Major-promotion tryouts come later: they evaluate conditioning, movement, professionalism and coachability rather than replacing basic referee training.
There is no single professional-wrestling referee license or universal age rule established across the industry. Each school and promotion sets its own standards, schedule, medical requirements, debut criteria and booking process.
What a professional wrestling referee actually does
A referee is the match’s third person in the ring. The job is not simply to count to three. A referee translates the planned finish into visible, believable action while keeping wrestlers, ringside personnel and the audience synchronized.
Before the bell
Referees confirm the announced rules and finish, check that the competitors understand the sequence, inspect the ring area and communicate any last-minute change. They must know whether a bout is a singles match, tag match, special-rules contest or another format, because the legal procedures and count instructions differ.

During the match
The referee counts pins and submissions, enforces rope breaks and illegal actions, communicates discreet visual signals, and moves into the safest position for each spot. Good positioning lets the audience see the action and gives the referee a clear view without blocking the performers. Timing matters: a count that is too fast, too slow or poorly placed can undermine the planned finish.
Safety and escalation
Referees watch for injuries, equipment problems and situations that require the action to change. They communicate with wrestlers and ringside officials, call for medical help when necessary and know how to escalate a concern without creating unnecessary alarm. The best work is unobtrusive when everything is going well and decisive when safety or the agreed finish requires intervention.
Do you need wrestling experience, a license or a specific age?
The available professional-wrestling sources do not establish one industry-wide license, examination or age rule. Promotions and schools decide whom they will train and book. That does not make preparation optional: a referee is a trained ring performer who must understand the same physical environment as the wrestlers.
You do not have to arrive as an experienced wrestler. A promotion-connected academy can teach referee-specific skills from the beginning, provided you are physically able to train and willing to learn. Wrestling experience can help with footwork, falls, ring awareness and communication, but it is not evidence of competence by itself; referee timing, positioning and rule enforcement still require deliberate practice.

United World Wrestling publishes a staged referee-education and licensing framework for amateur competitions at its referee-education page. That framework should not be presented as a requirement for professional-wrestling referees.
Step 1: Find a promotion-connected school or academy
Start with a school that regularly works with a professional promotion or produces supervised live-show opportunities. A connected program can show you how training translates into a real event: pre-match communication, entrance timing, ringside etiquette, finishes and post-match reporting.
Next Level Pro Wrestling Academy describes training for wrestlers, referees, managers and other performers. Its referee curriculum specifically covers rules, timing, positioning and the role of the third person in the ring. Details are published at the academy page.
Contact several schools before paying. Ask for the current equipment list, class frequency, coach biographies, safety and medical procedures, insurance arrangements, how falls are supervised, whether referees train separately from wrestlers, how evaluations are recorded, and how trainees can be considered for live events. A school that cannot explain who supervises contact drills or what happens after an injury deserves careful scrutiny.

What to compare between schools
| Comparison point | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Referee curriculum | Are rules, finishes, timing, positioning, signals and safety taught as a planned sequence? | General wrestling classes may not provide enough referee-specific repetition. |
| Coaching | Who teaches, what is their professional experience, and who supervises live drills? | Clear supervision reduces avoidable injury and builds consistent technique. |
| Training environment | How are conditioning, falls, rope work and recovery introduced? | Progressive loading is safer than being pushed into advanced drills immediately. |
| Show access | Can trainees observe or work supervised matches, and what criteria determine readiness? | Refereeing is learned in context, not only in a classroom. |
| Cost and logistics | What is tuition, what is included, and how often are classes held? | Travel, equipment and missed work can make the real cost higher than tuition. |
| Booking expectations | Are bookings paid, unpaid, travel-reimbursed or simply opportunities to be evaluated? | Written expectations prevent misunderstandings about work and compensation. |
Step 2: Take an introductory session and assess the fit
An introductory class lets you watch how coaches teach beginners and how students are corrected. Next Level Pro Wrestling Academy advertises a free first session, weekday and weekend training, and a flat $200 monthly tuition on a page carrying a 2025 copyright notice. That is one school’s published example, not an industry average or a standard price.
Use the first session to assess practical details: Is the ring maintained? Are warm-ups and falls supervised? Do coaches explain why a position is safe? Are beginners separated from advanced drills when appropriate? Do students receive specific feedback rather than being told simply to “be tougher”? Ask whether tuition covers referee instruction and whether show-day costs, travel or protective equipment are extra.
Step 3: Build the referee skill set
Referee training combines rule knowledge, physical movement and performance judgment. Work through these abilities in a deliberate order rather than trying to imitate an experienced official immediately.
Rules, finishes and counts
Learn the promotion’s rules and the exact finish before you step into a bout. Practice pin counts at a consistent pace, recognize a valid shoulder position, understand rope breaks and know when an illegal action requires a warning, a count or a disqualification. A referee who does not know the planned finish can accidentally reveal the outcome or call for the wrong response.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePositioning and ring movement
Position yourself so you can see the shoulders, submission hold or illegal contact while leaving the wrestlers a clear lane. Move with short, balanced steps instead of turning your back or crossing directly through the action. Training should include corners, ropes, apron areas and moments when both competitors change direction quickly.
Communication and visual signals
Referees communicate quietly with wrestlers and use agreed visual signals for timing, injuries, missed cues and changes to the plan. Signals must be clear enough for the people who need them and subtle enough not to distract the audience. Ask your coach which signals the promotion uses; conventions vary.
Timing and match control
Count at the promotion’s established tempo, arrive at the correct moment for a break or comeback and keep the match moving without rushing performers. Timing includes entrances, bell cues, commercial or event breaks when applicable, and the interval between the finish and the announcement.
Safety awareness
Learn to recognize a wrestler who is disoriented, injured or unable to continue. Know the promotion’s escalation procedure, where medical personnel are located and who has authority to stop or alter a match. Never conceal an injury to preserve a sequence.

Step 4: Condition safely and prepare basic gear
Referees run, pivot, kneel, rise and absorb occasional contact throughout a match. Conditioning should improve cardiovascular endurance, leg strength, balance and the ability to recover while staying focused. Let coaches progress falls, rope work and contact drills instead of attempting advanced bumps on your own.
Next Level Pro Wrestling Academy lists gym clothes, a T-shirt, shorts, kneepads and athletic shoes for training. A practical first purchase is a pair of wrestling knee pads, but confirm the school’s exact requirements before buying equipment. Shoes must provide secure traction without damaging the mat, and protective gear should fit tightly enough not to shift during movement.
Ask about medical screening, injury reporting, emergency contacts and insurance before participating in physical drills. These policies differ by school; do not assume that tuition includes medical coverage.
Step 5: Earn supervised repetitions before debuting
After foundational classes, request controlled practice matches with an instructor watching. Repetition should cover starts, standard holds, pin counts, rope breaks, distractions at ringside, false finishes, the planned ending and what to do if a cue is missed. Ask for a written or verbal evaluation after each session and track the specific corrections you must demonstrate next time.
Live work should be assigned by the school or promotion, not self-appointed. A trainee may begin by observing, assisting at ringside or refereeing a low-risk training bout before being considered for a public event. Find out whether the promotion pays, reimburses travel or treats the appearance as an unpaid evaluation; the professional-wrestling sources do not establish a universal pay model.
Niigata Pro Wrestling’s published route illustrates how promotion-specific the process is. It describes a physical test, self-presentation, weekly practice and approximately six months to one year of training before debut for successful trainees. That timeline is an example from that promotion, not a guaranteed schedule elsewhere. Its details are available at the promotion’s applicant information page.
How referee training differs from wrestler training
| Skill area | Referee application | What to demonstrate |
|---|---|---|
| Rules | Apply legal and illegal actions consistently. | Correct warnings, counts, rope breaks and finishes in drills. |
| Footwork | Stay in the best viewing angle without blocking the audience. | Move around corners, ropes and changing holds while maintaining sight. |
| Conditioning | Keep pace and concentration for the full bout. | Recover quickly after running, kneeling and rising. |
| Communication | Coordinate cues without exposing the performance. | Use the promotion’s signals and quiet verbal communication. |
| Safety judgment | Identify injury or confusion and escalate appropriately. | Follow the school’s stop, medical and incident-reporting procedures. |
| Performance restraint | Support the story without becoming its focus. | Remain credible, visible and unobtrusive at the same time. |
What happens at a major-promotion tryout?
A major-promotion tryout is an evaluation after an application, not a substitute for beginner training. The WWE recruit portal says applicants submit a questionnaire; selected applicants receive invitations, attend a tryout and, if selected, begin development at the Performance Center. The portal says invitations are typically sent with four to six weeks’ notice. Read the current process at the WWE recruit portal.
The application and invitation
Submit complete, truthful information and keep contact details current. An invitation does not guarantee a contract or selection. Use the notice period to confirm travel, medical documentation, clothing and arrival instructions rather than assuming the tryout will provide equipment.

The physical evaluation
WWE’s published account of a tryout describes multi-day conditioning, footwork and ring-movement drills, rope-running and falls. It also emphasizes punctuality, cleaning the facility and coachability. Four recruits in that report tried out to become referees under WWE official Shawn Bennett, showing that referee candidates can be evaluated within the same demanding environment as other prospects. The report is at WWE’s three-day tryout account.
Bill DeMott, identified in that report as a WWE head coach, summarized the expectation: “Remember, this is a tryout camp, not a training camp.” Arrive with foundational movement and ring etiquette already developed, accept corrections immediately and maintain professionalism when tired.
How to prepare without overtraining
- Build an aerobic and strength base gradually, with rest days and coaching.
- Practice balanced footwork, controlled direction changes and safe kneeling and rising under supervision.
- Review rules, count tempo and visual signals used by the promotion that invited you.
- Prepare clean athletic clothing, required protective equipment and any requested documents.
- Plan transportation so you can arrive early; punctuality is part of the evaluation.
- Accept feedback without arguing, and ask a concise question when a correction is unclear.
Independent promotions: the usual entry route
For most aspiring referees, a local or regional promotion-connected school is the practical first market. Build trust through consistent attendance, safe work and reliable communication. Tell the promoter or head referee that you want to learn officiating, then follow the school’s evaluation process instead of demanding a booking.
Before accepting a show, clarify the date, call time, venue, match assignment, rules, finish, dress requirements, payment or reimbursement, travel responsibility and who handles emergencies. Ask whether the event is insured and whether a medical professional is present. If the answers are vague, you can decline until expectations are clear.
Keep a private record of classes, evaluations, matches worked, corrections and contacts. This helps you identify skill gaps and gives a promoter a factual account of your experience without exaggerating it. Do not claim a debut, certification or major-promotion affiliation that you have not actually received.
WWE ID and independent development schools
On October 29, 2024, WWE announced WWE ID and named Reality of Wrestling, Nightmare Factory, Black and Brave Academy, Elite Pro Wrestling Training Center and KnokX Pro Academy as initial designated schools. WWE described training, mentorship, facilities and athletic-trainer support. The announcement does not promise a referee job, guarantee admission to a listed school or replace each school’s own selection process. Read the announcement at WWE’s corporate release.
If you are considering an independently operated development school, ask specifically whether its support applies to referees as well as wrestlers, what admission standards apply, and how live-event opportunities are assigned. A branded pathway can provide useful resources, but your referee evaluation still depends on the instructors and promotion making the booking decision.

Common mistakes and how to recover
Treating a tryout as your first class
Arriving without basic conditioning, ring movement or rule knowledge leaves too much to learn under evaluation pressure. Take introductory training and supervised reps first; apply for a tryout when coaches can describe your readiness.

Learning only the visible count
A dramatic three-count is a small part of the job. If you neglect positioning, signals, finishes and safety, the match will expose the gap. Ask coaches to score the entire sequence, not just the pin.
Buying equipment before checking requirements
Schools differ on shoes, kneepads and clothing. Confirm the list and buy only what the instructor approves. Ill-fitting gear can create a safety problem.
Skipping medical and insurance questions
Do not assume a school or event covers injuries. Ask who provides first aid, what screening is required, how incidents are documented and who pays for treatment.
Expecting a booking because you paid tuition
Tuition buys access to instruction under the school’s terms; it does not establish a guaranteed debut, pay rate or contract. Request the promotion’s written criteria for live work and accept that readiness may take longer than expected.

Ignoring professionalism
Late arrival, poor hygiene, unsafe joking, arguing with coaches or leaving equipment dirty can outweigh athletic ability. The published WWE tryout account specifically includes punctuality, facility cleaning and coachability among the observed behaviors.
Choosing a development route
| Route | Best use | Limit to understand |
|---|---|---|
| Local promotion-connected academy | Build fundamentals and obtain supervised ring repetitions. | Show access, tuition and debut standards vary. |
| Independent promotion apprenticeship | Learn the specific rules and workflow of a nearby promotion. | Opportunities may depend on local demand and trust. |
| Major-promotion tryout | Have established movement, conditioning and professionalism evaluated. | Invitation-based and not beginner instruction. |
| Designated development school | Explore structured facilities, mentorship and athletic support. | WWE ID does not guarantee referee admission, a job or a booking. |
A practical first 90 days
Weeks 1–2: investigate
List nearby schools and promotions, attend an introductory session, compare safety policies and calculate tuition, travel and equipment costs. Ask who teaches referees and how students are assessed.
Weeks 3–6: establish fundamentals
Attend consistently, learn the rules and count tempo, and practice basic footwork, positioning and signals under supervision. Record every correction and do not add unsupervised falls or rope drills.
Weeks 7–10: work controlled matches
Referee training bouts with an instructor present. Demonstrate starts, legal counts, rope breaks, communication and the planned finish. Ask what must improve before a public assignment.
Weeks 11–13: seek a supervised opportunity
When your coach agrees, observe or assist at a local event and accept a match assignment appropriate to your level. Confirm call time, rules, finish, safety contact, payment and travel in advance. Use the evaluation afterward to set the next training target.
Questions to ask before committing
- How many referee-specific hours are included each week?
- Who supervises falls, contact drills and live matches?
- What medical screening, insurance and emergency procedures apply?
- What equipment is required on the first day?
- What are the objective criteria for a debut?
- Can trainees observe or work shows, and how are assignments made?
- Are tuition, event fees, travel, gear and medical costs separate?
- What pay or reimbursement, if any, applies to refereeing?
- How are feedback and incidents documented?
- Can I speak with current students about their experience?
The realistic career sequence
A sustainable route is incremental: choose a safe school, learn the promotion’s rules and signals, condition progressively, obtain the required gear, complete supervised repetitions, and accept local work only when instructors judge you ready. Use a major tryout as an evaluation of skills you have already built. Promotions may differ on every administrative detail, but the core expectation remains consistent: a referee must be physically prepared, technically accurate, safety-conscious, punctual and coachable.
