Change Netflix back to English on a TV or streaming device
This procedure applies broadly to smart TVs, streaming players, game consoles, set-top boxes, Blu-ray players, and similar devices. The exact icons and labels can vary by device and Netflix app version.
- Open the Netflix app.
- Return to the profile-selection screen. If something is playing, exit playback first.
- Highlight the profile with the language problem.
- Select the profile’s Edit icon.
- Select Language.
- Choose English.
- Select Done.
Netflix normally saves the new display language automatically on this device flow. Make sure you edit the profile you actually use: language preferences belong to the individual Netflix profile, not necessarily every profile on the account.

Change Netflix back to English on an Android phone, iPhone, or iPad
- Open Netflix.
- Tap My Netflix in the lower-right corner.
- Tap the profile name at the top of the screen.
- Tap Manage Profiles.
- Select the profile you want to change.
- Tap Display Language.
- Select English.
The change should save automatically. If the app does not update immediately, close and reopen Netflix before trying the troubleshooting steps below.
Change Netflix back to English in a web browser
- Open your Netflix Account page.
- Open Profiles.
- Select the affected profile.
- Open Languages.
- Under Display Language, choose English.
- Select Save.
If a connected TV or other device still shows the previous language, sign out of Netflix on that device and sign back in. This forces the app to retrieve the updated profile setting.
If only the movie or show is in another language
Changing the profile’s display language changes Netflix’s interface, but it does not automatically change the spoken language or subtitles for every title. Those options are controlled during playback and vary by title.
- Start playing the movie or show.
- Open the playback controls. Tap or click the screen on a phone, tablet, or computer. On many TVs, streaming players, game systems, cable boxes, and Blu-ray players, press the up or down arrow on the remote.
- Select Audio & Subtitles. On some TVs, the language choices appear along the bottom of the screen without the usual menu icon.
- Under Audio, select English if it is available.
- Under Subtitles, select English, English [CC], another available English option, or the option to turn subtitles off.
- Close the menu or apply the selection and continue watching.
English [CC] is intended for closed-captioning and may include descriptions of sounds or speaker information. Choose the regular English subtitle option when you want translated dialogue without those additional captions, if both options are offered.

Why English may not appear as an audio or subtitle option
Changing Netflix’s language preference cannot create a track that is unavailable for a particular title. Netflix says available languages can depend on:
- your location or country;
- the profile’s language preferences;
- the specific movie or show;
- the season or episode;
- the device you are using; and
- content licensing and other show agreements.
As a result, English audio may be available for one season or episode but not another, or on one device but not another. If English is missing from one title, test another title before assuming that the profile setting failed.
Downloaded Netflix titles can show fewer languages
Netflix may display only the two most relevant audio or subtitle languages for a downloaded title. If English is unavailable in a download but appears to be available when the title is streamed, delete the download and check the language menu while connected to the internet. Then download the title again if the desired English track is offered.
What to do if Netflix will not use English
Sign out and sign in again
If you changed the language in a browser but the TV, streaming player, or phone still uses the old language, sign out of Netflix on that device and sign back in. Also confirm that you edited the correct profile.

Update the Netflix app
An outdated Netflix app can cause language or compatibility problems. Install any available Netflix app updates through the device’s app store or system software menu, then reopen Netflix and check the profile language again.
Try another supported device
Some older devices may not support Netflix in every preferred language. Netflix recommends using the app in English where possible or trying Netflix on another device. This is a compatibility limitation, not an indication that you need a new remote, HDMI cable, or other accessory for the ordinary language-setting procedure.
Separate an interface problem from a title problem
Use this quick diagnosis:
| What changed? | Correct setting |
|---|---|
| Menus, buttons, or profile screens | Profile Display Language |
| Spoken dialogue in the current title | Playback Audio & Subtitles > Audio |
| Text shown during the current title | Playback Audio & Subtitles > Subtitles |
If the menus are already in English, changing the profile display language again will not solve missing English dialogue or subtitles. Check the title’s playback menu and remember that availability is not identical for every title, episode, region, device, or download.
Frequently asked questions
Will changing Netflix’s display language change the audio for every movie?
No. Display Language controls the Netflix interface. Audio and subtitles must be selected during playback, and English must be available for that particular title and device.

Why did changing the language affect only one Netflix profile?
Netflix stores language preferences with profiles. Edit each profile separately if more than one person needs English menus.
Why is English available when streaming but not on my download?
Downloads may show only the two most relevant language options. Delete the download, connect to the internet, check the title’s language menu, and download it again if English is offered.
Do I need to buy a new remote or streaming stick?
Usually not. The normal fix is a Netflix profile or playback setting. Consider another device only if the current older device or outdated app does not support the preferred language.

The Bottom Line
For foreign-language Netflix menus, edit the correct profile and set Display Language to English. For foreign audio or subtitles, start the title and use Audio & Subtitles. If English is absent there, the limitation is likely specific to the title, episode, location, device, licensing, or download.
