Want to change Netflix’s menus, a show’s spoken language, or its subtitles? Those are separate controls. Display Language changes the Netflix interface; Audio & Subtitles changes playback for one title; and profile language preferences set the languages Netflix should prefer across supported devices.
Language choices are limited by the title, country or region, profile, device, licensing, and— for downloads—the options Netflix presents. Use the steps below to change the right setting.
Which Netflix language setting do you need?
- Menu language: Changes interface text and profile-level display elements.
- Default audio: Tells Netflix which spoken-language track to prefer when available.
- Default subtitles: Sets a preferred subtitle or caption language.
- Per-title language: Changes audio or subtitles only for the show or movie currently playing.
- Audio description: Adds narration describing visual action, settings, facial expressions and scene changes.
- SDH/CC: Subtitles or captions that can include speaker identification, music and other sound cues.
Changing a preference cannot create a dub or subtitle track that Netflix does not offer for that title.
Change Netflix’s menu language
Smart TV or TV streaming device
- Open Netflix and go to the profile-selection screen.
- Select the profile’s pencil-shaped Edit icon.
- Choose Language.
- Select the language and choose Done. Netflix saves the setting before you select Done.

Android, iPhone or iPad
- Open Netflix and tap My Netflix in the lower-right corner.
- Tap the profile name at the top, then Manage Profiles.
- Select the profile and tap Display Language.
- Choose a language. Netflix says the choice is saved automatically.
Web browser
- Open Netflix’s Account page.
- Select Profiles, then choose the profile.
- Select Languages and choose Display Language.
- Select Save.
If the interface does not update, Netflix says to sign out and sign back in.
Set default audio and subtitle languages
In a browser
- Open the Netflix Account page.
- Go to Profiles and select the profile.
- Choose Languages.
- Under Audio and subtitle languages, select your preferences and choose Save.
On Android, iPhone or iPad
- Tap My Netflix, then the profile name.
- Tap Manage Profiles and select the profile.
- Tap Audio & Subtitles.
- Select the desired languages. Netflix says the preferences save automatically.
Profile preferences are defaults, not a guarantee that every title will use or offer those languages. See Netflix’s current instructions at help.netflix.com/en/node/13245.
Change language while watching one show or movie
- Start playing the title.
- Open the playback controls. Tap or click the screen on a phone, tablet or computer; press an up or down arrow on many TVs, streaming players, cable boxes, Blu-ray players and consoles; or swipe up or press the up arrow on Apple TV.
- Select Audio & Subtitles. Some devices show Other, or place the choices along the bottom of the screen.
- Choose an available audio track, subtitle language, caption option or accessibility track, then resume playback.
Netflix’s player guidance is at help.netflix.com/en/node/372. On April 2, 2025, Netflix announced that its TV language picker could show the full list of languages available for that title, rather than only a smaller initial selection: Netflix announcement. “Full list” means the tracks available for that title in that TV/device context, not every language worldwide.
Subtitles, SDH/CC and audio description
Turn subtitles or captions on or off
Use Audio & Subtitles during playback. Ordinary subtitles generally translate or transcribe dialogue. SDH/CC can also identify speakers and describe music or other sounds. Netflix may show an SDH badge on a title’s details page, and availability can differ by season or episode.

Turn audio description on or off
- Start the title and open Audio & Subtitles.
- Select a track labeled Audio Description to enable narration.
- Select an ordinary audio track without that label to turn it off.
Netflix defines audio description as narration of visual events such as actions, expressions, costumes, settings and scene changes. Details: Netflix Help Center.
Why a language is missing
Netflix says language availability depends on:
- your location or country;
- the profile’s language preferences;
- the individual movie or show;
- the playback device; and
- content-licensing or show-agreement restrictions.
Different seasons or episodes can also have different tracks. Netflix says seasons may come from different sources, older seasons offered before 2018 may have fewer options, and rolling-release titles can receive language tracks after episodes are completed. Downloads show fewer choices
For downloaded titles, Netflix says it displays the two most relevant languages. To check the broader streaming selection:
- Delete the download.
- Connect to Wi-Fi if appropriate.
- Stream the title again.
- Open Audio & Subtitles and review the choices.
Device compatibility
Netflix says devices made before 2014 may not support some subtitle languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Romanian and Vietnamese. 2014 is a general guide, not a hard cutoff; some newer devices can also lack support.

When profile language changes what you see
In some countries, Netflix says a profile language can affect catalog discovery. If the profile language matches the language Netflix lists for that country, the profile may show only titles with audio or subtitles in that language. For the United States, Netflix lists English in this context. To see the full catalog available in your region, Netflix says to choose a different profile language. Browse by language
Netflix’s web language pages include titles by subtitle language and titles by audio language. Netflix also lists searches such as “Hindi Dubbed Movies & TV,” “Portuguese Dubbed Movies & TV,” “Spanish movies” and “French TV shows.” Presentation varies by device. Fix Netflix reverting to the wrong language
- Confirm you edited the correct profile.
- Check whether you changed Display Language or Audio & Subtitles; they control different things.
- In a browser, select Save.
- Sign out and back in if the display language has not updated.
- Fully close and reopen the app, then test another device to identify a device-specific problem.
- For audio, set the profile preference, play a title with the desired track and select it from Audio & Subtitles.
Kids profiles require special attention. Netflix says preferences are not saved when most Kids titles are watched from an adult profile, but are saved when viewing from a Kids profile. If audio keeps resetting, Netflix recommends playing a title rated Teens or above for two to three minutes so the preference can save. Sources: playback guidance and audio-description guidance.
If one device has fewer languages
Compare the web player, the current Netflix app on your TV or streaming device, and a current phone or tablet app. Device support and the controls Netflix exposes can differ. Testing another device can show whether the limitation belongs to the title or the original hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change Netflix’s language for only one show?
Yes. Start the show, open Audio & Subtitles, and choose the track you want. The change applies to that playback rather than changing the profile default.
Why does my TV show fewer languages than my phone?
Device support and Netflix’s player controls differ. Compare the title in the web player and a current mobile app; older hardware may not support some subtitle languages.
Why are subtitles available for one season but not another?
Netflix says seasons can come from different sources, and older or still-releasing seasons may have different language availability.

Why does a downloaded movie have fewer language options?
Netflix says downloads show the two most relevant languages. Delete the download and stream the title again to check the broader selection.
How do I watch a foreign-language show with English subtitles?
Play the title, open Audio & Subtitles, select the original-language audio track, and choose English subtitles if that track is offered.
Can I browse Netflix by audio or subtitle language?
Yes. Use Netflix’s web pages at https://www.netflix.com/browse/audio and https://www.netflix.com/browse/subtitles, although presentation can vary by device.
Does changing the language change my Netflix country or plan?
