To remove a purchased Kindle book from your Amazon account and its registered Kindle devices and apps, choose Permanently Delete and confirm. Choose Remove Download or Remove from Device only when you want to free space: those options leave the book in your cloud library for redownloading.
Before you delete a book
First identify what kind of title it is: a purchased Kindle book, a subscription or Prime Reading loan, a public-library loan, or a file transferred by USB. The available action depends on its source.
- Check the Amazon account. The account that owns the purchase or loan is the one whose library you need to manage.
- Consider future access. Amazon says a purchased Kindle book permanently deleted from the cloud must be repurchased to read again.
- Save important reading notes first. Amazon’s deletion guidance confirms what happens to the book, but does not guarantee that every note, highlight, bookmark, or reading position can be restored afterward. Copy or export information you cannot afford to lose.
Amazon’s help pages and Kindle Paperwhite 11th-generation guide document the distinction between local removal and cloud deletion. Exact labels and menu placement can vary by Kindle model, software version, app, and regional Amazon interface.

- Connect the Kindle to Wi-Fi so the change can synchronize.
- Open Your Library. If needed, filter to Books or search for the title.
- Open the book’s three-dot menu, or press and hold its cover.
- Choose Permanently Delete.
- Read the warning, then confirm.
Amazon says this removes the title from the cloud account and registered Kindle devices and apps. It is not just a local cleanup: Amazon says you will need to repurchase a purchased title if you want it again. This action does not automatically erase copies saved outside the Amazon account, such as separately stored files or screenshots. Amazon’s Kindle removal guidance

Delete a book through Amazon’s website
Use Amazon’s account-level content management if the Kindle does not offer the permanent-delete option. Amazon’s Kindle Paperwhite guide directs readers to its device-support and content-management page for managing Kindle content; its account navigation and labels may change.
- In a browser, sign in to the Amazon account that owns the title.
- Open Account & Lists, then find Manage Your Content and Devices. Depending on the current account interface, this may appear under a newer digital-content or content-library area.
- Open the Books or Kindle-content category and search for the title.
- Open the title’s Actions or three-dot menu.
- Choose the option that permanently deletes the cloud copy and confirm. The wording may differ from the Kindle’s Permanently Delete label.
Amazon’s guide identifies Manage Your Content and Devices as the place to manage Kindle content, settings, and account information. If the title remains in the account library after you confirm deletion, use the troubleshooting steps below.

Remove a download without deleting the book
If your goal is to reclaim storage on one device, open the title’s menu in Your Library and choose Remove Download or Remove from Device. This removes the local copy but keeps the purchased title in the Amazon cloud, so you can download it again. It does not remove the title from the account library or other registered devices.

On Kindle e-readers, Amazon documents both device-only removal and permanent deletion. In the Kindle mobile app, press and hold the cover and open the three-dot menu; the available controls depend on the content type. See Amazon’s explanation of Kindle content removal.

Return borrowed books instead
Borrowed titles are not purchases. To end access, use the return control for the service that supplied the book.
Kindle Unlimited
In the Kindle mobile app, press and hold the cover, tap the three-dot Menu, then choose Return to Kindle Unlimited. Amazon says returning the loan removes the title from your library.

Prime Reading
In the Kindle mobile app, press and hold the cover, tap the three-dot Menu, then choose Return. Amazon says the title is removed from your library; purchase it if you want to keep a copy. The available controls for both services are described in Amazon’s Kindle app guidance.

Public-library loans
Return the book through the library or lending service that supplied it. If an expired loan or cover still appears on the Kindle afterward, synchronize the device and remove any leftover local copy. Library-provider workflows differ, so a Kindle purchase’s permanent-delete control is not a universal way to return every library loan.

Delete a book transferred by USB
A file transferred directly to a Kindle by USB is not stored in Amazon’s cloud library. Amazon says removing it deletes the local copy rather than changing an Amazon account record. To remove it from the Kindle:
- Connect the Kindle to a computer with a USB cable.
- Open the Kindle’s storage and then the
documentsfolder. - Delete the transferred file.
- Safely eject the Kindle.
If you want to keep the document, save a separate copy before deleting it from the Kindle. Amazon’s content-removal guidance distinguishes USB-transferred files from cloud-backed Kindle content.
If the book still appears after deletion
A cover that remains on a device does not by itself prove that the cloud deletion failed. Check whether the book is still downloadable from the account, separately from whether the device has refreshed its library display.

- Connect to Wi-Fi or mobile data, then synchronize the Kindle or app.
- Check the library filter. A title under an All or cloud view may not be a downloaded file.
- Restart the Kindle or app and check again.
- Check the account’s web-based content-management page for the title.
- If the title remains associated with the account after permanent deletion, contact Amazon Kindle Customer Service.

Actions that do not delete a book from the account
- Deleting a collection removes the organizational grouping, not the books inside it.
- Deregistering a Kindle removes content from that physical device, but purchased Amazon books remain in the cloud.
- Factory resetting a Kindle removes downloaded and transferred content from the device; it does not erase the cloud library.
- Removing a download deletes only the local copy.
