Performing a song yourself does not automatically clear its copyright. Your cover uses the underlying musical composition—the music and lyrics—even if you never play the original artist’s recording. Before looping a cover on YouTube Live, check that you have rights for the live performance and any replay, and confirm whether the rights owner must add your channel to YouTube’s Content ID allowlist.
Why your own cover can still receive a copyright claim
A song can involve separate copyrights in its musical composition and in a particular sound recording. Singing and playing the song yourself may avoid using the original recording, but it does not remove the composition rights. The U.S. Copyright Office explains that “Copyright in a sound recording is not the same as, or a substitute for, copyright in the underlying musical composition.” U.S. Copyright Office: musical compositions and sound recordings.
YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the creator to have the rights needed for live content, including music licensing rights, and apply to archived content too. YouTube livestream terms. There is no general assurance in these rules that a self-performed cover is automatically cleared for every channel, song, territory, or use.
Clear the song and the planned use before going live
- Make a set list. Identify the songwriters and relevant publisher or rights holders for every composition you plan to perform. Treat each song as a separate rights question; clearance for one does not clear the others.
- Confirm the scope of permission. Ask whether the permission covers your live audiovisual stream and, if you intend to keep the replay, the archived version as well. Requirements can vary by song, territory, and license. For a specific song or jurisdiction, confirm the scope with the rights holder or a qualified music-rights professional.
- Check Content ID allowlisting. If you are relying on a license for third-party material, ask the rights owner or licensor whether your YouTube channel must be added to its Content ID allowlist. Confirm the channel is added before the broadcast. YouTube warns that a licensed stream may still be interrupted if the channel is not allowlisted. YouTube guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
- Clear everything else that can be heard. Do not leave commercial recordings or other third-party music playing in the background unless those uses are also covered. YouTube may identify material beyond the cover you are performing.
- Keep records. Save the license or written permission and any confirmation that your channel has been allowlisted. These records help you understand and address a match; they do not guarantee that automated systems will never flag the stream.
Live interruption and archive claim are different risks
| Where a match appears | What YouTube says can happen | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| During the live stream | YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt or terminate a stream when identified material remains. | Check YouTube Studio for the identified content and address it. If the stream stops, check the Studio dashboard for any strike information. |
| After the stream ends | If the livestream is archived, Content ID claims are made after it ends. | Inspect the claim details in YouTube Studio for the claimant, matched content, and any regional restrictions. Decide whether to leave the claim or use an available editing option. |
These are YouTube-specific platform procedures, not a determination that a particular song or performance is legally cleared. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

What to do if a stream is interrupted or an archive is claimed
If YouTube interrupts the live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and check the live-stream dashboard for the matched material and any strike information.
- Stop or remove the identified third-party content where possible. If you have a license, contact the rights owner or licensor about the match and verify the channel’s allowlist status.
- Do not assume that restarting the same performance will resolve the rights issue; address the identified material and confirm the relevant permissions first.
If a Content ID claim appears on the archive
- Review the claim details in YouTube Studio, including the claimant, matched section, and any regional availability restrictions.
- If the claim is valid, you can leave it in place or, where YouTube’s editor permits, remove, replace, or mute the claimed material.
- Dispute only if you have a legitimate basis, such as rights that cover the use or an applicable legal exception. Performing the cover yourself is not, by itself, that basis.
A Content ID claim is not the same as a copyright removal request or strike. Claims can affect monetization or where a video is available; YouTube explains the distinction in its copyright claim guidance.
Monetization does not replace permission
YouTube describes revenue sharing for some eligible cover videos claimed by publishers. If a video qualifies, YouTube may show a “Sharing ad earnings” notice. That feature is conditional and does not itself grant the rights needed to perform a song live or keep the archived stream available. YouTube: monetizing eligible cover videos.

A self-performed cover still uses the underlying composition. Confirm with the rights holder or a qualified music-rights professional what permission applies to your song, territory, live stream, and any replay.
Will YouTube claim my archived livestream?
YouTube says Content ID claims on archived livestreams are made after the stream ends. A claim is possible, not inevitable.
