Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUse FFprobe for a precise command-line check or VLC for a quick menu-based one. Inspect the video stream—not just the file extension—to find its codec and frame-rate fields. This preflight check helps you prepare a file, but it cannot confirm that a particular live encoder or looping setup will accept it.
What to check: container, codec and frame rate
A file such as video.mp4 has a container format and one or more media streams inside it. MP4 describes the container; H.264 or HEVC describes an encoded video format. The extension alone does not tell you which codec the video uses.
Check the video stream’s codec and frame-rate fields. If you also need audio details, inspect the audio stream separately. FFprobe supports selecting streams by media type and returning selected fields or full stream data (FFprobe documentation).
Check codec and frame rate with FFprobe
FFprobe is the most direct option when you want repeatable output for specific fields. Install FFmpeg, which includes FFprobe, if it is not already available, then run this command in a terminal:

ffprobe -v error -select_streams v:0 -show_entries stream=codec_name,r_frame_rate,avg_frame_rate -of default=noprint_wrappers=1 input.mp4
- Replace
input.mp4with the file’s actual path. If the path contains spaces, put it in quotation marks, for example"/path/to/my video.mp4". - Run the command. It selects the first video stream (
v:0) and requests the codec name plus two frame-rate fields. - Read the output values as reported; do not assume the two rate fields mean the same thing.
For a structured result, replace the final option with -of json. To see all streams and their fields—useful when a file has multiple video tracks—run:
ffprobe -v error -show_streams -of json input.mp4
Add -show_format if you also want container-level information. Container format and video codec are different properties, so report them separately.

Check it in VLC or MediaInfo
VLC
- Open the video file in VLC.
- Choose Tools > Codec Information.
- Look for the video codec and any frame-rate information shown.
Menu labels can vary by operating system or VLC version. VLC notes that it may not identify a codec in enough detail in some cases; its documentation points to MediaInfo for fuller specifications (VLC user documentation).
MediaInfo when you need more detail
If VLC’s display does not answer your question, inspect the file with MediaInfo. It can expose more detailed specifications. The available sources establish these tools’ functions, not a controlled comparison of how easy they are to use on every operating system.

Interpret the frame-rate output carefully
codec_nameis FFprobe’s machine-friendly codec identifier. Values may includeh264orhevc; the actual value depends on the file.r_frame_rateandavg_frame_rateare distinct reported fields. Preserve their rational form when noting them:30000/1001is approximately 29.97 fps, and rounding it to 30 can hide a meaningful difference.- If either value is
0/0,N/Aor blank, or if the two values differ, do not guess which is the one definitive rate. Check with a second tool such as MediaInfo. If the distinction matters, FFprobe can show per-frame information with-show_frames, though the output is much larger.
What YouTube’s upload guidance means for a loop-stream file
YouTube’s upload guidance recommends encoding and uploading at the frame rate at which the content was recorded. It lists 24, 25, 30, 48, 50 and 60 fps as common rates while allowing other rates. It also recommends deinterlacing interlaced content before upload; its example converts 1080i60 to 1080p30. These are upload recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular live encoder or loop-stream configuration will work (YouTube recommended upload encoding settings, accessed 2026).
For the upload settings described in that guidance, YouTube recommends MP4 as the container and H.264 as the video codec, along with progressive scan, High Profile, two consecutive B frames, closed GOP, CABAC, variable bitrate and 4:2:0 chroma subsampling. Its SDR bitrate recommendations for 1080p are 8 Mbps at standard frame rates (24/25/30 fps) and 12 Mbps at high frame rates (48/50/60 fps). For HDR at 1080p, the recommendations are 10 Mbps at standard rates and 15 Mbps at high rates. These are YouTube’s published upload recommendations, not independent performance measurements or live-stream guarantees.

Use the check as a preflight, not a compatibility guarantee
A file inspection tells you what the file’s streams report. It does not prove that your live encoder, input method, stream configuration or looping workflow will accept or transmit it correctly. If your setup reports an error, compare the file’s stream details with that setup’s requirements and test the actual workflow before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube loop stream, StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos running from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; your computer, OBS and home connection can be off. It streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
