Yes—OBS can usually play a video from a network drive if the drive is mounted on the computer running OBS and the account running OBS can read the file. OBS does not guarantee that every SMB, NFS, mapped-drive, or other network-share setup will work, so verify access and playback before going live.
How a network-drive video gets to YouTube
In OBS, a media file is an input to a scene; OBS composes the scene and sends its encoded output to YouTube. A mounted network share can serve as the media file’s location, provided OBS can access it. OBS’s Sources Guide explains how sources are used to build scenes and stream output.
This is different from entering a network-stream URL. For supported protocols, OBS documents using a Media Source with Local File unchecked and a URL entered as the input, including in its SRT and RIST guides. Those instructions do not establish compatibility with every share URL or protocol.
Set up a video from a mounted network share
- Mount the share on the OBS computer. Open the video from the operating-system account that will run OBS. Keep the share connected and available throughout the stream. A path that works in your desktop session may not be readable by OBS if it runs under a different account.
- Add the file in OBS. In the scene, add a Media Source and select the video using its mounted path. OBS lists common formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Use VLC Video for a playlist or broader media-library support. Install VLC first, matching its architecture to OBS: 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. VLC Video supports playlists and has a Network caching property whose documented default is 400 ms. That setting is not a guarantee against interruptions caused by a slow or unavailable share.
- Preview the scene. Confirm the video plays continuously and that its audio is audible and correctly routed in OBS. Test the actual share path before broadcasting; OBS and YouTube encourage testing and monitoring, but do not prescribe a specific test duration for this network-drive scenario.
- Connect OBS to YouTube Live. Get the stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s Live Control Room, then configure OBS as the encoder. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s general eligibility guidance says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; check your current account requirements in YouTube Studio. See Get started with live streaming.
- Check both network links. The computer needs reliable access to the share and enough outgoing internet upload bandwidth for its OBS stream. YouTube says the stream’s total bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. This is guidance for the encoder’s upload to YouTube; it does not quantify the share’s LAN read capacity. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
What to check before you rely on it
- Share access: Confirm the same OBS-running account can open the file at the mounted path. Network-share authentication, mounting behavior, and permissions vary by operating system and configuration.
- Playback continuity: Let the video run in the OBS preview and watch for pauses, failed reads, or a disconnected share. OBS does not publish SMB/NFS-specific performance guarantees or network-drive benchmarks in the cited guidance.
- Audio and composition: Verify that the scene contains the intended video and that audio is present in the OBS meters and preview.
- Upload headroom: Check that the outgoing stream bitrate fits the available internet upload capacity, allowing YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Broadcast rights: File access is not permission to rebroadcast. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match can cause a placeholder or interruption, and continued use may lead to termination. Even licensed material may require the rights owner to allowlist the channel through Content ID. You must have the necessary rights, including music rights. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and its livestream terms.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| OBS cannot find or open the file | The share is not mounted, the path changed, or the OBS account lacks access. | Reconnect the share, check the path, and verify file access as the same account that runs OBS. |
| Playback starts but pauses or stops | The share becomes unavailable or cannot supply the file reliably. | Check the share connection and playback in OBS before going live. The cited OBS guidance provides no universal network-share throughput guarantee. |
| Video works but audio is missing | The file’s audio is absent, muted, or not routed as expected in the scene. | Check the OBS audio meters and scene audio settings, then test again in preview. |
| OBS plays correctly, but the YouTube stream drops or looks unstable | Outgoing upload bandwidth may be insufficient for the encoder bitrate. | Check available upload capacity and leave the recommended 20% headroom. |
| YouTube replaces or interrupts the stream | A third-party-content match or rights issue may have triggered enforcement. | Review YouTube’s live copyright guidance and confirm you have the necessary rights; licensed content may still require Content ID allowlisting. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a prerecorded video or playlist to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving OBS and the network share running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed.
