Build the rotation as two pieces: let Python choose and validate the files for each scheduled time window, then let FFmpeg send that sequence to a YouTube Live stream. YouTube does not supply a built-in weekly playlist rotation, and FFmpeg’s concat demuxer is not a scheduler. You must also decide how the YouTube event is managed and what happens at schedule boundaries.
How the weekly rotation works
A reliable setup separates four jobs: keeping an inventory of media, selecting the active sequence, concatenating and encoding it, and managing the YouTube event and incoming feed. Python can own the schedule and generate a stable playlist snapshot. FFmpeg can consume that snapshot. Neither component, by itself, creates a weekly YouTube schedule.
- Inventory: record each file’s path, intended order, schedule window, and duration; check that files are readable and have the streams and formats you expect.
- Select: have Python determine which ordered sequence applies at startup and at each planned changeover.
- Encode and send: use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer for compatible files, or its concat filter when inputs need normalization and re-encoding.
- Manage the event: schedule and operate the YouTube broadcast in Studio, or use the Live Streaming API to create broadcasts, bind streams, and transition broadcast states.
Define the schedule before writing the playlist
Make time and rollover rules explicit
Store a timezone with the schedule, rather than treating a label such as “Monday at 09:00” as self-explanatory. Daylight-saving changes and the weekly boundary can otherwise make the intended start ambiguous. Decide whether a new sequence starts immediately at its boundary, waits for the current item to finish, or causes the encoder to restart. These are design choices; Python, FFmpeg, and YouTube do not prescribe one universal rollover policy.
A practical model has records for the file path, playlist or day, start and end times, and order within the sequence. At startup and each planned boundary, Python can select the applicable entries and write a snapshot list for FFmpeg. Do not overwrite a list that an active FFmpeg process is reading unless your particular integration explicitly supports dynamic updates. If a sequence changes during playback, document whether your system restarts FFmpeg, starts a new broadcast, or uses a separate continuously running process that consumes newly generated segments.

Handle empty or invalid schedules
Before launch, reject an empty active sequence, a missing file, or a file that cannot be read. Make the fallback behavior explicit: stop and alert, keep the prior valid sequence running, or select a designated fallback. Silently producing an empty or partial playlist makes failures harder to diagnose.
Prepare and validate your media library
Do not assume files can be joined without re-encoding just because they share a filename extension. Probe each asset and check for the expected audio and video streams, codecs, dimensions, frame rates, time bases, and usable duration. Test transitions between representative files before scheduling a long event.

- Confirm every path resolves from the directory and account used to run the scheduler.
- Check duration metadata: the concat demuxer uses durations when assigning timestamps to subsequent files, and incorrect or missing values can cause artifacts.
- Check for consistent streams and codec characteristics if you plan to use stream copy with the concat demuxer.
- Keep an inventory of files that failed validation and prevent Python from adding them to the active sequence.
Choose the right FFmpeg concatenation method
Concat demuxer for compatible files
The concat demuxer reads a text list and presents its files as one sequential input. It can avoid re-encoding when the inputs are suitable, but their streams, codecs, time bases, and related characteristics need to match. It is not a general solution for mixing arbitrary videos. FFmpeg documents the format and its constraints in the concat demuxer documentation.
A list that FFmpeg can recognize automatically begins with the exact first line ffconcat version 1.0, followed by file directives; a duration directive can provide or override a file’s duration. Escape paths correctly, especially when they contain spaces or special characters. The demuxer’s default safe setting is enabled and can reject unsafe paths or directives. Keep that protection where possible; only change it after reviewing the path-trust implications.

Concat filter when inputs need normalization
Use the concat filter when you need to re-encode or normalize inputs so that their streams match. This gives you a route for handling differing source formats, but requires an encoding pipeline rather than simply joining compatible packets. Consult the FFmpeg FAQ for the distinctions among the concat demuxer, concat filter, and concat protocol. The concat protocol joins at the file level and is limited to certain container formats; it is not a general playlist mechanism.
Connect FFmpeg to YouTube Live
Understand the event and the feed
YouTube distinguishes a liveBroadcast, the event viewers watch, from a liveStream, the audiovisual feed sent to YouTube. For recurring events with unchanged encoder settings, YouTube documents reusing one configured stream across multiple broadcasts; only one event can be live at a time in that shared-stream arrangement. A separate stream for each broadcast is also supported. See YouTube’s explanation of broadcasts and streams.

| Pattern | When it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| One configured stream reused across broadcasts | Recurring events with the same ingestion settings | Keeps the encoder configuration stable; only one event can be live at a time when sharing the stream. |
| A separate stream for each broadcast | Events that need distinct stream resources or ingestion settings | Requires managing separate stream resources for the events. |
Choose Studio or API event management
The simpler setup is to schedule or manage events in YouTube Studio and automate only playlist selection and encoding. For a more automated lifecycle, the YouTube Live Streaming API overview describes creating broadcasts and streams, binding them, and transitioning broadcast state. FFmpeg sends the feed; it does not create the YouTube event.
Use the configured ingestion details safely
YouTube’s liveStreams resource reference describes the ingestion settings. For RTMPS, use the primary ingestion URL. Depending on the encoder, enter the stream URL and stream name/key separately or combine them. Never publish or commit a real stream key. Store it in an environment variable or secret store, and keep it out of routine logs.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the complete rotation before relying on it
- Validate inputs: probe every scheduled file and reject missing, unreadable, or incompatible media.
- Check the generated sequence: verify its order, durations, timezone, and boundary behavior against the intended weekly schedule.
- Run a representative transition: test files with different durations and inspect audio and video at the join for timestamp or stream issues.
- Test privately or unlisted: run the complete scheduler-to-YouTube pipeline with a private or unlisted event before depending on a public scheduled broadcast. This reduces risk but cannot guarantee that every failure will be caught.
- Observe a changeover: confirm the selected next sequence and verify what happens to the current item and broadcast at the boundary.
YouTube’s live-streaming and monetization requirements can affect whether content is suitable to broadcast or monetize. Check current YouTube rules for copyright, reused content, and live streaming before scheduling material you do not own or have permission to use. A technically successful feed does not establish rights to the content.
Keep the long-running process observable
A weekly rotation still needs operational handling for process exits, network interruptions, invalid media, and schedule changes. FFmpeg and YouTube do not guarantee that a Python scheduler or encoder will recover correctly from every failure; design and test your own recovery policy.
- Log the selected playlist, the file currently playing, encoder process status, and relevant errors without logging the stream key.
- Detect a stalled or exited process and decide whether to alert, restart FFmpeg, or stop for operator review. A restart policy should avoid repeatedly restarting a configuration that is invalid.
- Check network interruption behavior and confirm what your encoder and event do after the connection returns.
- At each boundary, log the schedule decision and whether the transition was immediate, deferred to the next item, or performed by restarting the encoder.
- Recheck official YouTube ingestion and encoder guidance and your installed FFmpeg version when maintaining the setup.
