The reliable way to judge a conflict documentary is to check its consequential claims one by one. For each claim, identify the underlying evidence, trace that evidence to its earliest available source, test the date and location, seek genuinely independent corroboration, and examine what the editing, captions and narration leave out. Keep three questions separate: is the material genuine, is it from the claimed time and place, and does it show the event the film says it shows?
A documentary can use authentic video and still present a false conclusion if footage is misdated, mislocated, mistranslated or stripped of relevant context. Your final assessment should therefore be calibrated—specific about what is verified, what is disputed and what remains unknown—rather than a single yes-or-no verdict.
Start by defining what “accurate” means
Accuracy is not one property. A film may be correct about a photograph being real but wrong about when it was taken. An interviewee may accurately describe personal experience while making an unsupported claim about who ordered an attack. A narrator may quote a document faithfully yet omit a passage that changes its meaning.
Assess at least four layers:
- Authenticity: Is the image, video, audio recording or document genuine rather than fabricated?
- Attribution: Was it created at the claimed place, date and event?
- Interpretation: Does the narration draw a conclusion the evidence can support?
- Completeness: Does the edit disclose material uncertainty, contrary evidence and relevant interests?
Bellingcat’s conflict-verification guidance captures the central danger: “Treat all footage and claims with caution. Sometimes real footage can be attributed to false claims and vice versa.” Read the full guide at Bellingcat’s conflict verification guide.

Turn the film into a claim ledger
Do not try to verify a two-hour film as one object. Pause playback and write down each consequential factual assertion, especially claims that carry the film’s argument or accuse an identifiable person, institution or group.
Record the claim and its evidentiary basis
For every assertion, note the exact wording, the timecode, who says it and what material accompanies it. Classify the support as firsthand testimony, a document, an official statement, expert interpretation, archive footage, a social-media post or narrator inference. A narrator’s confident tone is not an additional source.
Separate observations from conclusions. “The building is burning” is an observation. “This proves a deliberate attack by Unit X” is an interpretation requiring a different level of evidence. Mark claims that depend on a chain of assumptions so you can test each link.
Prioritize the claims that matter most
Begin with statements that, if false, would change the film’s central conclusion. Then examine allegations of crimes, casualty figures, identification of perpetrators, claims about orders or intent, and statements presented as historical turning points. Minor errors in a date caption are not equivalent to a fabricated accusation, but repeated small errors can reveal weak editorial controls.

Trace footage, images and documents to their source
Provenance means knowing who created or first published material, when, where and on what basis. Start with the version shown in the film, then look for an earlier upload, original recording or primary document. Reposts can remove captions, crop frames and strip metadata, making context harder to recover.
Search distinctive clues
For video, capture several distinctive frames rather than relying on a single thumbnail. Search visible watermarks, usernames, unusual phrases in captions, signs, vehicle markings and recognizable landmarks. For photographs, use reverse-image search on the full image and on cropped details. Bellingcat’s beginner’s guide to social-media verification describes this process and the importance of finding earlier appearances.
When you find a candidate original, compare the documentary’s crop, color treatment, soundtrack and caption with the earlier version. Save the URL and access date because posts may be deleted or edited. A missing original does not prove that the film’s material is fabricated; it means the provenance is unresolved.

Ask who had direct access
Identify whether the source was an eyewitness, a local journalist, a military public-affairs office, an activist group, an intelligence service or an anonymous account. Access affects what a source could know, while incentives affect how it might frame events. A statement from a party to the conflict can be important evidence, but it should not automatically be treated as independent confirmation.
Test date, location and event as separate questions
Finding the right place is only one step. Verify three propositions independently:
- Is the material authentic?
- Was it recorded at the claimed location and time?
- Does it depict the event the documentary says it depicts?
Geolocate the scene
Compare buildings, road markings, utility poles, terrain, vegetation, language, storefronts, uniforms and equipment with maps, street-level imagery and independent photographs. Shadows and weather can provide additional clues, but they are rarely decisive on their own. A landmark may establish a city while leaving the exact street or date uncertain.
Chronolocate the material
Check upload history, weather, seasonal vegetation, construction changes, vehicle models, uniforms and visible technology against dated records. A platform timestamp may indicate when a file was posted, not when it was recorded. Metadata can be absent, rewritten during editing or stripped by social platforms, so treat it as supporting evidence rather than proof. The 2026 House of Commons Library briefing on image and video verification explains these limitations and cautions that visual artificial-intelligence detection is difficult.
Match the claimed incident
Look for independent accounts of the same explosion, protest, evacuation or attack at the stated time. Compare smoke direction, sounds, weather, damage patterns and the sequence of visible actions. A genuine clip from the correct city may still show a different incident months earlier. Bellingcat documents conflict examples in which authentic footage was assigned to the wrong location, event or date.

Demand independent corroboration
Several articles repeating the same press release or social-media post are one evidentiary chain, not several confirmations. Trace each report back to its source and ask whether the reporters had independent access to the facts.
Use different kinds of evidence
- Contemporaneous reporting from outlets with different ownership and source networks.
- Primary records such as court filings, satellite imagery, public registers, medical or morgue records, and official orders when legitimately available.
- Other photographs or videos showing the event from different angles.
- Statements from witnesses or affected communities whose accounts were gathered independently.
Assess each source’s opportunity to observe, expertise, incentives and correction history. Two partisan statements that agree may indicate a shared fact, coordinated messaging or mutual copying; agreement alone does not tell you which.

Look for disconfirming evidence
Search specifically for credible material that would undermine the film’s claim. A responsible investigation does not hide inconvenient evidence. If a location is alleged to be a particular city, look for evidence that the same skyline, road or weather occurred elsewhere. If a casualty number is presented, check how the count was defined, when it was last updated and whether missing people or duplicate reports could affect it.
Inspect editing, captions and translation
Documentaries are edited arguments. A sequence can imply chronology or causation even when shots were recorded days apart. Ask whether a cut changes the apparent order of events, whether reaction shots come from another interview, and whether music or narration supplies emotion that the underlying material does not establish.

Check captions and dates
Read every on-screen date, place name and speaker identification literally. Determine whether “archive” footage is labeled and whether the label distinguishes a reconstruction from original material. A caption such as “the city after the attack” may assert both a location and a causal connection that the image itself cannot establish.
Audit translations
When testimony is translated, compare the subtitles or voice-over with the original language where possible. Check whether a statement of uncertainty became a definite assertion, whether a military term was mistranslated, or whether a qualifier such as “allegedly” disappeared. Ask who translated the material and whether the documentary identifies that person or organization.
Notice omissions and framing
List relevant counterevidence, competing explanations and uncertainty that the film acknowledges, then note what it does not discuss. Omission is not automatically deception—time limits require selection—but an omitted fact is material when it would reasonably change a viewer’s understanding of responsibility, scale or confidence.

Check the expert’s role and incentives
Look up the person’s institutional position, relevant publications, funding or advocacy roles and whether the documentary discloses them. Distinguish an eyewitness account from a later analyst’s reconstruction. Experts can explain weapons, law, epidemiology or history, but they cannot personally verify facts outside their access.
Separate official claims from established facts
Governments, armed groups and international organizations may provide valuable records and testimony, yet each has interests and information limits. Attribute statements precisely—“the ministry said” is different from “investigators established.” Check whether the film reports subsequent retractions, corrections or independent inquiries.
Look for editorial fact-checking
Strong practice includes checking important factual assertions, accurately describing images, giving affected people a fair opportunity to respond and publishing corrections when errors are found. Bellingcat’s editorial standards describe the aim this way: “We seek to establish facts through objectively documented evidence, presented completely and in full context.” Treat that as a standard to apply to the film, not as proof that any particular documentary meets it.
Examine disclosures and accountability
Read the closing credits, production notes and the distributor’s corrections or standards pages. Check who financed the film, whether access was granted by a party to the conflict, whether producers received material assistance, and whether contributors faced safety or retaliation risks. A funding relationship does not automatically invalidate a film; undisclosed influence makes the viewer less able to evaluate it.
Look for a way to contact the production, a corrections policy, updated editions and responses to credible challenges. A film that dates its archive, identifies reconstructed scenes and explains unresolved disputes is showing accountable practice. Absence of a public correction policy is not proof of inaccuracy, but it limits your ability to see how errors are handled.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep an evidence record and reach a bounded conclusion
For each major claim, maintain four notes:
- The strongest supporting evidence and its original source.
- The strongest contrary evidence or alternative explanation.
- Dependencies between sources—for example, reports that all rely on one anonymous post.
- Questions that remain unanswered.
Use language that matches the evidence. “The footage is geolocated to this street, but its precise date is unverified” is stronger than either “the film is true” or “the clip is fake.” “The allegation is reported by two outlets that independently interviewed witnesses, while the casualty total remains provisional” tells the reader what has actually been established.
Record confidence separately for authenticity, attribution and interpretation. You may be highly confident that a video is original, moderately confident about its location and unable to determine who caused the event. New evidence can change any of those assessments, so preserve your links, screenshots, timecodes and reasoning.

Compare two conflict documentaries without reducing them to a score
If you are choosing between films, compare their methods rather than awarding points for production quality. Examine:
- Source independence: Do the films identify original sources and distinguish copied reporting from independent reporting?
- Footage provenance: Are dates, locations, archive labels and verification steps explained?
- Context and editing: Are translations, reconstructions, sequence and uncertainty made clear?
- Conflicting evidence: Do the films address credible contrary accounts and give affected people a fair chance to respond?
- Accountability: Are funding relationships, corrections and editorial standards disclosed?
These are evaluation dimensions, not a universal mathematical formula. A film can excel at documenting one episode while making an unsupported broader claim.
Protect yourself while verifying disturbing material
Conflict footage can be traumatic. Do not open graphic or unknown files merely to satisfy curiosity when a trusted newsroom has already published a careful verification. If you must inspect material, avoid downloading or sharing it unnecessarily, take breaks and consider whether you are prepared for what it contains.
Bellingcat says its researchers have therapeutic support available and suggests sharing material that needs attention with a trusted news organization rather than viewing and amplifying it yourself. Protect witnesses and victims by limiting identifying details, following platform rules and not reposting graphic images.
Know what verification tools cannot prove
No reverse-image search, geolocation clue, metadata field or artificial-intelligence detector establishes the whole truth. Search engines may miss older or private copies. Geolocation can be wrong when architecture is common. Metadata can be altered or removed. Visual AI detection remains difficult, especially after compression, cropping or re-encoding.
Use tools to generate leads, then confirm those leads with primary records, independent reporting and contextual analysis. A tool result should appear in your notes as one piece of evidence with its limitations, not as a verdict.
A concise viewing checklist
- Write down the film’s central factual claims and timecodes.
- Classify the evidence supporting each claim.
- Find the earliest available version of important footage, images and documents.
- Check authenticity, location, date and event separately.
- Trace repeated reporting back to its original source.
- Seek independent corroboration and actively search for disconfirming evidence.
- Review captions, translations, archive labels, edits and implied chronology.
- Check expert qualifications, official interests, financing and access arrangements.
- Look for corrections, responses, disclosed uncertainty and affected people’s perspectives.
- Write a claim-by-claim conclusion stating what is verified, disputed and unknown.
This method will not resolve every wartime claim. It will, however, prevent the most common mistake: treating compelling images or confident narration as proof without checking where the material came from, what it actually shows and what the edit has left outside the frame.
