Complete Copyright School
- Find the prompt. Open the copyright-strike notification or YouTube Studio and select the Copyright School link or prompt shown for your account. YouTube does not document one universal screen-by-screen interface, so follow the prompt available to you.
- Finish the school. Copyright School is required for the route in which a strike expires after a waiting period.
- Track the strike date. YouTube says the strike expires 90 days after the date it was applied, provided Copyright School is completed. If you had already completed the school, the 90 days still run from the strike date—not from when you completed it. What happens to the livestream and your channel
YouTube states: “If your active live stream is removed for copyright, your channel will get a copyright strike and your live streaming access will be restricted for 7 days.” The seven-day restriction is distinct from the 90-day period for the strike-expiry route.
A strike is not the same as a Content ID claim. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party material, including another live broadcast. A match can trigger a warning and a placeholder image; if you stop using the material and address the issue, the stream may continue, but leaving it in place can lead to interruption or termination. YouTube also says a live stream can be terminated following a copyright or Community Guidelines strike. If the stream is archived, a Content ID claim may arrive after the broadcast ends. If you have a licence for material that matched, the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Without that, a stream can still be interrupted, including where the material is restricted by territory. A licence and a Content ID match are separate issues to resolve.

Choose the right way to resolve the strike
YouTube lists three strike-resolution routes. Choose based on whether you accept the removal, can obtain a retraction, or believe the removal was mistaken; they are not interchangeable ways of completing Copyright School. YouTube: About copyright removal requests

Before you submit a counter notification
YouTube says the claimant has 10 US business days after a counter notification is forwarded to respond with evidence of legal action. YouTube warns that false information or misuse of the process can have account or legal consequences. A counter notification is not a way to simply ask for leniency: use it only if you believe the removal was mistaken and understand what information may be shared. YouTube says legal help may be relevant for complex disputes or concerns about disclosure; a lawyer is not required just to complete Copyright School. If you received a scheduled removal notice
Some removal requests are scheduled, giving the uploader seven days to act before the content is removed and a strike is applied. During that window, deleting the video can avoid the strike. Once the removal and strike have taken effect, deleting the video does not resolve the strike; use one of the resolution routes above instead. Follow the deadline and instructions in the notice. Copyright precautions for future livestreams
- Use music, documentary footage, clips, and other material only when you have the necessary rights or a sound basis for an applicable copyright exception. A live broadcast is not exempt from copyright rules because it is temporary.
- If you have permission to use content that may be detected by Content ID, ask the rights holder whether your channel must be allowlisted before you go live.
- Act promptly on YouTube’s live warning: stop using the matched third-party material and address the notice rather than assuming the stream can continue unchanged.
- Distinguish an interruption or archived-stream Content ID claim from a copyright strike. Check Studio and the notice to see what action YouTube actually took.
YouTube says three copyright strikes within 90 days can make a channel subject to termination. This threshold concerns copyright strikes; do not treat a Content ID claim by itself as one of those strikes. YouTube: Understand copyright strikes
