To batch-convert videos on Windows for YouTube, install FFmpeg, test a suitable conversion on one file, then run that command in a Windows batch loop that saves outputs to a separate folder. This prepares files for upload; it does not send them to YouTube Live. The YouTube settings below are upload recommendations, not India-specific requirements.
Before you batch convert: upload is not live streaming
FFmpeg can create or copy video files on your PC. Converting a folder does not publish those files or keep a YouTube live stream running. The encoding guidance here is for uploaded videos; YouTube Live has a separate ingestion workflow.
For an ordinary SDR upload, MP4 containing H.264 video and compatible audio is a practical target. Do not assume every source needs conversion: if its streams already suit the intended container and YouTube workflow, stream copying may avoid another lossy encode. Whether copying works depends on the source codecs and container.
Check FFmpeg and choose an output folder
- Install an FFmpeg build for Windows from a source you trust, and make sure its
bindirectory is on PATH if you want to runffmpegfrom any folder. - Open Command Prompt and run
ffmpeg -version. If Windows reports that the command is not recognized, add the FFmpegbindirectory to PATH or run FFmpeg using its full executable path. - Create an input folder, such as
C:Videosto-convert, and a separate output folder, such asC:Videosyoutube-ready. Keeping outputs outside the input folder prevents the loop from picking up its own converted files.
Pick settings for the source and upload
Container, video, and audio
YouTube’s upload recommendations include the MP4 container, H.264 video, progressive scan, High Profile, two consecutive B frames, a closed GOP with a GOP length half the frame rate, CABAC, variable bitrate, and 4:2:0 chroma subsampling. Listed audio options include AAC-LC and Opus; the recommended sample rate is 48 kHz. Eclipsa Audio is also listed in eligible contexts. See YouTube’s encoding settings for video uploads.

Resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
YouTube advises encoding and uploading at the frame rate at which footage was recorded. Common rates listed include 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 fps; other rates are also accepted. Avoid forcing a different frame rate without a reason. If footage is interlaced, deinterlace it before upload; YouTube gives converting 1080i60 to 1080p30 as an example.
For SDR, YouTube recommends BT.709. Its upload bitrate recommendations are below; these are guidance values, not minimum requirements or guarantees of playback quality. They are not India-specific broadband or upload-speed rules.
| SDR resolution | Standard frame rate | High frame rate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p | 5 Mbps | 7.5 Mbps |
| 1080p | 8 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) | 35–45 Mbps | 53–68 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube recommendations in its encoding guidance accessed in 2026; the page does not state a publication year. For SDR audio, the recommendations are 384 kbps for stereo, 128 kbps for mono, and 512 kbps for 5.1. Those are audio bitrates, separate from video bitrate.

Aspect ratio and source preservation
YouTube’s standard computer aspect ratio is 16:9, but its player adapts to vertical, square, and other aspect ratios. Do not stretch or crop footage merely to force 16:9 unless that is the intended composition. Choose output resolution and frame rate based on the material and destination instead of blindly forcing a one-size-fits-all profile.

For a straightforward SDR source, this illustrative command creates an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, retaining the input’s dimensions and frame rate. The bitrate options are examples for a 1080p standard-frame-rate upload; select values appropriate to your actual resolution and frame-rate class using YouTube’s recommendations above.

This example assumes standard-frame-rate 30 fps footage: its GOP options use 60 frames, half a second’s frame-rate count, as a starting point for YouTube’s closed-GOP guidance. If your source uses another frame rate, adjust GOP length accordingly. The command maps the first video stream and, if present, the first audio stream; it does not preserve every track, subtitle, chapter, or metadata item. Review the output before applying a profile to a folder.
For a pilot, convert one representative file, play the result, check audio and picture, and upload it privately or unlisted to review YouTube processing before converting the whole collection. This command is not a universal fix for HDR, variable-frame-rate material, unusual codecs, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, or every source/container combination.
Batch convert a folder in a Windows .bat file
Once the one-file command works, save the following as convert.bat. The percent sign in the loop variable is doubled for a batch file; at an interactive Command Prompt, a loop variable uses a single percent sign. This loop targets MOV files as an example. Change *.mov to the extension you want to process, and adapt the conversion settings to the inputs.

- Replace the two folder paths with your actual input and output locations. Keep quotation marks around paths, especially if they contain spaces.
- Change the file pattern if your files use another extension. To process different extensions, use a separate loop for each pattern rather than assuming one wildcard covers all formats.
- Save the file and run it from Command Prompt. The
-noption makes FFmpeg refuse to overwrite an existing output; remove or rename old outputs deliberately if you want to run a fresh conversion. - Review FFmpeg’s output for errors, then inspect several converted files before running the script on the entire collection.
Windows CMD parses the batch loop, and FFmpeg parses its own options and any filter expressions. Filters or complex commands may need another layer of escaping for the shell; FFmpeg’s documentation cautions that command-line and script use can require shell-specific escaping. See FFmpeg’s quoting and escaping documentation.

- Stream copy (
-c copy): avoids re-encoding, so it can be faster and avoids another lossy generation. It does not convert codecs or make unsuitable streams compatible; source streams must fit the chosen container and intended upload. - Re-encode: lets you change codec, bitrate, or other properties, but takes processing time and may reduce quality. Avoid converting a file that already meets your needs just for the sake of conversion.
- Hardware encoding: may be available in some builds and on some PCs, but encoder availability and results depend on the installed FFmpeg build and hardware. Do not assume it will be faster or produce the same quality as software encoding on your machine.
FFmpeg transcodes streams by default; specifying -c copy requests copying instead. Its documentation explains the distinction and warns that incompatible choices can fail or produce invalid output: FFmpeg command-line documentation. The all-in-one documentation also includes Windows Media Foundation hardware-encoding examples, but their presence does not mean your build supports a particular encoder: FFmpeg full documentation.

Troubleshooting common batch-conversion problems
- “ffmpeg is not recognized”: FFmpeg is not on PATH, or the shell was opened before PATH changed. Add the executable’s directory to PATH or use its full path, then open a new Command Prompt.
- Files with spaces fail: Quote input and output paths, including the folder variables and the full input filename in the loop.
- No files convert: Check that the input directory and extension pattern match actual files. The example searches for MOV files only.
- Outputs already exist: The example uses
-nand will not overwrite. Move, rename, or remove old outputs if you intend to create new ones. - FFmpeg reports an encoder, codec, or muxing error: The chosen build or stream/container combination may not support the request. Check the installed build and source streams; do not treat stream copy and transcoding as interchangeable.
- Audio is missing or a track is wrong: The sample command maps only the first audio stream if one exists. Files with multiple tracks need deliberate stream mapping.
- The picture looks wrong or YouTube processes it unexpectedly: Check whether the source is interlaced, HDR, variable frame rate, or an unusual format. The example is a basic SDR profile and may need different handling.
- The script fails on a filter expression: CMD and FFmpeg have separate parsing rules; escaping may need adjustment for the shell. Test the exact command on one file before using it in a batch.
