exact source and instance before going live

  1. Install or build FFmpeg on the VPS, verify the required encoder and RTMPS support, and use the intended input file.
  2. Run a representative test with the actual content, including its most demanding motion and audio. Do not infer sustained performance from a short startup or an unrelated sample.
  3. Observe FFmpeg’s processing speed. If it falls below real time, the instance is not keeping up with the requested output under that workload.
  4. Monitor host CPU and network use while the test runs. Separate a CPU/decoding/filter bottleneck from a network or route problem before changing settings.
  5. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages and review its warnings. YouTube recommends representative pre-event tests and monitoring stream health in its encoder guidance.

This command and configuration are illustrative and have not been executed or benchmarked on an India VPS. A VPS’s CPU allocation, source complexity, input format, filters, and network conditions determine whether it can keep up.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
FFmpeg reports that libx264 is unavailable The installed build does not include the encoder. Check ffmpeg -encoders; install or build an FFmpeg version with libx264 support.
RTMPS URL or connection fails Wrong ingest URL or key, missing RTMPS support, outbound restrictions, or a route problem. Copy the current ingest details from YouTube Live Control Room, keep the key private, verify RTMPS support and outbound access, and check the provider’s port policy.
Processing speed stays below 1× The VPS cannot encode the source and filters in real time with the selected settings. Check CPU use and source decoding/filter load. Test a less demanding source, reduce output frame rate if appropriate, or try a faster preset; then repeat the sustained test. Lowering bitrate alone does not guarantee lower encoding complexity.
YouTube reports unstable or insufficient stream health Insufficient or inconsistent outbound throughput, excessive bitrate for the route, or problems with the ingest connection. Check network use, provider transfer and throughput terms, and YouTube’s stream-health messages. Test a lower bitrate only as a quality compromise and confirm the result.
Video is stretched, cropped, or has bars The source aspect ratio differs from 16:9 or the scaling filter was changed. Use the provided scale-and-pad filter to preserve aspect ratio within 1280×720. Expect padding where the source shape does not fill the frame; do not stretch the image to remove it.
Audio is missing or not stereo The input has no audio, or the selected stream/layout differs from the expected stereo path. Inspect the input’s audio streams and channel layout. The example requests AAC stereo at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz; confirm the resulting stream and YouTube health.

Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules

Having a video file and a working encoder does not establish that you have the rights to stream its contents. Use material you own or are authorized to broadcast, including music, footage, and any third-party material. YouTube’s encoder-settings page covers technical configuration, not whether a particular video is legally usable; review the applicable YouTube rules and rights for your content before scheduling a stream. Replaying a file with -stream_loop -1 does not change its rights status or guarantee that YouTube will treat it as eligible original content.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded recordings rather than configuring and maintaining an FFmpeg process on a VPS, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos on YouTube. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs from the cloud. Your uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, with no re-encode or quality tiers. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
