Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAdvertisers buy confidence before they buy impressions. A media company sales strategy earns that confidence by connecting a verified audience to a specific business objective, showing exactly where ads can appear, and agreeing on measurement before the campaign starts.
The practical sequence is: define the buyer and desired outcome, document inventory and eligibility, substantiate audience claims, make delivery and suitability controls visible, set comparable measurement definitions, and use every campaign to improve the next proposal. The framework below is designed for publishers, documentary outlets, and other media companies selling across more than one channel.
Start with the buyer’s objective, not your list of ad units
A sales deck that begins with your homepage traffic or a menu of formats forces the advertiser to do the strategic work. Begin by identifying what the advertiser needs to change. IAB Europe’s Digital Advertising Effectiveness Measurement Framework separates effectiveness into media, brand, and sales dimensions. Your proposal should name which dimension is being purchased and what evidence will represent it.
Translate business goals into a sellable objective
- Media effectiveness: the buyer needs reliable delivery against an agreed audience, context, geography, or schedule. The proposal should define the delivery variables you can report and the conditions under which they are counted.
- Brand effectiveness: the buyer wants to influence awareness, consideration, perception, or another brand response. State whether a brand-lift study, survey, or another approved method will be used, who supplies it, and what the design can and cannot establish.
- Sales effectiveness: the buyer wants a commercial response such as qualified traffic, leads, transactions, or another business action. Define the conversion event, attribution window, data owner, and limitations before launch.
Do not blur these categories. A delivery report can show that an ad was served; it does not, by itself, prove a change in brand perception or incremental sales. If the buyer has several goals, rank them and assign a separate measure to each rather than presenting one blended score.

Use a qualification brief for every opportunity
- Record the advertiser’s product, market, buying geography, campaign dates, budget range, and approval process.
- Ask which audience or context matters and what exclusions are mandatory.
- Identify the primary objective: media, brand, sales, or a documented combination.
- Confirm required formats, buying method, creative deadlines, tracking requirements, and reporting recipients.
- Write down success criteria in the advertiser’s language before recommending inventory.
This brief prevents a common failure: selling the inventory you have instead of the outcome the buyer needs. It also gives account, editorial, ad-operations, and measurement teams one version of the promise.
Document the audience you can credibly reach
Audience scale is persuasive only when a buyer can understand exactly what the number means. Every audience claim should carry its geography, time period, definition, source, and collection method. If a figure is modeled, sampled, panel-based, or estimated from platform logs, label it plainly.
Build an evidence register
Create a maintained register for each audience statement used in a proposal or media kit. Include:
- Metric name and plain-language definition.
- Population and geography covered.
- Measurement period and refresh date.
- Data source, methodology, and owner.
- Whether the result is observed, modeled, sampled, or self-reported.
- Known exclusions, duplication risks, and confidence limitations.
- The person responsible for approving future use.
Freeze the wording of approved claims so sales staff cannot accidentally turn a monthly figure into an annual one or a sampled estimate into a census. Date every chart. When a buyer asks for a segment you do not measure, say so and offer the closest verified context rather than infer a demographic from editorial tone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDescribe context as an asset
Documentary publishers often have strong subject-matter environments: investigative reporting, history, science, culture, or social issues. Explain the editorial context and the audiences who choose it, but do not imply that every visitor has the same beliefs, purchase intent, or demographic profile. Contextual targeting can be part of the offer when it is actually implemented; describe the taxonomy, eligible pages or programs, exclusions, and review process.
Inventory every sellable placement and its eligibility rules
A media kit is a buying guide, not a brochure. IAB Canada’s publisher media-kit resource emphasizes advertising capabilities and buying criteria, including formats and considerations such as brand-lift surveys, ads.txt compliance, and contextual targeting. Organize your kit so a buyer can determine fit, availability, and requirements without a discovery call.
Create an inventory map
For each channel, record the placement, format, environment, device, position, duration or unit size, booking method, creative specifications, frequency or exposure controls, and any editorial or legal restrictions. Distinguish guaranteed placements from opportunities that depend on availability. If sponsorships or custom content require editorial review, state the lead time and approval gate.

- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
Make eligibility and exclusions explicit
- List categories, topics, or advertisers that cannot run in particular environments.
- Identify inventory that is reserved for editorial, members, partners, or other commitments.
- Explain whether content adjacency is selected by page, episode, section, keyword, taxonomy, or a human review.
- State creative review rules, prohibited claims, and technical acceptance criteria.
- Separate standard units from custom integrations so a buyer understands the operational risk and timeline.
Clear constraints increase trust. They also stop sales from promising placements that ad operations cannot deliver.

Package around a use case
Turn the inventory map into a small number of understandable packages: for example, a contextual package around a defined documentary theme, a cross-channel launch package, or a sponsorship with a clearly bounded custom component. Each package should specify included placements, eligible environments, dates, creative obligations, reporting, and the objective it is intended to support. Avoid calling a package “full-funnel” unless you have separately defined media, brand, and sales measures for it.
Make trust, placement, and suitability visible
Buyers need to know where an ad can run, how that placement is controlled, and what evidence they will receive. IAB’s standards and best-practices index covers measurement and verification guidance; use the relevant standards as operating references and describe your implementation in plain language.
Explain supply and placement controls
- Describe direct, programmatic, private-marketplace, and sponsorship paths separately.
- State which domains, apps, players, feeds, or episodes are eligible.
- Explain how ads.txt or equivalent authorization files are maintained where applicable.
- Describe fraud, invalid-traffic, viewability, and content-suitability controls, including who performs each check.
- Tell the buyer whether verification is first-party, third-party, or unavailable for a particular environment.
Do not claim universal brand safety. Suitability is a policy and an enforcement process. Publish the categories you block or review, the escalation route, and the reporting you can provide when a placement is challenged.
Address the video measurement concerns buyers report
The IAB 2024 Video Ad Spend Report, citing Advertiser Perceptions, reports the following respondent-selected issues for measuring TV and video campaigns, including TV, connected TV, social video, and other digital video:
| Issue selected by respondents | Share of respondents | How to address it in a proposal |
|---|---|---|
| Co-viewing | 70% | Define whether the unit of exposure is a device, stream, account, or estimated viewers, and explain the method. |
| Placement transparency | 69% | Provide an inventory list, inclusion rules, and post-campaign placement reporting. |
| Brand safety and suitability | 68% | Show policy categories, pre-launch review, monitoring, and escalation steps. |
| Viewability | 67% | State the viewability definition, eligible environments, measurement provider, and exclusions. |
These are survey responses, not universal buyer preferences and not evidence that any particular publisher performs better. Use them to make your own controls easier to inspect.
Use verification standards where they fit
IAB Tech Lab lists the Open Measurement SDK for third-party viewability and verification in web video, mobile-app, and connected-TV environments. If your inventory supports it, identify the environments, SDK version or implementation status, eligible measurement vendors, and any gaps. Do not imply that an SDK measures every outcome or solves co-viewing and attribution by itself.

Design a measurement plan before you quote the campaign
Measurement should be a line item in the sales process, not a postscript. The IAB Measurement Center identifies shared language, consistency, attribution, incrementality, marketing mix modeling, and privacy-conscious measurement as cross-channel work areas. Agree on definitions while the proposal can still change.
Write a measurement charter
- Objective: state the media, brand, or sales result being evaluated.
- Metric definition: define every term, including what counts as an impression, completed view, visit, lead, or conversion.
- Source: name the log, ad server, platform, survey, clean-room process, or other data source.
- Coverage: specify channels, devices, geography, dates, and exclusions.
- Cadence: set interim and final reporting dates and the recipients.
- Attribution: document the model, lookback window, identity limitations, and whether results are directional or causal.
- Privacy: explain consent, aggregation, retention, and any thresholding that affects reporting.
- Decision rule: state what action follows a result, such as reallocating delivery, changing creative, or planning a follow-up study.
Keep cross-channel definitions comparable
Use one glossary for the campaign. If a “view” means different things in a player, a social feed, and connected TV, show the differences instead of adding the counts together. Report channel-specific results first, then provide a carefully labeled aggregate only when the underlying definitions and deduplication method support it.

Separate attribution from incrementality
Attribution assigns observed actions to touchpoints according to a model. Incrementality asks what would have happened without the advertising and requires an appropriate test or quasi-experimental design. Do not call a last-touch report incremental lift. If the campaign cannot support a causal design, label the result as attributed, modeled, or directional and explain the limitation.
Choose methods that match the objective
A delivery objective may be evaluated with standardized ad-server and verification data. A brand objective may use a brand-lift survey when the sample, control design, timing, and questionnaire are suitable. A sales objective may require conversion data, agreed attribution, or a marketing-mix approach for broader decisions. The method is part of the product; price and scope it explicitly.
Build a sales operation that can keep the promise
A polished deck cannot compensate for inconsistent proposals, missed creative deadlines, or reports that change definitions mid-campaign. A historical IAB Digital Media Sales Certification study guide from 2015 lists audience segmentation, measurement tools, verification, private marketplaces, ad serving, and media terms and conditions as relevant knowledge areas. Treat that list as an operations checklist, not a current benchmark.
Define ownership by stage
- Marketing or audience team: maintains approved audience evidence and editorial-context descriptions.
- Sales: qualifies the buyer, selects the package, records commitments, and manages the commercial relationship.
- Ad operations: validates creative, trafficking, pacing, targeting, and delivery exceptions.
- Editorial and legal: review sponsorships, custom content, sensitive categories, and disclosures.
- Measurement: approves definitions, data sources, methodology, and report interpretation.
- Finance or commercial operations: controls terms, billing triggers, make-goods, and reconciliation.
Standardize the proposal record
Use one structured record containing the buyer objective, audience definition, inventory and dates, creative requirements, price and terms, measurement charter, approval status, risks, and owner. Version it whenever a promise changes. This record becomes the handoff document for trafficking and the reference point for post-campaign reconciliation.

Set service levels
Publish internal deadlines for briefing, creative review, tag acceptance, launch readiness, pacing checks, incident escalation, and final reporting. A buyer should know when a custom proposal can be approved and what happens if assets arrive late. Make-goods should be governed by the signed terms and the actual shortfall, not improvised at renewal time.

Turn the media kit into a decision tool
Organize the kit in the order a buyer evaluates risk and fit:
- Who you reach: verified audience definitions with geography, period, source, and methodology.
- What you sell: channels, formats, placements, sponsorships, and custom capabilities.
- Where ads appear: eligible environments, contextual rules, exclusions, and suitability controls.
- How buying works: direct, programmatic, private-marketplace, or sponsorship process, with lead times and requirements.
- How delivery is verified: ad serving, viewability, fraud, placement, and any third-party verification available.
- How success is measured: objective, definitions, sources, cadence, attribution, and limitations.
- How to start: contact path, briefing template, creative specifications, and approval milestones.
Include brand-lift survey availability only if you can state the design, cost treatment, sample requirements, and reporting timetable. Include ads.txt compliance as a current operational statement, with the domains and maintenance owner, rather than as a decorative badge.
Sell across multiple offers without creating confusion
When you have a website, video channel, podcast, newsletter, events, or custom-content capability, compare offers using the same decision axes. The buyer should see trade-offs in scale, specificity, control, and reporting rather than a collection of disconnected rate cards.
| Comparison axis | Question the buyer should be able to answer |
|---|---|
| Audience fit | Which verified audience or context is reached, and how is it defined? |
| Inventory and format | What placements, units, durations, and creative requirements are included? |
| Geography | Which markets are eligible, and how is location measured? |
| Buying criteria | What are the booking path, minimum lead time, availability rules, and approvals? |
| Placement transparency | What environments or programs can be disclosed before and after delivery? |
| Brand suitability | Which policies, exclusions, and review processes apply? |
| Verification | Which first- or third-party checks are available in this environment? |
| Measurement method | What is counted, by which source, on what cadence, with what limitations? |
| Objective | Is the offer designed for media, brand, sales, or a defined combination? |
Do not rank channels universally. Use company-specific evidence and let the buyer choose whether greater scale, tighter context, richer integration, or stronger reporting matters most.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Run a consultative outreach and pitch process
Prioritize accounts by fit and readiness
Build a target list from advertisers whose products, geography, timing, and risk requirements match your verified capabilities. A small number of well-qualified accounts is more productive than broad outreach that promises an audience you cannot document. Note the likely objective and the evidence you can bring to the first conversation.
Lead with a diagnostic conversation
- Ask what business result the advertiser must influence and by when.
- Ask which audiences, contexts, and exclusions are non-negotiable.
- Ask how the advertiser currently defines success and which reporting is trusted internally.
- Confirm buying, legal, creative, and privacy constraints.
- Reflect the answers back in a one-page brief before presenting a package.
Present proof in a logical order
Show the verified audience evidence, then the inventory and eligibility rules, then the controls and measurement charter. Use one example of a delivery exception or limitation when relevant; candid constraints make the rest of the promise more credible. Keep custom ideas tied to a defined objective and an operational owner.
Manage delivery and communicate during the campaign
At launch, verify that the booked environments, creative versions, tracking, dates, and measurement tags match the signed proposal. Monitor pacing and quality against the agreed definitions. If inventory, suitability, or measurement conditions change, notify the buyer quickly, document the impact, and propose an approved remedy.
Best Value
- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
Use a regular reporting rhythm
- Send an early quality check confirming launch, eligible placements, and tracking status.
- Provide interim delivery reports on the agreed cadence, using the same glossary as the proposal.
- Flag underdelivery, creative rejection, verification gaps, or data delays with an owner and resolution date.
- Keep optimization changes separate from changes to the original objective or measurement method; obtain approval for the latter.
Make the post-campaign review part of the product
A useful closeout compares planned and delivered results, explains variance, and records what should change next time. Report the agreed metrics first, followed by interpretation and limitations. Do not turn a high delivery number into a causal sales claim without a design that supports incrementality.
Use a four-part closeout
- Reconcile: compare booked, delivered, verified, and billable amounts by placement and period.
- Explain: document pacing, creative, suitability, audience, or measurement exceptions.
- Interpret: relate results to the declared media, brand, or sales objective and state what the data cannot establish.
- Recommend: propose one or two evidence-based changes to inventory, creative, targeting, timing, or study design.
Ask the buyer which evidence influenced the next decision. Feed that answer into the audience register, package definitions, qualification brief, and media kit. Learning compounds when it is recorded as an operating change rather than left in an account executive’s notes.
Common strategy failures and practical fixes
Failure: unqualified reach claims
Fix: attach geography, period, definition, source, and methodology to every figure; remove claims that cannot be verified.
Failure: selling formats without an objective
Fix: map each package to media, brand, or sales effectiveness and name the measure before discussing price.

Days 1–30: establish the evidence base
- Inventory every channel, placement, format, and restriction.
- Create the audience evidence register and remove unsupported claims.
- Document suitability, authorization, verification, and reporting capabilities.
- Choose one shared glossary for sales, operations, and measurement.
Days 31–60: build the commercial system
- Publish a media kit organized around audience, inventory, buying criteria, controls, and measurement.
- Create the qualification brief, proposal template, measurement charter, and handoff record.
- Define owners, service levels, approval gates, and make-good rules.
- Design a small set of packages tied to distinct buyer objectives.
Days 61–90: test, learn, and refine
- Run the qualification process with a focused group of well-matched prospects.
- Audit whether every proposal contains objective, evidence, eligibility, measurement, and limitations.
- Review launch and reporting workflows with ad operations and editorial stakeholders.
- Conduct a post-campaign or pilot review, record buyer questions, and update the kit and packages.
The result is a sales strategy that is easier to buy because it makes the important decisions explicit: who the advertiser needs to reach, where the message can run, what controls apply, how success will be measured, and what the publisher will learn afterward.
