Terence Stamp, the British actor known for playing General Zod in Superman and Superman II and Bernadette in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, has died aged 87. His death was disclosed on August 17, 2025, in a statement from his family, according to the Associated Press. The AP report did not give a cause of death.
What Terence Stamp was known for
Stamp’s career moved between acclaimed early work, a defining role in superhero cinema and later performances that showed his range. The two roles most closely linked to his name are very different: the imposing Kryptonian General Zod and Bernadette, a trans woman and performer in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
General Zod in the original Superman films
Stamp played General Zod in Superman (1978) and Superman II (1980). The Associated Press describes these as the performances many viewers most associate with him. The British Film Institute says the casting helped bring Stamp into a second screen career.
Bernadette in Priscilla
In the 1994 film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Stamp played Bernadette, a trans woman and performer. The British Film Institute reports that the role earned him BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations.
