Short answer: Windows Media Player Legacy has a documented Play speed settings control, but it does not provide a standard user-facing control for changing musical pitch independently. Speed changes may or may not alter pitch, depending on the file and playback mode. To raise or lower a song while keeping its duration, use a dedicated pitch-shifting player or editor.
Pitch, speed, key and tempo are different controls
Before changing anything, identify the result you want:

Microsoft defines WMP’s rate as a playback-speed multiplier: 1.0 is the authored, normal speed. Its documentation describes playback modes that can maintain audio pitch or leave it unmaintained, rather than documenting a separate pitch-shift setting. See Microsoft’s rate documentation.
First, check which Windows media app you have
Windows Media Player Legacy
The older desktop player uses the Enhancements menu and is the version covered by the speed-control steps below. Microsoft lists Windows Media Player Legacy as an optional feature on some Windows 10 and Windows 11 editions.

The newer Media Player app
Windows 11 also includes a newer app simply called Media Player. It does not necessarily contain Legacy’s Enhancements or Play speed settings menus. Tutorials written for the old player therefore may not match what you see.
Install or enable Legacy if it is available
Microsoft’s current support instructions give these paths, although labels can vary by edition, language and Windows build:
- Windows 11: Start > Settings > System > Optional Features > View features. Search for Windows Media Player Legacy, select it, choose Next, then Add.
- Windows 10: Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features > Manage optional features > Add a feature > Windows Media Player.
Refer to Microsoft’s Windows Media Player troubleshooting page for edition-specific availability. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, but the Legacy feature path itself is separate from the pitch question.

These instructions apply to the Legacy interface. The menu route comes from a Microsoft Q&A answer dated November 9, 2017, so wording can differ in later builds.

- Open Windows Media Player Legacy and load the audio or video file.
- Switch to Now Playing view.
- Right-click an unused area of the Now Playing window, away from the transport buttons.
- Choose Enhancements, then Play speed settings.
- Move the speed slider or choose a displayed preset.
- If your build shows Snap slider to common speeds, clear it for finer adjustments.
- When finished, return the control to 1.0 or Normal.
Some versions show only preset slow, normal and fast choices; others expose a more continuous slider. Microsoft’s API example uses a range of 0.5× to 2.0×, but supported values and behavior depend on the media and player version. The Q&A procedure is documented at Microsoft Q&A.
What happens to pitch when you change speed?
There is no universal result. Microsoft says Windows Media Player attempts to select among modes including smooth video with audio pitch maintained, smooth video with pitch not maintained, smooth video without audio, and keyframe video playback without audio. The choice can depend on file type, location, operating system, network and server.
- A supported local file may slow down while speech remains approximately natural.
- Another file may sound lower when slowed or higher when sped up.
- Video and audio-only files can behave differently.
- Streaming, protected media and some formats may restrict rate changes.
- Microsoft warns that audio can become difficult to understand below 0.5× or above 1.5×, even though broader values may be accepted for some media.
Thus, a speed change is not a reliable way to select a musical key. If pitch stays fixed, that is expected behavior; if pitch moves with speed, that is also an outcome Microsoft documents.

Not through a documented, standard Windows Media Player Legacy control. WMP’s documented user-facing setting is playback rate. Microsoft does describe low-level Windows audio APIs that distinguish pitch from playback-rate changes, but those are developer interfaces, not a command or menu option you can apply inside WMP. The legacy waveform-audio feature is superseded by newer audio technologies, and hardware support for pitch changes is not universal; see Microsoft’s pitch and playback-rate API guidance.

For a fixed-duration result, choose software that offers pitch in semitones, fine adjustment in cents, preserve tempo or time-stretching, preview and export. A codec pack will not normally add those controls; codecs address decoding and compatibility.
If you only want a voice to sound higher or lower
Quick but imperfect approach
Use Enhancements > Play speed settings and test a modest change. A faster rate may sound higher and a slower rate lower when pitch is not being maintained, but duration changes and artifacts are possible.
Correct approach for unchanged timing
Use a dedicated pitch-shifting player, audio editor or video editor. Select the desired semitone or cent change, enable tempo preservation if offered, preview it, and export only if you need a new file. For online video, a browser tool or extension may fit better, but check its permissions, privacy policy, upload requirements and supported websites.
Why the control is missing or sounds wrong
The Enhancements menu is missing
- Confirm that the app is Windows Media Player Legacy, not the newer Media Player.
- Switch to Now Playing view.
- Right-click empty space in the player window.
- Install Legacy through Optional Features if your edition offers it.
- If the menu still does not appear, use a player or editor with explicit pitch controls.
The file will not play
Resolve playback compatibility first. Microsoft identifies codecs and unsupported formats as common causes of WMP errors; its troubleshooting guidance is at this support page. Installing a codec may make a file playable, but it does not create independent pitch shifting.

The sound becomes robotic
Return to 1.0×, reduce the speed change, try a local copy instead of a stream, or move to software designed for time-stretching and pitch shifting.
One file behaves differently from another
That can result from format support, streaming or protection, server conditions, or WMP selecting a different playback mode. Some digital media formats cannot have their playback rate changed at all.

FAQ
Can Windows Media Player change pitch?
It has no documented standard consumer control for independent pitch shifting. It can change playback rate in Legacy, and that may or may not move pitch.

Can I set an exact semitone?
Not in the documented WMP Legacy interface. Use a tool that exposes semitone or cent controls.
Can I save the pitch-shifted result from WMP?
No. WMP’s speed setting is for playback; use an editor or converter to create an exported file.
Does this work in the new Windows 11 Media Player app?
The Enhancements path is for Windows Media Player Legacy and should not be assumed to exist in the newer Media Player app.
