To change what viewers see without ending a 24/7 YouTube live event, keep the encoder connected and switch the active video, scene, or playlist in the software sending the feed. In OBS, use a Media Source for a file or a VLC Video source for a playlist, then switch scenes or advance the playlist while the stream output remains live. YouTube documents how an encoder connects to a stream, but not a universal Studio control for swapping media across all encoder software; the exact controls depend on your setup.
Change the video in the encoder, not in YouTube Studio
A YouTube live event receives a feed from your encoder. YouTube’s encoder instructions tell you to enter the live server URL and stream key in that software so it can send the feed: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. To replace the content in that feed, use the playback or production controls of the encoder or playout software that is already sending it.
YouTube documents creating an encoder stream and ending a stream by stopping the encoder feed or using End Stream. Its help pages do not document a single YouTube Studio button that selects a different local video inside every third-party encoder. Keep the encoder connected; change its output content instead.
Switch videos in OBS while the stream stays live
Prepare a video source or playlist
- In OBS, add a Media Source and select the video file you want to play. OBS documents looping and restart-on-activation controls for Media Sources. Check those options if the source needs to repeat or restart when activated.
- For a playlist, add a VLC Video source and add the media files to its playlist. Enable Loop Playlist if you want the list to repeat. VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to appear in OBS.

Make the handoff
- If you want to control the transition between videos, put each video in its own scene, or arrange the relevant sources in a scene. A scene is an output layout made from sources such as media and devices.
- Preview the intended scene or playlist state. Check that the expected picture and audio are present before making the change live.
- Switch to the intended scene or advance the VLC playlist in OBS. Leave the stream output running. Based on YouTube’s encoder-connection model and OBS’s media features, changing the content in OBS changes what it sends to YouTube; this is not a platform-guaranteed procedure for every encoder configuration.
- After the switch, verify the live preview and listen for the expected audio. Do not reset or change the stream key for a routine media swap. YouTube documents resetting a key for cases such as a compromised key: Manage your live stream settings.
What to check on a 24/7 broadcast
Do not rely on YouTube’s archive as your only recording
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A 24-hour stream exceeds that threshold, so keep a local recording if you need a backup. See Archive live streams.
Viewer DVR may not cover the full stream
YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable for live streams longer than 12 hours. Viewers may therefore be unable to rewind through the entire continuous broadcast. Details are in Use DVR on live streams.

Monitor the output after each switch
A scene change can affect picture or sound depending on how sources are arranged. Check the encoder preview and the live output after switching, and monitor audio and video as YouTube recommends in its live streaming tips.
Troubleshooting a video change
- The old video is still showing: Confirm that you switched to the intended OBS scene or advanced the active playlist, rather than only selecting a source in the editor.
- The VLC Video source is missing: Install VLC; OBS requires it for that source type to appear.
- The new picture appears but its audio does not: Check the source’s audio and OBS’s output meters, then verify the live output after correcting the source setup.
- The stream ended or disconnected: Check whether the encoder is still sending its feed and whether its connection remains active. A media switch is different from ending the event; do not use End Stream for a content change.
- Your menus do not match these steps: OBS controls vary with version and configuration, and other encoders use different controls. Identify whether the current input is a local file, playlist, browser source, capture feed, or cloud playout source, then consult that encoder’s instructions.
