How to Choose Camera Settings for Documentary Interviews on the Blackmagic PYXIS 6K

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The best PYXIS 6K interview setup is a repeatable decision process, not a universal preset. Start with the lens mount and delivery frame rate, then choose a sensor mode, shutter, exposure, white balance, Blackmagic RAW setting and audio input that fit the room and your post-production plan. Lock those choices before the interview, record a short test, and document them so every subject in the sequence matches.

Blackmagic Design lists a 36 × 24 mm full-frame sensor, 6048 × 4032 open-gate recording, 13 stops of dynamic range and dual native ISO values of 400 and 3200 for the PYXIS 6K. Those are camera specifications, not promises that one ISO, resolution or codec will produce the right result in every location.

Why there is no single “interview preset”

A talking-head interview may be a locked-off, softly lit portrait, a two-camera conversation in a mixed-light room, or a fast documentary setup in a cramped location. The correct settings change with the subject’s movement, the delivery standard, available light, flicker frequency, lens, recording time and the amount of color and reframing work planned after the shoot.

Think of the PYXIS 6K as a set of choices that must agree with one another:

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Frame rate must match the production and delivery standard.
  • Resolution and sensor mode must provide the framing or reframing latitude you need without creating an unmanageable post-production burden.
  • Shutter controls motion rendering and can also affect how lighting flicker appears.
  • ISO and exposure must place skin, highlights and shadows where you want them for that scene.
  • White balance must describe the actual light and remain consistent across coverage.
  • Blackmagic RAW compression must fit the desired image flexibility, storage capacity and editing system.
  • Audio input must match the microphone or mixer and be monitored while recording.

Firmware and available sensor rates can vary with the selected resolution and codec. Treat the camera’s current menus as the final authority for the mode you have chosen.

1. Confirm the mount before choosing a lens

The PYXIS 6K is sold in L-Mount, EF and PL versions. These are different camera variants, not interchangeable settings. Confirm the mount printed on the camera or its documentation before you build the lens package. A lens that fits one version may not mount on another, and electronic iris, focus or metadata behavior depends on the lens and mount combination.

Choose the lens after the mount is known

For an interview, select focal length and working distance based on the room and the desired relationship with the subject. A wider lens can show more environment but may exaggerate facial features when placed close. A longer lens gives a tighter, more compressed portrait but needs more distance. Check that the lens provides the focus and iris control your operator expects, and make sure any adapter preserves the clearance and control required by the chosen mount.

Do not use a lens recommendation that omits the mount variant. The same focal length is not a complete specification for a PYXIS 6K package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Set the project frame rate to the delivery standard

Choose the project frame rate before deciding on shutter. Blackmagic lists project rates including 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97 and 30 fps, among others. Select the rate required by the production, broadcaster, platform or finishing project rather than choosing the number that merely looks familiar.

Project choice What to check Interview consequence
23.98 or 24 fps Whether the delivery specification calls for a 23.98/24p timeline and whether the selected sensor mode and codec support the needed rate. Common for film-style and many documentary timelines; motion cadence differs from 25p or 29.97p.
25 fps Whether the project follows a 25p regional or broadcast standard. Use a shutter and lighting strategy that does not introduce local mains flicker.
29.97 or 30 fps Whether the delivery system, edit or archive requires 29.97/30p. Provides a different motion cadence and changes the shutter-speed equivalent of a chosen shutter angle.
Other available rates Verify the exact rate in the camera menu for the selected resolution and codec. Maximum sensor rate is not identical in every mode; the specification depends on resolution and codec.

Set the camera’s project frame rate, not just a playback or variable-frame-rate option. Then verify the maximum sensor rate shown for the selected resolution and recording format. If two cameras cover the same interview, set both to the same project rate and confirm that their timecode and audio plans use that rate.

3. Choose resolution and sensor mode for the edit

The PYXIS 6K supports multiple 6K, 4K, Super 35, Super 16 and HD modes. The useful choice is the mode that gives the finishing team enough image area for the intended framing while keeping media and processing practical.

Open gate versus a delivery-shaped frame

Open-gate recording uses the full listed sensor area of 6048 × 4032. It can be valuable when a vertical or alternate crop may be required, or when the editor needs extra room to reframe a single-camera interview. A delivery-shaped 6K mode, such as the manufacturer gallery’s 6K 16:9 (6048 × 3408) example, records a frame closer to a conventional widescreen finish and may simplify monitoring and post work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that more pixels automatically produce a better interview. A higher-resolution or less-compressed file can consume more card space, backup capacity and editing bandwidth. Conversely, a lower mode may remove reframing latitude you will later need. Decide from the final aspect ratio, expected crop, number of cameras and archive policy.

Priority Mode direction Trade-off
Maximum reframing or multiple delivery crops Consider open gate or another larger sensor mode. More image data and processing; confirm the post system and storage plan.
Standard widescreen documentary delivery Consider a 16:9 6K mode when its framing matches the project. Less vertical crop area than open gate, but a more direct match to a 16:9 timeline.
Long interviews, limited media or older edit systems Consider 4K, Super 35, Super 16 or HD modes supported by the project. Reduced resolution or crop flexibility; verify that the selected mode still meets the delivery requirement.

After selecting a mode, check the camera’s displayed frame-rate limit and record a short clip. A mode that exists in the general specification may have different rate or codec limits than another mode.

4. Use shutter as a motion and lighting decision

A 180° shutter is a sensible starting point for conventional interview motion. Blackmagic Design’s gallery documents a PYXIS 6K example at 23.976 fps with a 180° shutter. That example is evidence of one setup, not a rule that every interview must use 180°.

When to keep 180°

Keep the starting angle when the subject’s gestures look natural, the room lights do not flicker and the project calls for ordinary motion blur. At 23.976 fps, the gallery example pairs 180° with the expected film-style cadence.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

When to adjust

  • Flicker: If LED, fluorescent or mains-powered fixtures pulse in the recorded image, test another shutter angle or speed that is compatible with the local power frequency and fixture driver.
  • Subject movement: A faster shutter can reduce blur for animated gestures, while a slower shutter increases blur. Judge the result in a short test rather than changing it by habit.
  • Creative intent: A deliberately crisp or smeared look may call for a different setting, but record that choice in the camera report so matching shots are not mistaken for an exposure error.

Change shutter only after confirming frame rate. The same angle produces a different shutter speed at different frame rates.

5. Set ISO and exposure for the actual room

Blackmagic lists dual native ISO values of 400 and 3200. “Native” describes the camera’s sensor modes; it does not mean ISO 400 is always cleanest, ISO 3200 is always preferable in darkness, or either value automatically gives a correct exposure.

A repeatable exposure decision

  1. Measure the scene as lit. Decide where the face, bright practicals, windows and dark background should fall. Protect important highlights before trying to brighten every shadow.
  2. Choose the lens aperture for the interview. Depth of field, subject separation and the lens’s rendering may matter as much as the amount of light reaching the sensor.
  3. Use filtration or lighting when needed. Neutral-density filtration can preserve an aperture in a bright room; added or repositioned light may be preferable to pushing ISO in a dark room.
  4. Select the ISO mode that gives workable exposure latitude. Compare the two listed native values in the context of the scene, monitoring noise and highlight placement rather than treating the number as a preset.
  5. Record a test clip. Check the subject’s skin, hair highlights, glasses and bright background details at the intended exposure. Review the clip on the same monitoring path used for the interview.

Exposure depends on available light, aperture, filtration and the highlight/shadow placement you want. The PYXIS 6K’s listed 13 stops of dynamic range are a camera specification, not a guarantee that every scene will retain 13 usable stops after lighting, exposure and post-production choices.

6. Set white balance deliberately and keep it stable

Set white balance for the light that actually illuminates the subject, then keep it consistent through the coverage. Daylight through a window, a warm practical and an LED panel can have different color temperatures even when they appear acceptable to the eye.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The manufacturer gallery’s example uses a 5600K white point and a tint value of 10. Those values describe that published setup only; they do not establish that 5600K is correct for every interview room. Use a different temperature or tint when the measured or visually evaluated light requires it.

Prevent mismatched interview angles

  • Set the same white-balance value on every camera covering the subject unless each camera is intentionally matched through a controlled color workflow.
  • Do not change white balance between questions simply to chase a moving patch of daylight. Stabilize the light or document the change if the room genuinely shifts.
  • Record the chosen temperature and tint in the camera report, along with the lighting arrangement and any changes during the day.

7. Choose a Blackmagic RAW compression mode

Blackmagic RAW provides two families of choices: constant bitrate and constant quality. The official options are:

Family Available choices Best understood as
Constant bitrate 3:1, 5:1, 8:1, 12:1 A selected compression ratio that makes storage planning more predictable than a quality target whose file size varies with scene complexity.
Constant quality Q0, Q1, Q3, Q5 A quality target that can allocate data according to image complexity, so the resulting file size is less fixed in advance.

Choose between them with three questions: how much image-quality latitude the grade needs, how much storage and backup capacity the production has, and whether the editing system can decode the chosen files comfortably. A complex interview background, fine hair detail or heavy reframing may justify a less compressed choice; a long run of locked-off interviews may make a more storage-efficient choice practical. The available labels do not by themselves state a card duration or bitrate for your exact mode, so calculate capacity from the camera’s current recording information and your own test.

Make the codec choice repeatable

  1. Set the resolution, frame rate and sensor mode first.
  2. Choose constant bitrate or constant quality according to the production’s storage and grading plan.
  3. Record a representative clip containing skin, hair, fabric, a bright window and a dark area.
  4. Copy and decode that clip on the intended edit system before the interview day.
  5. Write the selected BRAW option on the camera report and use it for matching coverage.

8. Configure audio for the actual microphone or mixer

The PYXIS 6K provides mini XLR and 3.5 mm stereo input connections. Its audio controls include mic/line selection, 48 V phantom-power control and gain. These settings must match the source connected to the socket.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microphone or mixer connection

  • Microphone level: Select mic when the connected microphone outputs microphone-level signal.
  • Line level: Select line when a mixer or other device is sending line-level output. Sending line level into a mic setting can overload the input; sending mic level into line can leave the recording too quiet.
  • Phantom power: Enable 48 V only when the connected microphone requires it and the wiring and device are designed for phantom power. Leave it off for sources that do not need it.
  • Gain: Set gain so normal speech has headroom for louder words. Do not judge levels only by the quietest sentence.
  • Monitoring: Listen on headphones while the subject and interviewer speak. Check for cable crackle, clothing noise, radio interference, hum and a channel that has been accidentally muted.

Make a spoken test at the subject’s real distance and volume. A technically correct mic/line selection cannot rescue a cable that is rubbing on clothing or a microphone placed too far from the mouth.

9. A manufacturer-published example—and how to use it correctly

Blackmagic Design’s gallery publishes a PYXIS 6K EF example with these settings:

Item Published example
Camera variant PYXIS 6K EF
Recording format Blackmagic RAW constant bitrate 5:1
Resolution and aspect 6K 16:9, 6048 × 3408
Frame rate 23.976 fps
ISO 400
Shutter 180°
White point 5600K
Tint 10
Listed look setup Blackmagic Gen 5 Film to Extended Video LUT
Listed filter NiSi C5 True Color VND, 1–5 stops

This is a real, manufacturer-published camera example, not a validated documentary-interview recipe. It uses the EF variant, so it should not be copied to an L-Mount or PL body without checking the lens and accessory compatibility. Its frame rate, lighting, subject, exposure goals and post workflow may differ from yours.

10. Save a testable setup before the subject arrives

  1. Identify the body: Record whether the camera is L-Mount, EF or PL and list the lens actually installed.
  2. Set delivery: Enter the project frame rate and confirm the selected resolution/codec supports it.
  3. Set the image mode: Choose open gate, 16:9 or another supported mode based on the final crop and edit plan.
  4. Set motion: Start at the chosen shutter angle, then test for subject blur and lighting flicker.
  5. Expose: Choose aperture, filtration, lighting and ISO together; inspect face and highlight detail.
  6. Balance color: Set temperature and tint for the actual key light and record the values.
  7. Choose BRAW: Select the compression family and option that the storage and post team have tested.
  8. Configure sound: Select mic or line, apply phantom power only when needed, set gain and monitor on headphones.
  9. Record a representative clip: Include a person speaking, the background, bright and dark areas, and several seconds of room tone.
  10. Check playback and copies: Confirm picture, sound, focus, sync and file readability before the interview starts.

Photograph or write down the camera display, lens, lighting changes, BRAW option and audio configuration. That record is more useful for continuity than a generic label such as “interview preset.”

Troubleshooting common interview failures

The image flickers

First confirm that the problem is lighting rather than a playback artifact. Test a different shutter setting appropriate to the project frame rate and the local power system, and check whether a particular LED or fluorescent fixture is the source. Do not solve flicker by changing ISO alone.

The face is noisy or the window is clipped

Reconsider the light ratio and exposure target before assuming the wrong native ISO was selected. Move or soften the light, reduce the window contribution, use filtration in a bright room or add controlled fill in a dark one. Then record another test at the chosen ISO.

Two angles do not match

Compare frame rate, sensor mode, shutter, ISO, white balance, tint, BRAW option and lens mount. A different white point or crop can be more visible than a small exposure difference. Recreate the settings from the camera report and test both cameras side by side.

The recording is too quiet or distorted

Check whether the source is mic or line level, whether phantom power is appropriate, and whether gain was changed after the test. Listen to the actual recorded file, not only the headphone feed, and inspect the cable and connector for intermittent noise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The edit system struggles with the files

Confirm the BRAW option, resolution and frame rate against the post system’s tested workflow. Generate the project’s intended proxies or transcodes only after preserving the camera originals and documenting the original settings. If the workload is still excessive, choose a more practical sensor mode or compression option for the next setup rather than changing clips mid-interview.

Quick decision checklist

  • Is the camera variant clearly identified as L-Mount, EF or PL?
  • Does the lens physically and electronically suit that mount?
  • Does the project frame rate match delivery, and is it supported at the selected resolution and codec?
  • Is open gate, 16:9, 4K, Super 35, Super 16 or HD the right balance of crop latitude and post capacity?
  • Has shutter been tested for motion and local-light flicker?
  • Was ISO chosen from the scene’s exposure and highlight priorities rather than as an automatic preset?
  • Is white balance set for the real light and recorded for continuity?
  • Has the BRAW constant-bitrate or constant-quality option been tested on the intended storage and edit system?
  • Are mic/line, phantom power, gain and headphone monitoring correct for the connected source?
  • Was a representative test clip played back and copied before the interview began?

The practical starting point

For a conventional documentary interview, begin with the delivery frame rate, a lens that matches the confirmed mount, a sensor mode that leaves the crop latitude you genuinely need, and a 180° shutter as a testable motion starting point. Set ISO, aperture, filtration and lighting to protect the subject’s face and important highlights. Balance white point to the room, select a BRAW option your post workflow has already handled, and verify audio at the camera input with headphones.

Then treat every number as a documented choice for that room—not as a permanent PYXIS 6K rule. Repeating this sequence is what makes interviews consistent when the subject, location, light or delivery requirement changes.
