Netflix does not normally offer a playback menu where you can force an exact resolution such as 720p, 1080p, or 4K. To influence streaming quality, change the profile’s Playback settings in a web browser. Use the Netflix app’s separate controls to manage cellular data or the quality of offline downloads. Netflix adjusts playback to the plan, title, device, display, and connection, so choosing High does not guarantee HD or 4K.
Change streaming quality in Netflix Playback settings
- Open Netflix in a web browser and sign in.
- Open the account menu and select Account.
- Under Profiles & Parental Controls, expand the profile you watch on.
- Find Playback settings and select Change.
- Under Data usage per screen, choose Auto, Low, Medium, or High, then select Save.
This setting belongs to the selected profile. If you watch on a different profile, change that profile too. Netflix’s data-usage guidance describes these options as preferences for data use and playback behavior—not fixed resolution switches.

If you are unsure, leave the setting on Auto. Choose High to allow the best quality your account and setup can deliver, not to force a resolution.

Change cellular-data use on Android, iPhone, or iPad
For streaming over a mobile network, use the app’s cellular control. A typical path is My Netflix → profile name or menu → App Settings → Video Playback → Cellular Data Usage. Choose the option that suits your plan, such as automatic, data-saving, or maximum-data use. Names and menu locations can vary by app version, operating system, country, and account configuration. Netflix’s cellular-data controls are separate from a profile’s general Playback settings.

Use the right control for the goal: change Cellular Data Usage to manage mobile-network use; change profile Playback settings to influence streaming behavior generally; change Download Video Quality for offline files. One setting does not substitute for the others.
Change the quality of Netflix downloads
In the Netflix app, open My Netflix, then the menu or profile settings, and go to App Settings → Downloads → Download Video Quality. Choose Standard to save space and download more quickly, or High for a larger file that may look better on a bigger screen. The exact labels or route can vary by app version and device.

This setting affects downloads, not live streaming. After changing it, delete an existing download and download the title again if you want the new preference to apply. High-quality files take more storage and may take longer to download; use Wi-Fi where practical and check available space. Netflix notes that download features and availability can depend on plan, device, and app version (download and playback help; download guidance).
What Netflix’s data settings can mean for usage
Netflix lists approximate maximum hourly figures for its settings. Actual use varies with the title, device, network, and playback conditions; these are estimates, not fixed consumption rates.

These are Netflix’s approximate figures in its data-usage information, not a promise that every stream will use that amount. If you are on a capped mobile or home plan, check your provider’s usage meter as well.
What you need for HD, 4K, or HDR
Selecting High cannot unlock a format excluded by your plan, a title, or your equipment. Availability also depends on the playback app or device, the display, and a stable connection. Netflix’s video-quality guidance and Ultra HD requirements provide the current compatibility details.

For 4K Ultra HD, check each link in the chain:
- Plan: Your account’s plan must include Ultra HD. Plan names and benefits vary by market and may change; check the Netflix plans page for your country rather than relying on a universal plan-to-resolution chart.
- Title: The specific movie or episode must be offered in Ultra HD; not all titles are. HDR also requires a title and setup that support the relevant HDR format.
- Connection: Netflix recommends a steady connection of at least 15 Mbps for Ultra HD. A speed test such as Fast.com is a useful snapshot, but it cannot rule out intermittent Wi-Fi congestion or other device issues.
- Playback device and app: The TV, streaming box, console, or other player and its Netflix app must support the format. Browser and DRM limits can also affect what plays.
- Display and output: The screen must support the desired resolution or HDR format, and the player’s output settings must be configured appropriately.
- HDMI chain: If an external player connects through a receiver, soundbar, switch, or cable, every part of that path must support the required 4K/HDR signal and HDCP protection. A weaker link can prevent the desired output.
- Playback preference: Keep Playback settings at Auto or High for the best available quality.

Why Netflix may still look blurry
Netflix uses adaptive streaming: picture quality can start lower and change as playback responds to connection conditions. A high setting is permission to use more data where possible, not a command to maintain the maximum resolution at all times. If the image stays soft, check these causes:

- Wrong profile or unsaved change: Confirm you changed the profile you are watching and selected Save. If the setting does not seem to take effect, sign out and back in.
- Plan or title limitation: Your plan may not include the target quality, or that particular title may not be available in HD, UHD, or HDR. Try another title to see whether the issue is title-specific.
- Device, app, browser, or DRM limitation: The device or playback route may not support the requested format. Update the Netflix app and the device’s operating system where possible.
- Android certification: Netflix requires Widevine L1 for HD on Android; a device reporting Widevine L3 may be limited to SD. Modified Android systems can also fall back to SD. In the app, check My Netflix → Menu → App Settings → Diagnostics → Playback Specification → Widevine. See Netflix’s Android playback specifications.
- Slow or unstable internet: Other household streams, weak Wi-Fi, interference, or congestion can make Netflix lower quality to avoid interruptions. A speed test is only one moment in time; test nearer the router or use a wired connection if available.
- VPN, proxy, or network management: These or other network conditions can interfere with delivery. Temporarily disable them for diagnosis if appropriate, then test again.
- Display or connection path: Check the TV or monitor’s resolution, player output settings, HDMI cable and ports, and any receiver or soundbar between the player and screen.
- Outdated software or device issue: Update the app and device, then restart the player and network equipment if needed.
A quick troubleshooting order
- Open Playback settings for the profile in use, select Auto or High, and save.
- Test a different title. If only one film or episode looks poor, the issue may be title-specific rather than a general setting.
- Check the plan, the title’s available format, and whether the device, app, and display support it.
- Check connection stability and household network use; remember that a speed-test result is a snapshot.
- For a TV setup, verify output resolution and the complete HDMI/HDCP path, including receivers and soundbars.
- Update and restart the Netflix app and playback device. If the setting still appears stale, sign out and in again.
- On Android, check Widevine playback specification if HD is unavailable.
- If playback remains blurry, pixelated, or distorted, follow Netflix’s video-quality troubleshooting and, for skipping or stuttering, its playback troubleshooting. Report a problem that consistently affects one title.
