Celebrate Three Kings Day, or Día de Reyes, on January 6 by extending Christmas with a family meal, a small gift, and a shared story or activity about the Magi. January 5 often brings the anticipation—parades, church events, or preparations—while January 6 is the feast and family-sharing day. Customs differ by country, denomination, and household, so use the ideas that fit your family.
What Three Kings Day means
Three Kings Day is the January 6 Epiphany feast in Western Christian tradition. It recalls the Magi visiting Jesus and offering gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The Vatican’s Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy describes the exchange of “Epiphany gifts” as deriving from those offerings.
Keeping the nativity scene visible makes the season’s timeline tangible. In a 2019 letter, Pope Francis wrote, “As the feast of Epiphany approaches, we place the statues of the Three Kings in the Christmas crèche.” Some Eastern Christian communities emphasize Theophany and baptism instead, so a Western-style Reyes celebration should not be presented as universal.
A simple home celebration
1. Keep Christmas visible until January 6
Leave the nativity scene and other Christmas decorations up through Epiphany. Place the Magi figures at a distance at first, then move them closer to the manger over several days and put them at the scene on January 6. This gradual journey gives children something to notice each day.

2. Give children a job
Invite children to draw or write a note for the Kings, make paper crowns, or create a star decoration. These projects turn the story into a shared activity rather than another present-opening occasion.
3. Exchange one thoughtful gift
Offer one modest gift per child, or choose a book or game for everyone. Explain that the gesture echoes the Magi’s offerings and closes the Christmas season with generosity rather than excess. A family can also choose an act of service or a donation in someone’s name.

4. Share Rosca de Reyes
Rosca de Reyes is a sweet, ring-shaped bread decorated with fruit and nuts. Mexico’s Secretaría de Cultura describes families and friends gathering around it on January 6; Mexico’s agriculture ministry says the custom arrived in Mexico in the sixteenth century and is traditionally shared on that date. Buy one from a bakery or make it at home, then serve it as the centerpiece of the meal.
5. Add a story, song, or short service
Read a child-friendly account of the Magi, sing a familiar Christmas song one last time, or ask each person to name a generous act they noticed during the season. The activity can be explicitly religious or simply focus on welcome, journey, and giving.

Regional customs to understand
Mexico
Rosca de Reyes is the defining shared food: a crown- or ring-shaped sweet bread with colorful fruit and nuts. Government descriptions center on a communal January 6 gathering rather than an individual ritual, so serving the bread is an easy way to make the day feel collective.
Puerto Rico
Three Kings Day is a cherished January 6 tradition, with activity beginning on January 5. Families may combine home customs with town events, music, or church observance.
U.S. Hispanic Catholic communities
Parishes may organize Mass, a procession or gathering, food, and children’s gifts. Check the parish or community center’s current calendar because schedules and formats vary by location.
Other Christian households
Vatican sources document Epiphany gifts and placing Magi figures in the nativity. Families can observe those practices religiously, adapt them as a cultural tradition, or create a secular “final day of Christmas” focused on generosity.
