The demuxer does not repair mismatched files or guarantee seamless transitions: validate the media, test the stream, and monitor its health before relying on it to run continuously.
What the concat demuxer does—and what it does not
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text playlist and processes the listed files in sequence as though their packets had been muxed together. It adjusts timestamps so the first input starts at zero and later inputs follow it. That timestamp adjustment is global, so differences in stream lengths can produce gaps or other timing problems. A stored duration that is inaccurate—for example, because it was estimated from bitrate or the file is truncated—can also affect the timestamps of following files. The FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation explains the format and its duration directive.
The demuxer expects matching streams, including codecs and time bases. It is a packet-level option for compatible inputs, not a universal seamless-loop feature or a tool for normalizing different clips. If your sources need conversion or other per-clip changes, use FFmpeg’s concat filter, which can re-encode as needed; FFmpeg describes the distinction in its joining video files FAQ.
Prepare compatible nature-sound clips
Inspect and align the media
Before making the playlist, check each file’s streams, codecs, time bases, and duration with a media-inspection tool such as ffprobe. Confirm that the files have the same stream layout and compatible parameters. If clips differ, convert them to a common format or use the concat filter rather than assuming the demuxer will reconcile them.

- Check that the intended video and audio streams exist in every clip and have matching codecs and time bases.
- Check clip durations, especially for truncated files or files whose metadata may report an estimated duration.
- Listen to the audio at transitions and inspect the video for gaps or abrupt changes. Matching technical streams alone does not make edits perceptually seamless.
- Keep the source files and playlist in a location the FFmpeg process can read for the full broadcast.
Create the playlist
Save a text file such as playlist.ffconcat. The first line identifies the concat-script format; each following file line points to one clip in playback order.

file '/media/nature-03.mp4'Use paths that exist on the machine running FFmpeg. The example uses absolute paths; relative paths can also be used when resolved from the playlist’s location. If you add a duration directive, use a verified duration: it overrides the stored duration for timestamp adjustment, but it does not change the media itself.
Encode and send the stream to YouTube
Set up YouTube Live
In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and copy its ingest address and stream key into your encoder configuration. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. The example below uses placeholder text only; replace it with the ingest URL and key shown for your stream, and do not publish a real key.

YouTube currently accepts RTMP and RTMPS for live ingestion and recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP. YouTube also supports HLS ingestion for supported use cases; HLS delivers video in segments and has higher latency than a continuous RTMP-style stream. Choose a protocol supported by your encoder and suitable for your use case. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and HLS ingestion guidance.

Example FFmpeg command
This illustrative command loops a compatible playlist, encodes H.264 video and AAC audio, and sends an FLV stream to an RTMP/RTMPS ingest endpoint:

-f flv 'rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'This is an example to adapt, not a tested command or a guaranteed configuration. Its 10 Mbps video bitrate is YouTube’s listed recommendation for H.264 at 1080p30, not a universal bitrate for other resolutions or frame rates. The example’s -g 60 corresponds to a two-second GOP only when the output is 30 frames per second; set the frame rate and keyframe interval deliberately so they agree.

The command uses -safe 0 to allow paths outside the concat demuxer’s restricted safe subset. That can be useful with absolute paths, but only use a playlist you trust: untrusted file-list content can point FFmpeg at unintended files. -re paces input in real time. Confirm option behavior and placement against the documentation for your installed FFmpeg build, particularly when looping the concat input. Source resolution, frame rate, audio, available upload capacity, and YouTube’s current configuration all affect the settings you should use.
Match YouTube’s encoder requirements
YouTube’s current guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant-bitrate (CBR) encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For H.264 at 1080p30, it lists 10 Mbps as the recommended video bitrate. These are platform settings recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection or source will stream reliably. Check YouTube’s encoder settings page for the current requirements and recommendations.

Set a compatible output frame rate and resolution rather than relying on a bitrate value alone. The sample’s audio settings are AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz; YouTube accepts AAC or MP3 audio, but select settings that suit the material and your encoder.

Test before leaving the stream unattended
Do a representative test before starting a long-running broadcast. YouTube explicitly advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event. Use audio and motion similar to the intended nature-sounds program, then check that YouTube receives a stable signal and that transitions between clips behave as expected.
- Start FFmpeg with the playlist and verify that it connects to the intended YouTube event.
- Check YouTube Studio’s stream preview and health indicators for connection or encoding warnings.
- Listen to the audio and watch transitions, including the end of the playlist and its return to the beginning.
- Confirm that the process remains running and that the available upload connection can sustain the configured bitrate.
- During the broadcast, keep monitoring stream health; a running FFmpeg process alone does not prove viewers are receiving a healthy stream.
YouTube recommends choosing settings that the available connection can support and using a speed test to assess upload capacity. Its guidance is in the live encoder settings.

Use nature recordings and video footage that you created or are licensed to broadcast on YouTube. A 24/7 loop does not change the underlying rights: music, field recordings, stock footage, and other third-party material can still be subject to copyright claims or removal. Keep records of licenses and permissions, and check that they cover continuous live streaming and the territories where the stream may be viewed.

Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are separate questions. Repeatedly looping material does not itself establish that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization policies. Review YouTube’s current channel monetization policies and copyright guidance for your circumstances; eligibility and enforcement depend on the content and channel, not just the streaming method.
Common problems and fixes
- The next clip starts late or there is a gap: confirm stream compatibility and check whether stored durations are accurate. The demuxer’s timestamp adjustment can expose duration differences; it does not repair them. Correct the source or use a verified
durationdirective where appropriate. - FFmpeg reports stream or codec mismatches: compare the streams, codecs, and time bases in every input. Standardize the inputs or switch to the concat filter when conversion is required.
- The broadcast connects but YouTube reports poor health: check that the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio format match YouTube’s guidance and that your upload connection can sustain the output. Test with representative content and monitor Studio’s health indicators.
- The stream fails to connect: verify the ingest address and stream key in YouTube Studio, confirm the selected protocol is supported by your FFmpeg setup, and ensure the key has not been changed or exposed.
- The playlist will not open: check the spelling and location of the playlist and media paths. If using
-safe 0, ensure the playlist is trusted and that FFmpeg can access every referenced file. - The loop does not behave as expected: check the installed FFmpeg version’s handling of input options such as
-stream_loopwith the concat demuxer. Test the full playlist cycle rather than assuming the example command behaves identically across builds.
