Clearing Netflix cookies can help when the website is stuck, keeps asking you to sign in, or will not save account or profile changes. The quickest option is to visit netflix.com/clearcookies in the affected browser, then sign in again. This refreshes that browser’s Netflix session; it does not speed up your internet, improve video quality, or reset recommendations.
Before you start, make sure you know your Netflix sign-in details. The reset signs you out of Netflix in that browser. If you are using the Netflix app on a phone, TV, or streaming device, use the device-specific steps below instead.
What clearing Netflix cookies does—and does not do
Cookies are small pieces of data a website stores in your browser. They help preserve session information and preferences, so you may not need to re-enter details each time. They are not a copy of your Netflix account, viewing history, subscription, or profile. Netflix says deleting cookies resets cookie preferences, which may mean choosing them again the next time you visit.

| Refresh Netflix session or site information saved in the browser. | Increase internet speed or fix weak Wi-Fi. |
| Help with some sign-in loops, loading problems, or account and profile changes that fail to save. | Raise streaming resolution or stop buffering caused by a network problem. |
| Sign you out of Netflix in the affected browser. | Delete your profile or viewing history, cancel your subscription, or reset recommendations. |
| Reset Netflix cookie preferences. | Sign you out of Netflix on every device. |
Netflix presents its cookie reset as a troubleshooting step for certain browser problems, not as a general performance upgrade. See its guidance on browser and account-setting issues and cookie preferences.

Clear Netflix cookies with the official reset
- Open the browser where Netflix is having trouble.
- Go to netflix.com/clearcookies.
- Select Sign In.
- Enter your Netflix email address and password.
- Retry the page or account action that was failing.
You should expect to sign in again; there may not be a separate confirmation message. If the original problem remains, continue with the troubleshooting steps below. Netflix also recommends this reset in some connection and app troubleshooting and loading or freezing workflows.
Clear Netflix site data in a desktop browser
Chrome
For Chrome on desktop, Google’s documented route is More > Delete browsing data. Choose a time range, select the data types to remove, then select Delete data. You can also open chrome://settings/clearBrowserData in Chrome. Labels can change between releases.
Prefer deleting data for Netflix only if Chrome offers a site-specific option. Deleting all cookies can sign you out of other sites and remove their saved settings. Google notes that cookie deletion can remove site settings; pages may also load more slowly at first while files are downloaded again. See Google’s Chrome instructions.

Firefox, Edge, and Safari
Start with the Netflix-specific reset rather than clearing all browser data. If it does not help, use your browser’s privacy or history settings to find saved site data, remove Netflix data if that option is available, restart the browser, and sign in again. Menu names and paths vary by browser version and operating system, so check the browser’s current help if you need exact instructions.
Reset Netflix in the mobile app
Android phones and tablets
Android app storage is different from browser cookies. Netflix’s Android troubleshooting steps are:
- Find the Netflix app and tap and hold its icon.
- Select App info, then Storage & cache.
- Select Clear storage, then OK.
- Open Netflix and sign in again.
This removes Netflix downloads stored on that device and signs you out. Menu wording can vary by Android manufacturer. Do not use this step for a browser-only issue if you want to keep downloaded titles. See Netflix’s mobile troubleshooting steps.

The Netflix app does not use a browser-cookie control in the same way as Netflix in Safari or Chrome. To refresh the app session, Netflix’s steps are:
- Open Netflix and tap My Netflix in the lower-right corner.
- Tap the profile name at the top.
- Tap Sign Out, confirm, then sign in again.
Use this app sign-out for an app session problem; use the browser reset if the problem is in Netflix on the web.
Reset Netflix on a TV or streaming device
Smart TVs, streaming players, consoles, and similar devices generally need an app or device reset—not a browser-cookie reset. If Netflix opens, look for Get Help and then Sign out, and confirm. If you are on an error screen, Netflix may offer Sign out or Reset. Restart the device and try Netflix again. The available labels depend on the device.

For the Windows Netflix app, distinguish the app from Netflix in a browser tab. Netflix says a Windows app session may appear as an Edge web browser in Manage Access and Devices.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Cookies, cache, app data, and sign-out are different
| Action | Where it applies | Main effect | Important consequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear Netflix cookies | Browser | Removes Netflix browser or session data. | Signs you out of Netflix in that browser. |
| Clear browser cache | Browser | Removes stored page files. | Some Netflix assets may need to load again. |
| Clear Netflix app storage | Android app | Resets the app’s local storage. | Signs you out and deletes downloads on that device. |
| Sign out | App, browser, TV, or device | Ends the current Netflix session. | You must sign in again on that device or app. |
| Sign out of all devices | Netflix account | Ends sessions across account devices. | This is much broader than resetting one browser. |
For a broader account sign-out or an unfamiliar session, use Manage Access and Devices, not cookie clearing. Netflix says device listings can take up to 48 hours to appear and may not include every device or type of activity.
If clearing cookies did not fix Netflix
Match the next step to where the failure occurs. A browser reset is unlikely to repair a network, app, device, or account problem.
Quick Recap
- Check the scope. Try Netflix in another supported browser or on another device. If only one browser fails, browser settings or extensions are more likely than a general connection issue.
- Restart the browser or app. Close it fully, reopen it, and retry. In a browser, temporarily disable extensions and test Netflix; if that works, re-enable extensions one at a time to identify a conflict. Netflix includes extension troubleshooting for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari.
- Check browser support and updates. If Netflix reports that the browser is unsupported or needs an update, follow Netflix’s guidance to update it or switch to a supported browser. See browser support and browser update errors.
- Restart the device or reset its Netflix app. Use the Android, iPhone/iPad, or TV steps above as appropriate. A TV’s firmware or an outdated app can cause problems that cookies cannot fix.
- Test the network. Check Netflix on another device connected to the same network. Restart the modem and router if appropriate, then test the connection at Fast.com. If the connection remains unreliable, contact your internet provider.
- Check for network restrictions. VPNs, proxies, DNS filtering, public Wi-Fi rules, or ISP restrictions can interfere with streaming. Cookie clearing does not remove those restrictions.
- Use the error-specific workflow. Netflix has separate instructions for some error codes, including this error-code guide, connection troubleshooting, and another error-code workflow.
Common reasons to choose a different fix
- Recommendations or viewing history: Cookie clearing is not a recommendation-management tool. Use Netflix profile and viewing-history controls for profile-level changes.
- Buffering or low video quality: Check the connection, Wi-Fi, device, and browser support. A cookie reset cannot increase available bandwidth or guarantee higher resolution.
- Account security: Clearing one browser’s cookies does not sign out every device. Review Manage Access and Devices if you suspect someone else is using the account.
- Shared computer privacy: Cookie deletion is not a complete privacy wipe. Sign out, do not save your password on a shared machine, and follow the computer owner’s privacy rules.
- Ads: Deleting cookies does not necessarily remove ads. Netflix says advertising-cookie settings can affect whether ads are based on advertising-cookie information, not whether advertisements appear.
