How to Choose the Right Concrete Mix for a DIY Project

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most small slabs, sidewalks, steps, curbs and patio work, start with a general-purpose bagged concrete mix. Use a fast-setting mix when setting posts and a quick set is genuinely useful, choose a crack-resistant formulation only where its label permits, and use a resurfacer or patching product for damaged existing concrete. The correct choice also depends on thickness, volume, water requirement, setting time, curing and local code—not just the picture on the bag.

Match the mix to the job first

Concrete products that look similar can be intended for very different work. Before buying, identify whether you are placing new concrete, setting a post, or repairing an existing surface. Then verify the product’s listed applications, required thickness, yield per bag, mixing method and curing instructions.

Project Starting point Verify before purchase
Small patio, sidewalk, step, curb or general concrete work General-purpose concrete mix Permitted use, slab thickness, bag yield, water amount and local requirements
Fence, mailbox or similar post Fast-setting concrete when a quick set fits the installation Hole dimensions, bracing, water method, set time and wait before loading
New slab where a crack-resistant product is appropriate Crack-resistant concrete mix Permitted uses, product-specific water table, consistency and curing directions
Worn, spalled or damaged existing concrete Repair-specific resurfacer or patcher Surface condition, repair depth and the product’s preparation instructions

General-purpose mix for ordinary new concrete

QUIKRETE identifies Concrete Mix No. 1101 for sidewalks, floors, steps, patios, curbs and downspout troughs. The manufacturer describes it as a blend of portland cement, sand and gravel or stone, with a stated 4000 psi average compressive strength. That is a manufacturer specification, not an independent laboratory comparison. The product is sold in 40-, 50-, 60- and 80-pound bags.

This is the sensible starting point when you are placing a new, non-specialty slab or small structural element and do not need an unusually rapid set or a repair compound. It is not automatically the right product for every footing, retaining wall, heavily loaded slab or code-sensitive installation.

Fast-setting mix for posts and time-sensitive placements

Fast-setting concrete serves a different purpose. The cited fast-setting technical sheet gives a set range of approximately 20 to 40 minutes and a four-hour wait before applying heavy objects under its stated conditions. Those times can change with temperature, water, soil and the exact product, so use the current bag label as the controlling instruction.

Fast-setting concrete is especially useful for fence, mailbox and sign posts when you can brace the post promptly and need to proceed without waiting for a conventional mix to set. A faster set also gives you less time to adjust a post, so have the hole, tools, level and bracing ready before adding water or dry mix.

Crack-resistant mix where the label allows it

A crack-resistant formulation can be appropriate for a permitted slab or similar project, but it is not a universal substitute for ordinary concrete. Its own water range, consistency requirements and curing directions apply. The crack-resistant technical sheet specifies approximately 6 to 10 pints (2.8 to 4.7 liters) for an 80-pound bag, with a lower starting amount and an expected maximum. For a 50-pound bag, it lists approximately 3¾ pints starting water and up to 6¼ pints expected maximum.

Do not transfer those quantities to another product. Different cement, aggregate and package sizes need different water amounts, and excess water can weaken the finished concrete or cause finishing and cracking problems.

Repair products for existing concrete

If the concrete is already in place and the problem is a worn surface, spalling or a damaged step, ordinary new-concrete mix may be the wrong tool. QUIKRETE’s project instructions identify separate resurfacing and step-repair products. Select a resurfacer or patcher based on the repair depth and condition of the substrate, then follow its preparation, bonding and curing procedure. A repair compound is designed to adhere in thin or localized applications that are different from a new slab pour.

Decide whether your project is a slab, post or repair

New slabs and small pours

Patios, sidewalks, small floors, steps and curbs are normally poured as a continuous mass with a planned thickness and a known volume. You mix the concrete to a stiff, moldable consistency, place it in the form, consolidate it, screed and finish it, then cure it according to the product directions.

QUIKRETE’s FAQ describes about 3.5 inches as a normal thickness for a patio, sidewalk or driveway slab, with an exception for the smaller sections made with its Walk Maker system. Treat 3.5 inches as manufacturer guidance, not a universal design rule. Soil, frost, drainage, reinforcement, vehicle loads and local building requirements can require a different design.

Posts in holes

Post setting is governed by the hole geometry and the installation method rather than by a slab thickness. The cited instructions advise sizing the hole at about three times the post width, placing gravel at the base, setting the post plumb and bracing it securely. They also give a depth based on a fraction of the above-ground post length. Soil type, frost exposure, wind and the post material can change the appropriate design, so use the complete current instructions and local requirements for your site.

Surface repairs

Repairs begin with diagnosis: determine whether the defect is a shallow surface wear, a deeper break at a step, or evidence of movement or drainage failure. A patch or resurfacer cannot correct an unstable base or structural movement. Use a product whose instructions cover the defect and repair depth, and remove unsound material before placing it.

Calculate how many bags you need

Measure volume before shopping

For a rectangular slab, multiply length by width by the planned thickness, using one unit system. In feet, the result is cubic feet. Convert inches of thickness to feet by dividing by 12. For example, a 10-by-10-foot area at 3.5 inches is approximately 10 × 10 × (3.5 ÷ 12), or 29.2 cubic feet of concrete before allowing for waste.

Irregular slabs can be split into rectangles, triangles or other simple shapes and added together. For a post, calculate the volume of the annular space between the hole and the post, multiplied by the filled depth. Measure the actual hole rather than relying on a nominal post size; a few inches of extra diameter can materially change the quantity.

Divide by the product’s stated yield

Bag weight is not the same as yield. The general-purpose mix is available in four bag sizes, but the yield must be taken from the specific package or current product information. Do not assume that an 80-pound bag yields exactly twice a 40-pound bag, because aggregate grading and packaging can affect the stated volume.

The fast-setting sheet gives an approximate yield of 0.375 cubic feet (11 liters) per 50-pound bag. A manufacturer example says two 50-pound bags set a 4-inch-diameter post in a 10-inch-diameter hole 2 feet deep. Use that example only as a check against your measured hole; it is not a substitute for calculating your own dimensions.

After dividing project volume by bag yield, round up to whole bags and allow a practical margin for uneven excavation, spillage and minor measurement error. Keep the product and bag size consistent when using the yield figure.

Use a calculator as a verification tool

QUIKRETE provides calculator paths for slabs, posts and cracks or joints. Enter the dimensions from your layout, then compare the result with your hand calculation and the yield printed for the exact product. A calculator cannot correct a wrong thickness, an oversized hole or a measurement entered in mixed units.

Water is product-specific

Read the exact bag or technical sheet

Water controls workability and strongly affects the finished concrete. Start with the amount stated for the product and bag size. Add only enough additional water to reach the specified consistency; never use a different mix’s water table as a shortcut.

For illustration, the crack-resistant sheet lists approximately 6 pints of starting water and up to 10 pints expected maximum for an 80-pound bag. For a 50-pound bag, it lists approximately 3¾ pints starting and up to 6¼ pints expected maximum. The target is stiff and moldable, with no dry pockets and no standing puddles.

QUIKRETE’s hand-mixing guidance gives about 3 quarts per 80-pound bag as an example for concrete mix. That example is not interchangeable with the crack-resistant table or with a fast-setting product. The label for the exact formulation and package controls.

Recognize the difference between slab mixing and post placement

A mixed slab is normally combined with measured water in a tub, wheelbarrow or other suitable container before placement. A post-setting method may call for placing dry mix around a braced post and adding water in the hole, or it may specify a different sequence. The fast-setting technical sheet gives separate directions for slab mixing and for adding water to dry mix in post holes. Follow the method written for your application rather than adapting one procedure to the other.

Tools, preparation and safety

Basic tools for a small slab

  • Mixing tub, mortar pan or wheelbarrow large enough for the batch
  • Shovel or hoe for turning the mix
  • Measuring pail dedicated to concrete water
  • Forms, stakes and a level
  • Screed board and finishing tools suited to the surface
  • Plastic sheeting or another method specified for curing

Stage the forms, reinforcement if required, tools and water before opening a bag. Once hydrated, concrete gives you a limited working window, especially in warm weather or with a fast-setting formulation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Additional tools for posts

  • Post-hole digger or auger
  • All-purpose gravel for the base where the instructions call for it
  • Level and temporary braces
  • Measuring tape for hole diameter and depth
  • Shovel and a container for any batch-mixed concrete

The cited post-setting guidance calls for eye protection, nitrile gloves and a mask when working with cement-based products. Wear the protection specified by the current product label and safety data sheet, avoid breathing dry powder, and wash cement from skin promptly. Keep other people away from wet concrete and stabilize forms or posts so they cannot shift while you work.

Procedure for a small slab or general concrete pour

  1. Confirm the design. Mark the area, verify the planned thickness, check drainage and make sure the work complies with applicable local requirements. Do not use a general DIY recipe for a structural footing or unusual load without qualified design guidance.
  2. Calculate and buy the quantity. Determine cubic feet, divide by the exact product yield and round up to whole bags. Keep bags dry until use.
  3. Build and check the forms. Stake them securely, check dimensions and confirm the top elevation and slope. Remove loose soil and prepare the base specified for the project.
  4. Measure the first water charge. Use the exact amount on the product directions. Do not estimate with an unmarked container.
  5. Mix thoroughly. Add dry mix gradually while turning it with a shovel or hoe. Scrape the bottom and corners so no dry pockets remain. Add only the additional water permitted by the instructions.
  6. Place promptly. Deposit the concrete into the form, work it into corners and consolidate it without adding random water to make placement easier.
  7. Screed and finish. Strike off excess material at the form tops, then apply only the finish appropriate to the product and surface. Avoid bringing excess water to the surface.
  8. Cure as directed. Protect the concrete from premature drying, weather and traffic using the product’s stated method and duration. Proper curing increases strength and durability; poor curing can ruin otherwise careful work.

Procedure for setting a post with fast-setting concrete

  1. Plan the hole. Measure the post and lay out a hole about three times the post width where the instructions call for that proportion. Establish the required depth, considering the above-ground length, soil and frost conditions.
  2. Dig and inspect. Remove loose material and standing water. Place the specified amount of gravel at the base when the instructions call for it.
  3. Position and brace the post. Set the post, check it in two directions with a level and attach braces strong enough to hold it plumb during the set.
  4. Measure the concrete. Use the hole’s measured diameter and fill depth to calculate volume. The fast-setting product sheet’s 0.375-cubic-foot yield per 50-pound bag and its two-bag example are reference points, not universal quantities.
  5. Choose the stated water method. Follow the fast-setting instructions for either mixing before placement or adding water to dry mix in the hole. These methods are not interchangeable with slab directions.
  6. Place and leave the post undisturbed. Work efficiently, keep the post aligned and do not remove braces during the stated set period. The cited sheet gives approximately 20 to 40 minutes for setting and a four-hour wait before heavy objects under its stated conditions.
  7. Load only after the required wait. Use the current label’s time for your temperature and application. A cool, wet or otherwise different site can behave differently from the manufacturer’s example.

Thickness, loading and code limits

Thickness is a design decision, not merely a way to use fewer bags. The approximately 3.5-inch patio, sidewalk or driveway guidance is a consumer starting point; it does not account for every soil, frost, drainage, reinforcement or vehicle load. A driveway carrying heavy vehicles, a footing supporting a structure, a retaining wall, or any work subject to permit or inspection may need engineering or local prescriptive details.

The cited consumer instructions do not establish a universal mix, thickness or reinforcement schedule for every climate and load. Check municipal requirements and, where the consequence of failure is significant, consult a qualified professional before excavation or pouring.

Troubleshooting common choices and mistakes

The mix is too dry

First verify that the full measured water was incorporated and that the batch was mixed long enough. Add only the small amount permitted by the product directions, then mix completely. Do not pour a large amount of water on top of a partly mixed batch; that creates weak, inconsistent concrete.

The mix is soupy

Stop adding water. Excess water can reduce strength and increase shrinkage and surface problems. If the batch has not been placed, correct it only according to the manufacturer’s instructions; do not guess at a dry-mix addition that changes the designed proportions.

The post moves

Recheck hole geometry, base gravel, plumb and bracing. A post that shifts while fast-setting concrete is hardening can remain permanently out of alignment. Keep the braces in place for the full stated period and wait before applying load.

There is less concrete than expected

Recalculate the volume using the actual slab thickness or hole diameter. Uneven excavation and oversized holes consume material quickly. Compare the measured volume with the exact bag yield, then buy additional bags from the same formulation if the batch is still workable. Avoid mixing products with different instructions in one continuous placement.

The surface is dusty or weak after curing

Possible causes include excess water, incomplete mixing, premature drying or traffic before adequate curing. The crack-resistant guidance specifically warns that poor curing can ruin an otherwise well-done job. Follow the current product’s curing procedure, and treat severe scaling, structural cracks or movement as a condition requiring a repair assessment rather than a cosmetic patch.

A practical buying checklist

  • Identify the work as new slab, post setting or repair.
  • Confirm that the product’s listed uses include your application.
  • Choose the thickness, hole diameter and depth before calculating quantity.
  • Record the exact bag size and stated yield.
  • Calculate volume in consistent units and round up to whole bags.
  • Read the water amount for that formulation and package; do not reuse another product’s number.
  • Check set time, working time and the wait before loading.
  • Prepare forms, bracing, tools, protective equipment and curing materials first.
  • Check local requirements for frost, drainage, reinforcement, structural loads and permits.
  • Keep the current label and safety data sheet available at the job site.

Bottom line: choose by application, then verify the numbers

Use a general-purpose mix for ordinary new patios, sidewalks, steps, floors and curbs; use fast-setting concrete for suitable post installations where its short set time helps; select crack-resistant concrete only for applications covered by its instructions; and use repair-specific products on damaged existing concrete. The final purchase decision should come from the exact product label: its permitted use, yield, water range, setting time and curing method. Accurate dimensions and disciplined water measurement matter as much as the mix category.
