Measure upload speed where and when you will stream, leave bandwidth headroom, then test the settings before going live. YouTube recommends 20% headroom; its H.264 guidance lists 3 Mbps for 360p30, 4 Mbps for 480p30, and 8 Mbps for 720p30 or 720p60. These are recommendations, not guarantees of a stable connection.
1. Check the upload speed you can sustain
Run an internet speed test from the same location and connection you plan to use for the stream. Focus on the upload result: download speed does not tell you how much video you can send to YouTube. YouTube says the total stream bitrate cannot exceed the available upload bandwidth and recommends keeping 20% headroom. YouTube Help: Streaming tips.
- If other people or devices share the connection, leave room for their traffic as well as the stream.
- Repeat the test near the time of day the stream will run; a single test may not reflect a busy or variable connection.
- Do not infer a setting from a national or regional average. Your usable upload capacity depends on the actual connection and conditions at your streaming location.
As a rough planning calculation, reserve one fifth of the measured upload capacity and use the rest as the maximum budget for the stream. For example, a sustained 5 Mbps upload leaves about 4 Mbps after 20% headroom. Treat that as a ceiling to test against, not a promise that the connection will remain stable.
2. Choose a bitrate and resolution that fit
The following are YouTube’s recommended H.264 live ingestion bitrates. They are settings guidance, not independently measured minimums or a guarantee that a connection at the listed rate will be stable. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

| Live resolution and frame rate | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 360p30 | 3 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 4 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
Compare your measured, sustained upload capacity after reserving headroom with the bitrate for the resolution you want. If it cannot accommodate that bitrate, start with a lower resolution, then test. A lower resolution can reduce the required bitrate, but it cannot cure a fluctuating or overloaded connection by itself.
How to make the trade-off
- Choose 360p30 or 480p30 when the connection cannot reliably support the higher recommended rates. This reduces image detail, but can make a stream more practical on limited upload bandwidth.
- Choose 720p30 rather than 720p60 if you want 720p but do not need the smoother motion of 60 frames per second. YouTube lists the same recommended H.264 bitrate for both, so do not assume that switching from 60 to 30 fps alone allows you to halve the bitrate.
- Try 1080p30 only when the connection can sustain the recommended bitrate with headroom and a representative test remains healthy.
These figures are specifically for H.264. YouTube also documents H.265/HEVC and AV1 for live video, with codec-specific bitrate guidance; support and practical performance depend on your encoder and hardware. Do not assume a newer codec is available or faster on an older or constrained device. Use the matching codec table in YouTube’s live encoder settings if you choose one of those codecs.

3. Set the live encoder correctly
In the encoder you use, configure the stream to match the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate you selected. YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS as the secure transport protocol. The keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. Encoder menus differ, so consult the software’s own instructions for the exact control names rather than assuming a universal menu path.
- Bitrate: set the video bitrate to the selected YouTube recommendation, or lower it if testing shows the connection cannot sustain it. Keep the total stream within your available upload budget.
- Rate control: use CBR, as YouTube recommends for live encoding.
- Keyframes: set an interval of two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
- Transport: use RTMPS when the encoder offers YouTube’s recommended secure transport.
- Stream destination: select YouTube Live and use the stream key associated with the intended broadcast. Treat the key as a password: do not publish or share it, and replace it in YouTube if it is exposed.
YouTube automatically transcodes an incoming live stream into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. That does not reduce the upload bandwidth you need to deliver a stable feed to YouTube.

4. Test before committing to a continuous stream
Run a private or otherwise appropriate test broadcast before relying on a configuration for a long event. Use the same connection, encoder settings, and content characteristics you expect during the real stream. A static image is not a useful substitute for footage with movement, and the test should include audio if the final stream will have it.
- Start the encoder with the intended resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR, keyframe interval, and RTMPS settings.
- Let representative video and audio run long enough to expose interruptions or fluctuations in the connection.
- Watch the stream-health status and alerts in YouTube Live Control Room during the test and while live.
- If YouTube reports insufficient bandwidth, lower the resolution or bitrate, then repeat the test. Do not assume that a change has fixed the problem until stream health improves under representative conditions.
YouTube’s live streaming error-message guidance recommends considering a lower resolution when available bandwidth is insufficient.

5. Live bitrate is not finished-video compression
Changing the live encoder bitrate controls the feed sent to YouTube during a broadcast. Compressing a finished documentary file before uploading it is a separate workflow. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings cover finished-video formats and bitrates; those file-upload figures are not live ingestion presets. For continuous live streaming, use the live encoder guidance instead.
6. Keep continuous streaming rights-safe
Before looping a documentary, verify that you have the rights or permission to stream its video, music, narration, photographs, and other included material on YouTube. A video that you can watch or download is not automatically cleared for continuous public rebroadcast. Review any license terms and keep documentation of permissions; do not treat technical ability to loop a file as proof that you may stream it.
