Check NVENC in three stages: confirm the FFmpeg binary advertises an NVENC encoder, confirm an NVIDIA GPU is visible from the same environment, then complete a short test encode. Only the last step tests the encoder against that VPS’s current GPU, driver, permissions, and FFmpeg setup; a listed encoder alone does not prove the VPS can use it.
1. Check the FFmpeg binary used for streaming
Run this on the VPS:
ffmpeg -hide_banner -encoders | grep -E 'h264_nvenc|hevc_nvenc|av1_nvenc'
NVIDIA’s FFmpeg guide documents these encoder names: h264_nvenc for H.264, hevc_nvenc for HEVC, and av1_nvenc for AV1. If the command prints a name, that FFmpeg binary advertises the corresponding encoder implementation. It does not establish that the instance has a usable GPU.
To inspect an encoder that appears in the list, run:
ffmpeg -hide_banner -h encoder=h264_nvenc
Substitute another listed encoder name if needed. If the first command returns no output, check that you queried the same executable used by the livestream process. A VPS may have multiple FFmpeg installations, and a container or systemd service may use a different binary from your interactive shell.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Check GPU visibility in the same environment
Run:
nvidia-smi -L
NVIDIA’s guide uses this command to list available GPUs and device IDs. Run it inside the same container or execution environment as FFmpeg when applicable: a GPU visible to the host is not necessarily accessible to a workload container.
If the command is missing or fails, that result alone does not identify the cause. The VPS may not expose an NVIDIA GPU, the management utility may not be installed, or the driver/device setup may be unavailable. Check the instance details with the VPS provider and inspect GPU access in the environment where the stream will run.

3. Run a real, short NVENC encode
Use a local test file containing video and run:
ffmpeg -hide_banner -v error -i input.mp4 -t 10 -an -c:v h264_nvenc -f null -
Replace input.mp4 with the path to a file on the VPS. This test encodes up to 10 seconds of video without audio and discards the output. A successful exit shows that this FFmpeg binary initialized H.264 NVENC and completed this sample encode with the instance’s current setup.
If it fails, keep the full error output. Use it to identify which layer to investigate: the FFmpeg build or encoder initialization, GPU visibility, driver compatibility, permissions, or container passthrough. NVIDIA recommends testing a compiled FFmpeg binary to confirm that hardware acceleration works; a successful encoder listing is not a substitute for that test. See NVIDIA’s FFmpeg and GPU hardware acceleration guide.

What the three checks establish
| Check | What a positive result establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
ffmpeg -encoders |
The queried FFmpeg binary advertises the listed NVENC encoder. | That an NVIDIA GPU is present or accessible. |
nvidia-smi -L |
The command can list GPUs visible in the environment where it runs. | That FFmpeg can initialize NVENC or sustain the intended stream. |
| Short NVENC encode | The tested invocation can initialize the encoder and finish a short sample on that setup. | That it can encode continuously in real time at the target resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. |
For the result to apply to production, test the actual FFmpeg executable, container or service environment, GPU, and driver that the livestream will use. Output from a workstation, a different container, or another FFmpeg build is not proof about the production VPS.
Test the settings you will send to YouTube
A brief encode confirms initialization, not continuous capacity. Before relying on the VPS, run a longer test at your intended resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Use representative video motion and audio, monitor resource use and YouTube’s stream health, and verify that the VPS has stable outbound bandwidth for the chosen stream.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; recommends constant bitrate (CBR); supports up to 60 fps; and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum of four seconds. It specifies AAC or MP3 audio and recommends RTMPS. For H.264, its published bitrate examples are:
| Resolution and frame rate | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not measurements of your VPS’s available upload bandwidth. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before configuring a stream because its guidance may change.

H.264 is a practical first codec to test with h264_nvenc. HEVC or AV1 needs both a listed FFmpeg encoder and compatible underlying GPU support; an encoder name appearing in the list and that encoder initializing successfully are separate checks. Match the codec and settings to YouTube’s current guidance for your stream type rather than assuming every combination is interchangeable.
Troubleshoot common failures
- No NVENC encoder appears: Confirm the FFmpeg executable and version used by the streaming service, container, or systemd unit. The shell may be invoking a different build.
nvidia-smi -Lis unavailable or shows no GPU: Check whether the VPS instance exposes an NVIDIA GPU, whether the NVIDIA management utility and driver are available, and whether the command is running in the same environment as FFmpeg.- The encoder is listed but the test encode fails: Save the complete error and check GPU access, driver compatibility, device permissions, container passthrough, and encoder initialization for the exact FFmpeg process.
- The short test works but the live stream struggles: A short encode does not prove sustained real-time capacity. Test the target resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for longer; monitor resource use, outbound bandwidth, and YouTube stream health.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Compare the live encoder’s codec, CBR bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio format with YouTube’s current settings. Also check whether the VPS upload connection is stable.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuously live YouTube channel using uploaded recordings or a playlist, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative rather than an NVENC setup on your VPS. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The service loops uploaded videos, so no computer or home connection has to stay on; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. StreamNeo is YouTube-only and does not go live from a camera. The first day is free with no card.
