How to Block Scam Calls and Texts Without Missing Legitimate Callers

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safest approach is layered: block repeat offenders, label or screen unfamiliar calls, and keep voicemail available for callers you may need. Do not silence every number outside your contacts until you know that doctors, schools, delivery drivers, employers, or service providers will not need to reach you from new numbers. Blocking can stop wanted calls, and no filter identifies every scam.

Start with the controls built into your phone, then check your carrier or a reputable filtering app. Choose a setting that matches how much access to unfamiliar callers you need.

Choose the least aggressive control that solves your problem

“Blocking” and “labeling” are not the same. A block may reject a call, send it to voicemail, or prevent your phone from ringing. A label such as “spam” or “scam likely” leaves the decision to you. Screening answers on your behalf and asks the caller to identify the reason for calling before you decide whether to pick up. Silencing suppresses the ring but may still send the call to voicemail.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) explains that blocking services can also block calls you want. Before enabling a broad rule, think about when legitimate callers might use a new or unlisted number and whether you can reliably check voicemail.

Control What happens to the call Effect on an unfamiliar legitimate caller
Number block A selected number is rejected, silenced, or routed according to your phone or service. That specific number may no longer ring; the caller may be able to leave voicemail depending on the platform.
Spam label The phone displays a warning while leaving answering to you. A real caller can still reach you, but you must recognize the warning as a clue rather than proof.
Call screening An automated assistant asks why the caller is calling and presents the response. The caller has a path to explain an unfamiliar call before your phone rings or you answer.
Unknown-caller silence or decline A broad class of calls is suppressed or declined automatically. You may miss a new doctor, school, employer, delivery, or service number unless voicemail or another notification catches it.

Start with your phone and the calls you cannot miss

Identify whether you use an iPhone, an Android phone, a Pixel phone, an internet-based home phone (VoIP), or a traditional landline. Blocking features differ across those types. Also list the situations in which you expect an unfamiliar number:

  • A clinic, hospital, pharmacy, or specialist calling from a scheduling line.
  • A school, childcare provider, employer, recruiter, or government office using an outbound number that is not published.
  • A delivery driver or repair technician calling from a temporary or personal mobile number.
  • A family member or traveler whose number is not saved.

If any of these calls matter, begin with labels, screening, or a targeted block list. Leave voicemail enabled and check it promptly. A blanket rule that declines every number not in your contacts is the highest-risk choice for missed calls.

Block repeat offenders and label the rest

Block a known nuisance number

When the same number repeatedly calls and you have no reason to expect it, block it from the call history or conversation screen. This is more precise than suppressing every unfamiliar caller. If the number is spoofed, blocking it may stop only that displayed number; a scammer can call again with a different caller ID.

Use warnings as decision aids

Carrier and phone tools may mark calls “spam,” “scam likely,” or a similar warning. A warning is a classification, not authentication. Let a legitimate-looking call go to voicemail when you are uncertain, then return it using a trusted number. Do not assume an unmarked call is safe: scammers can evade detection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review the privacy trade-off

Some call-blocking apps request access to contacts or call information. The FTC advises reading the privacy policy to understand what data is collected, how it is used, and whether it is shared. Built-in controls generally require fewer additional permissions, while carrier and app services vary. Features and prices can change, so check current terms before enrolling.

iPhone: block selected callers and manage the list

Apple documents blocking from the Phone, FaceTime, and Messages apps. On iOS 26, blocked-contact management is under Settings → Privacy & Security → Blocked Contacts. Menu wording can change with later iOS releases.

  1. Open Phone, FaceTime, or Messages and locate the unwanted caller or conversation.
  2. Open the contact or information panel and choose the option to block the caller or contact.
  3. To review or remove blocks, open Settings → Privacy & Security → Blocked Contacts.
  4. Keep voicemail available for unfamiliar numbers that are not blocked, and review messages before returning a call.

Apple says a blocked caller can still leave voicemail, but you do not receive a notification. Messages from a blocked sender are not delivered. Therefore, blocking is appropriate for a persistent nuisance, not for an entire category of callers you may need.

Android with the Google Phone app: block one number without blocking every unsaved number

Google’s Phone app separates a selected-number block from its Unknown setting. From your call history, select a call and choose Block / report spam. Some steps require Android 6.0 or later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Phone app and open Recents or your call history.
  2. Tap the unwanted call, then choose Block / report spam.
  3. Confirm the action. Use the report option when the call is unwanted and appears to be spam.
  4. To change the broad setting, open the Phone app’s settings, find the blocked-number options, and review Unknown.

Google defines Unknown as private or unidentified numbers. It does not mean “any number that is not in my contacts.” Google explicitly states: “You will still receive calls from phone numbers that are not stored in your contacts.” This makes the setting useful when you want to reject hidden caller ID while preserving calls from visible but unsaved numbers. See Google’s instructions for blocking or unblocking a phone number.

Pixel Call Screen: screen unfamiliar callers instead of rejecting them

On supported Pixel phones, Call Screen can ask certain callers why they are calling. Automatic Call Screen does not screen saved contacts, declines calls identified as spam without alerting you, and rings for calls it does not identify as spam so you can decide whether to answer. That creates a route for a legitimate caller using a new number while removing some obvious spam before it reaches you.

Eligibility and language limits

Google documents automatic screening in English in the United States on Pixel phones running Android 10 and later. Availability is device-, region-, language-, and software-dependent; it is not a universal Android feature. Check the current settings on your Pixel before relying on it.

Use manual screening when you are unsure

When an unfamiliar call arrives, use the on-screen Call Screen option if it is offered. The assistant asks the caller to identify themselves and state the purpose. Read the transcript or response, then answer, hang up, or report the call. You can turn automatic screening off if it delays calls you need. Google’s current documentation is at Call Screen help.

Should you silence unknown callers?

Silencing all unknown callers is sensible only when missing an unexpected call has little consequence and you consistently check voicemail. It is risky during a hospital stay, a job search, a move, a school enrollment period, or a delivery window. A staged approach preserves more access:

  1. Block numbers that have repeatedly targeted you.
  2. Enable spam labels or screening for the remaining calls.
  3. Silence or decline a broad class only after confirming that important callers leave usable voicemail.
  4. Tell expected organizations how to reach you, and save their published numbers before the call.

If your phone offers separate choices for private, unidentified, and unsaved numbers, choose the narrowest one that meets your goal. On Google Phone, for example, the Unknown rule does not block visible numbers merely because they are absent from contacts.

Stop scam texts without losing important messages

Do not interact with an unexpected link

A text that claims to be from a bank, delivery company, government office, employer, or subscription service can be forged. Do not tap its link, reply with account information, or call the number in the message. The FTC warns that fake texts can steal personal or financial information, send you to spoofed websites, or install malware.

Verify through a known channel

If the message might be real, open the organization’s known website yourself or use a phone number already stored in your records, on a statement, or on an official card. Do not use the link or callback details supplied by the suspicious text. If a delivery is expected, check the order in the retailer’s or carrier’s official app rather than through the message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Filter selectively

Messaging apps may offer unknown-sender filtering, blocking, or a report option. Your mobile provider or a call-blocking app may also filter texts. Availability and names vary, so inspect the controls on your phone and check the provider’s current terms. Keep an eye on filtered folders: a new clinic, school, or employer may use a number your phone does not recognize.

Report and delete

Forward unwanted texts to 7726 (SPAM), use the messaging app’s report function, or report the message to the FTC through its consumer guidance at Unwanted Calls and Text Messages. After reporting, delete the message and any downloaded attachment. Do not keep tapping links to test whether they work.

VoIP and traditional landlines need different controls

Internet-based home phones (VoIP)

VoIP providers may offer call labeling, anonymous-call rejection, block lists, voicemail routing, or network-level filtering. Sign in to your provider’s account or contact support to see which controls are available for your number. Ask whether a rule rejects a call, sends it to voicemail, or merely labels it, and whether you can maintain an approved list for doctors, schools, relatives, and service companies.

Traditional landlines

The FTC describes small call-blocking devices that attach to a landline. Depending on the device, features can include known-scam lists, user-maintained block lists, approved-number lists, voicemail routing, or prompts asking callers to identify themselves. Compatibility depends on the phone service and wiring. Before buying or installing one, confirm that it works with your line and understand whether a caller must respond to a prompt. A prompt or aggressive block can inconvenience a legitimate caller who is using a temporary number.

Caller ID is evidence, not identity

Caller ID can display a familiar organization, your local area code, or a number that looks nearby. Scammers can spoof all of these. The FTC states, “You can’t trust caller ID because phone numbers can be faked.” Treat the display as a clue that helps you decide how to handle the call, not as proof of who is speaking.

Do not provide passwords, one-time codes, Social Security numbers, payment-card data, or remote access because a caller claims to represent a trusted organization. Hang up and call the organization through a number you obtained independently. A legitimate caller should tolerate verification.

Do Not Call registration: useful for compliant sales calls, not a scam shield

Registering a U.S. number with the National Do Not Call Registry is intended to reduce sales calls from businesses that follow the rules. It does not stop every call, and scammers can ignore the registry. Registration therefore complements blocking and screening; it does not replace them. If a sales call continues after the applicable registration period, record the number and time and report it through DoNotCall.gov.

Report calls, texts, losses, and useful details

When no money was lost

For an unwanted call, report it at DoNotCall.gov. For a suspicious text, forward it to 7726, report it in your messaging app, or use the FTC’s reporting guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When money or information was lost

Use ReportFraud.ftc.gov if you paid a scammer, disclosed sensitive information, or have information about the person or operation. Contact your bank, card issuer, or payment service immediately through a trusted channel if financial information was exposed.

Record details before deleting

Reports are more useful when they include:

  • The number that received the call or text.
  • The caller-ID number, even if you suspect it was spoofed.
  • Any callback number or payment instruction provided.
  • The date and time.
  • The message content, claimed organization, and what the caller requested.

Save a screenshot or voicemail when it is safe to do so, but do not respond merely to gather evidence.

Tune the system after real calls arrive

No filter is perfect. Review blocked-call logs, voicemail, spam folders, and screened-call transcripts during the first days after changing settings. If you find a legitimate caller was suppressed, add the verified number to your contacts or approved list and adjust the rule rather than disabling every protection.

  • A doctor or school never reached you: check blocked and spam folders, then ask the organization which number it uses and save that number.
  • A delivery driver could not get through: use the delivery service’s official app or website to add delivery instructions and a contact method.
  • Too many scams still ring: report representative examples, enable your carrier’s current labeling or blocking option, and consider screening instead of answering.
  • Important calls are delayed by screening: turn off automatic screening where supported and use manual screening or labels.
  • A blocked caller leaves no usable voicemail: remove that number from the block list and use a less aggressive setting.

Compare options before enabling a service

Option Phone or service type Screening and access behavior Text and reporting support Privacy and cost questions
Built-in phone controls iPhone and Android phones; Pixel features depend on model and software. Selected-number blocking, labels, filtering, or Pixel screening; behavior follows the platform rules. Messaging apps may filter, block, and report texts. Check permissions and software version; built-in features may be included with the phone.
Carrier service Mobile, VoIP, or landline service, depending on the provider. May label, silence, route, or block calls at the network level. Some providers filter texts and offer reporting tools. Availability and fees vary; read current terms and privacy information.
Call-blocking app Compatible mobile devices, subject to the app and operating system. May label, screen, silence, or block; unfamiliar legitimate calls can be affected. Some apps handle texts as well as calls. Review contact access, data sharing, privacy policy, and any recurring charge.
Attached landline device Traditional landlines. May use known-scam lists, approved lists, user block lists, voicemail routing, or caller prompts. Text filtering is generally not the purpose of a landline device. Confirm line compatibility, installation requirements, and whether the device is free or paid.

There is no universal best setting. The right choice depends on the phone and service you use, the unfamiliar calls you must receive, how much voicemail you can monitor, and your tolerance for privacy trade-offs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical setup you can finish today

  1. Write down the categories of legitimate unfamiliar callers you expect over the next month.
  2. Block two or three repeat nuisance numbers from your recent-call list.
  3. Turn on spam labeling, and enable screening if your phone supports it and your language and region are eligible.
  4. Leave voicemail on and set a routine for checking it.
  5. Enable your messaging app’s unknown-sender filter, but inspect the filtered folder regularly.
  6. Tell family, clinics, schools, employers, and delivery services which number you monitor.
  7. Record and report suspicious calls or texts instead of engaging with them.
  8. After a week, review missed legitimate calls and adjust one rule at a time.
