“Apple TV history” can mean several separate things: play history, the Continue Watching row, Watchlist items, Apple TV app searches, records held by connected streaming services, or Safari history. Apple’s controls apply to the Apple TV app profile; they are not a universal erase button for every service or device.
Clear Apple TV history on Apple TV 4K
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select TV.
- Select the relevant profile name.
- Choose Clear Play History.
- Confirm if prompted.
Apple describes this as removing information about what the current profile watched in the Apple TV app across devices using the same Apple Account and profile. It removes relevant shows and movies from Continue Watching. Apple’s broader TV app privacy guide also says the action removes items from Watchlist rows: Apple’s privacy-settings guide. Menu labels can differ by software version, profile configuration, country or region, and Apple TV model.
Clear history in the Apple TV app on a smart TV, streaming device, or game console
- Open the Apple TV app.
- Open its sidebar.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Clear Play History.

This is the app running on another manufacturer’s device, not the Apple TV 4K hardware box. Apple says play history can sync with the Apple TV app on other devices using the same account and profile, and that clearing it removes relevant Continue Watching and Watchlist items. - Open the Apple TV app.

- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then TV.
- Choose Clear Search History.
In the Apple TV app on another device
- Open the app and its sidebar.
- Select Settings.
- Select Clear Search History.

- Open the Apple TV app’s Home screen.
- Find the title in Continue Watching or Watchlist.
- Press and hold the clickpad, touch surface, center button, or equivalent control.
- Select Remove from Watchlist or the removal option shown.
Apple documents this press-and-hold removal behavior for Apple TV 4K in its Home screen guide. Removing a row item is not necessarily the same as deleting every underlying play-history record, and the available command can vary on third-party platforms.
Stop future viewing activity from shaping recommendations
Clearing existing history and preventing future use of viewing history are different actions.

- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then TV.
- Turn Use Play History off.
On iPhone and iPad, use the same path in the device’s Settings app: Settings > Apps > TV > Use Play History. Apple describes this switch as controlling whether viewing history is used for personalized recommendations and Continue Watching. Turn it off after clearing history if you want both an existing-history cleanup and reduced future personalization. The switch does not itself promise to erase records already stored.
What clearing Apple TV play history does not remove
- Apple TV purchases or rentals.
- Apple TV+, channel, or other subscriptions.
- Downloaded media on a device.
- History stored by Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Prime Video, YouTube, or another connected app.
- Safari or another browser’s history.
- Your Apple Account, device, or Apple TV profile.
- Another household member’s separate profile history.
Apple documents Clear Play History as a control for watched information used by the Apple TV app; it does not describe the control as deleting purchases, cancelling subscriptions, resetting hardware, or erasing external services. The Apple TV app can display content from connected apps and channels, so those services retain their own account controls: Apple’s Home screen guide.
If a title or history still appears
- Check the active Apple TV profile and Apple Account.
- Close and reopen the Apple TV app.
- Restart the Apple TV device or the television’s app environment.
- Check whether the item is in Continue Watching, Watchlist, a recommendation, or a connected app.
- Clear the title from the external streaming service’s own history if necessary.
- Check another Apple TV app device using the same account to see whether the change synchronized.
A title that remains visible may be a recommendation rather than a history entry, belong to another profile, or reflect cached interface data. Apple says play history syncs across Apple TV app devices using the same account and profile, making account and profile checks the first troubleshooting step. Availability and menu names can change with software updates and vary by country, region, device, and model.
