The best way to watch a computer movie on your TV depends on where the movie is playing and what your devices support. Use HDMI for the most reliable picture and sound; Google Cast for Chrome content; AirPlay for a Mac and compatible TV or Apple TV; and Miracast for a Windows PC and compatible wireless display. For a regular library of local files, a TV app or media server may work better than mirroring.

“Casting” can mean several different things: sending a browser tab, handing playback from an app to a TV, duplicating the whole screen, or playing a file directly in a TV app. These methods are not interchangeable. A TV with Google Cast, for example, is not necessarily a Miracast receiver, and an Apple TV will not normally appear in Chrome’s Google Cast device list.
Before you start
- Identify the receiver: Check the TV’s specifications or settings for Google Cast, AirPlay, or Miracast. A streaming box or stick may supply a protocol the TV lacks. Do not assume that every smart TV supports every type of casting.
- Check the computer: For a cable, confirm that it has HDMI or a USB-C/Thunderbolt port that supports video output. USB-C alone does not guarantee video. Wireless options depend on the computer’s hardware, software, and drivers.
- For wireless casting: The computer and receiver usually need to be on the same discoverable home network. Guest networks and networks with device isolation often prevent discovery.
- For protected streaming: Use the service’s supported TV app or playback method. A service may allow its own Cast or AirPlay button while blocking screen mirroring.
Method 1: Connect with HDMI
HDMI is the simplest fallback when wireless casting is unavailable or unreliable. It is usually a strong choice for local files, high-bitrate video, synchronized sound, and services that block mirroring.

If the computer has USB-C or Thunderbolt instead, use an adapter or dock that supports video output and the resolution you need.
- Use the TV remote to select the matching HDMI input.
- On the computer, choose whether to duplicate the display, extend the desktop, or use the TV as the only display. The display controls are in the operating system’s display settings.
- Start the movie. If sound still comes from the computer, select the TV or HDMI device as the audio output in the computer’s sound settings.
If you get sound but no picture, or a streaming service displays a black screen, check the adapter, dock, cable, TV input, and HDCP compatibility. For 4K HDR, every part of the chain—including the computer, adapter, cable, TV input, and playback service—must support the desired mode. If the picture is fine but the sound is not, check the selected audio output, TV volume, mute setting, and soundbar input.

Method 2: Cast from Chrome with Google Cast
Chrome’s casting feature works on Windows, Mac, ChromeOS, and Linux, provided the computer and receiver support it and the system is capable enough for smooth playback. You need a Chromecast, Google TV Streamer, or TV with Google Cast. Keep the computer and receiver on the same Wi-Fi network. Google lists supported computer platforms and performance requirements.
Cast a movie website
- Open the movie site in Chrome and start playback.
- If the player has its own Cast button, try it first. On supported sites, this can hand playback to the receiver instead of mirroring the browser. The button’s location varies, and some services require their TV app. See Google’s overview of Cast-enabled apps and websites.
- If there is no usable Cast button, open Chrome’s menu and select Cast, save, and share → Cast….
- Choose the receiver. If Chrome offers a source choice, select the current tab to cast the movie page rather than the whole desktop.
- To finish, select the Cast icon near the address bar and choose Stop casting.
Tab casting is generally the better first try for a movie already playing in a browser: Google says tab audio plays on the TV. Other tabs and applications are not part of that tab’s sound stream. If a site blocks mirroring or behaves unexpectedly, try its own Cast button or official TV app.
Cast a local movie file from Chrome
- Open a new Chrome tab, then drag the movie file into it. Alternatively, use Ctrl + O on Windows or Command + O on Mac and open the file.
- With the file playing in Chrome, select More → Cast, save, and share → Cast…, then choose the receiver.
- Stop casting from the Cast icon when you are finished.
Google documents Chrome tab, desktop, and local-file casting. Local-file results can vary: the receiver may not support the file’s video or audio codec, subtitle tracks, multiple audio tracks, or bitrate. A file that plays in a dedicated player may not work correctly in Chrome; Google notes that some content, including VLC-related content, is unsupported for Chrome casting. If the file stutters, loses subtitles, or has no sound, use HDMI, a compatible TV app, or a media server instead.

Cast the whole desktop
- In Chrome, select More → Cast, save, and share → Cast….
- Select Sources, then choose the screen or desktop-casting option shown in your Chrome version.
- Choose the receiver. Stop the session from Chrome’s Cast controls.
Desktop casting is useful for a movie in a non-browser application or when you need to show more than one window. It is less ideal when sound routing matters: Google warns that desktop audio may remain on the computer. It also duplicates notifications and other visible activity, so close private windows and silence notifications first. Tab casting is usually preferable for a browser movie.
Method 3: AirPlay from a Mac
Use AirPlay with an Apple TV or an AirPlay-compatible TV. The receiver does not need to be a Google Cast device; these are different systems. In a normal setup, the Mac and receiver should be on the same network.
- For a player with an AirPlay button: Select the button in the video player and choose the TV or Apple TV. This streams the video through the player’s AirPlay workflow.
- To mirror the Mac screen: Open Control Center or the Screen Mirroring control in the menu bar, choose the receiver, and follow any on-screen prompts. Use the same control to disconnect.
Apple documents AirPlay for viewing a Mac’s screen and streaming audio or video to Apple TV 4K, with network requirements that can apply to the setup. See Apple’s AirPlay guidance and its list of AirPlay-compatible receiving devices. Not every service permits screen mirroring, even if a TV supports AirPlay. If the receiver does not appear, check network discovery, local-network permissions, VPN routing, and firewall settings. AirPlay is not a universal native casting option for Windows PCs.

Method 4: Use Windows wireless display (Miracast)
Windows wireless display projection uses Miracast, not Google Cast. Both the PC and the TV or wireless display adapter must support Miracast; a TV that supports Chromecast or AirPlay may not support it.

- On Windows, press Windows key + K to open the wireless-display or Connect control.
- Select the TV or wireless display and accept the connection on the TV if prompted.
- Choose duplicate or extend in Windows display settings if needed. Disconnect using the wireless-display control.
Whether the display appears depends on the computer’s wireless hardware, graphics drivers, Windows version, and receiver. If it does not show up, confirm Miracast support rather than assuming that any smart TV can receive a projection. HDMI is the straightforward fallback.
Roku, smart TVs, and direct playback
A streaming device may be useful even when it cannot receive the kind of computer casting you want. Roku devices, for example, run TV apps, and Roku’s Streaming Stick 4K product page lists Apple AirPlay support. That does not mean every Roku model or app works as a universal Google Cast receiver. Check the exact device and feature you need before buying anything; your TV may already have the right receiver protocol or an official movie app.

For a streaming service, playing the movie in the TV’s own app is often better than mirroring. For a larger personal movie library, a media-server setup can let a TV or streaming device browse and play files directly. It takes setup and may need to transcode files the TV cannot decode. For a one-time movie, HDMI is usually less work.

The TV or receiver does not appear
- Make sure the receiver is powered on, awake, and ready to receive a connection.
- For Google Cast or AirPlay, check that both devices use the same home network. Avoid guest Wi-Fi or networks that isolate devices.
- Temporarily test without a VPN, then check firewall or antivirus rules that might block local discovery.
- Restart Chrome, the computer, the TV, and any streaming device; update Chrome and receiver software.
- On macOS 15 or later, confirm Chrome has local-network permission for Google Cast discovery.
- If you are using Windows projection, verify Miracast support on both ends. If using HDMI, check the selected TV input and cable or adapter.
Google’s missing-device troubleshooting identifies network mismatch, firewall software, and macOS permissions among the possible causes.
The computer plays the movie, but the TV shows nothing or a black screen
This can indicate an unsupported codec or container, a content-protection restriction, or an incompatible casting method—not necessarily a faulty TV. Try the site’s own Cast or AirPlay button, then the official TV app. For a local file, try HDMI or a media server that can handle the TV’s format requirements. For a protected service, use its supported playback route and a compliant HDMI path if needed; do not try to bypass DRM.

There is no sound
- With Google Cast tab casting, the tab’s sound should play on the TV. With desktop casting, audio may stay on the computer.
- For HDMI, select the TV or HDMI device as the computer’s audio output.
- For AirPlay, try the player’s AirPlay control rather than mirroring the whole screen.
- Check volume, mute, receiver settings, soundbar input, and audio-format compatibility.
The movie stutters or looks poor
For wireless playback, improve the Wi-Fi signal by moving the computer, receiver, or router; use 5 GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet where available; and pause heavy downloads or uploads. Try tab casting or direct playback instead of mirroring the whole desktop, and lower the stream quality temporarily. The internet connection affects an online stream; the home network affects the link between the computer and receiver. For a high-bitrate local file, HDMI or a media server that can transcode to the TV’s capabilities is often more dependable.
Subtitles are missing, or the image is stretched
Subtitle tracks do not always carry over when a local file is cast from Chrome. Try a TV app or media server that can select the subtitle track, or use HDMI and play the file in a compatible computer application. If the picture is stretched or has bars, check the computer’s display resolution and scaling, the TV’s picture-size setting, and whether you are duplicating or extending the display.
Privacy and playback rights
Desktop mirroring can expose notifications, open tabs, and other windows to anyone watching the TV. Close unrelated material and silence notifications before connecting. Use a service’s official app or supported Cast or AirPlay controls for protected movies. A receiver or streaming stick provides access to compatible apps; it does not grant access to paid content or replace a subscription.
