Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou can build a continuous YouTube lofi radio stream by preparing compatible media, listing tracks in an FFmpeg concat manifest, and sending the resulting audio and video to YouTube Live. The concat demuxer plays files in sequence; it does not make mismatched files compatible or keep a failed encoder running. A dependable 24/7 broadcast therefore needs media validation, correct ingest settings, monitoring, and a recovery plan.
Choose the right FFmpeg concat method
FFmpeg offers two different approaches that are easy to confuse:
| Method | When it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer | Your files already expose the same streams and compatible properties, including codecs and time bases. | Reads files sequentially without serving as a general-purpose normalizer. It is usually the simpler route when inputs match. |
| Concat filter | Your sources need a filter-and-re-encode workflow to produce a consistent output. | Offers a way to combine inputs as part of processing, but re-encoding adds work and requires settings appropriate to the source material. |
FFmpeg’s FAQ distinguishes the concat filter for cases where re-encoding is needed from the concat demuxer for compatible streams. See the FFmpeg FAQ on joining media and the concat demuxer documentation.
Prepare compatible audio and visuals
Inventory the files
Decide whether the stream will use a static image, a looping visual, or a sequence of prepared video files. Check each audio and video file for its streams, codecs, time bases, and duration. For demuxer concatenation, the listed files need the same streams and compatible properties; a playlist containing differently encoded tracks is not made consistent just because it appears in one manifest.

Normalize sources that differ
If files have different stream layouts or encoding properties, create consistent intermediate media or use a concat-filter workflow that re-encodes them. Choose output properties for the actual source material and target stream; there is no universal filter graph for every collection of lofi tracks and visuals.
For audio-first programming, the audio playlist and visual can be separate inputs, but the exact filter graph and stream mapping depend on the assets and installed FFmpeg build. Do not treat an untested generic command as a reliable template.
Create the concat manifest
Save a plain-text script with one file directive per track, in playback order. A minimal example is:

ffconcat version 1.0
file '/media/track-001.mp3'
file '/media/track-002.mp3'
file '/media/track-003.mp3'
Use paths readable by the FFmpeg process. Filenames containing quotes or other special characters need correct escaping. Relative paths, absolute paths, and safe-path behavior depend on how the manifest is invoked; check the FFmpeg concat script documentation for the installed version and deployment before relying on a manifest in production.

- Open every listed file locally. Check that all tracks can be read and decoded, rather than discovering a bad path or damaged file during a long broadcast.
- Check transitions. Listen across track boundaries and confirm that audio remains present and the visual behaves as intended.
- Check duration behavior. The concat demuxer uses file duration to place the next file. Incorrect duration metadata can cause artifacts; FFmpeg documents a
durationdirective for overriding a file’s stored duration when necessary. See the concat demuxer documentation. - Run a short local decode or test output. Verify that FFmpeg maps the intended audio and video streams and that the result plays before starting a public live session.
Configure YouTube Live and the FFmpeg output
Create the live stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the ingest URL and stream key into your encoder configuration. Treat the key as a password: keep it out of public scripts, screenshots, source control, and logs.
- If the key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement. YouTube explains stream keys and encoder setup in its live encoder setup guidance.
Match the encoder to YouTube’s guidance
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions as the authority for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. Its guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS transport; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); support up to 60 fps; and a recommended 2-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding 4 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
Choose the bitrate from YouTube’s table for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate; one number is not correct for every stream. Configure the audio format and rate for the chosen output as well. The stream URL, key, mapping, and codec options depend on your setup, so any FFmpeg command should be built and tested against the installed FFmpeg version and actual media rather than copied as a universal 24/7 command.

Test the ingest and monitor the broadcast
Before relying on a continuous stream, test with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. YouTube specifically advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages. Its encoder guidance and live streaming tips cover encoder and network checks.
- Confirm that YouTube receives both intended audio and video and reports a healthy incoming stream.
- Check the available upload capacity against the chosen bitrate and leave bandwidth room. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% headroom in the relevant bandwidth calculation.
- Test the real playlist and visual, including a track boundary, rather than a motionless or silent stand-in.
- Keep an eye on YouTube’s stream-health messages and the FFmpeg process output during the test.
A successful short test confirms only that the tested configuration worked at that time; it does not establish uninterrupted operation for a 24/7 broadcast.

A playlist command alone is not a 24/7 operations plan. The reviewed FFmpeg and YouTube guidance does not establish a universal server size, hosting plan, uptime guarantee, or reconnection strategy. Requirements depend on resolution, frame rate, encoders, input count and formats, and whether processing runs locally or on hosted compute.

Troubleshoot common failures
FFmpeg rejects a file or the playlist
Likely cause: A missing or unreadable path, special characters that were not escaped, or files with incompatible stream layouts, codecs, or time bases.
Fix: Confirm paths and manifest syntax, then inspect the inputs and normalize mismatched media or use a concat-filter workflow that re-encodes.
Clicks, gaps, or artifacts appear at track boundaries
Likely cause: Inaccurate duration metadata or source-specific boundary behavior.
Fix: Test transitions locally, verify durations, and use the concat demuxer’s duration directive to override incorrect stored duration where appropriate.
YouTube does not receive a healthy stream
Likely cause: Incorrect ingest URL or key, an unsupported or mismatched encoding configuration, or insufficient upload capacity.
Fix: Recheck the stream setup in Live Control Room, compare codec and bitrate settings with YouTube’s guidance for the target output, and test the connection with adequate bandwidth headroom.

Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.
The stream stops after running successfully
Likely cause: A process exit, network disruption, unavailable media, or another failure outside the playlist’s playback logic.
Fix: Inspect FFmpeg and system logs, confirm media and network access, and use the recovery procedure planned for the deployment. A manifest does not itself restart a failed encoder or guarantee that YouTube reconnects.
