You can reduce copyright risk on a 24/7 nature sounds stream, but you cannot guarantee that YouTube will never flag it. Use recordings you made yourself or audio whose license clearly covers your exact uses; keep the rights documentation; and, for licensed third-party audio, ask the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist before going live. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches and may interrupt them, while an archived stream can receive a Content ID claim after it ends. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance explains both stages.
Start with audio you can prove you have the right to use
The lowest-dependency option is a recording you made yourself. Make sure it is genuinely your recording and does not contain someone else’s protected material, such as music, a broadcast, or another recording picked up in the background. A portable recorder can help capture original field audio, but equipment does not prevent a copyright match or establish ownership by itself.
If you use another person’s nature recording, read the actual license rather than relying on labels such as “free” or “royalty-free.” YouTube says a description calling audio free does not prove that it is copyright-safe, and recommends checking licenses because they specify where and how audio may be used. YouTube’s copyright tips also recommends its Audio Library for copyright-safe music and sound effects. Check each asset’s terms; do not assume a library contains a nature recording cleared for every 24/7 format.
Check the license against your planned use
Before building a loop or playlist, confirm that the license covers the particular recording and the uses you intend. Check whether it permits:

These are practical clearance questions, not a substitute for the license itself. Keep a copy of the license and any receipt, plus the track title, owner or creator, source URL or catalog record, date obtained, and relevant terms.
Get Content ID handling sorted before the stream starts
A license and YouTube’s Content ID allowlisting process address different issues. YouTube advises creators using licensed third-party content in a live stream to ask the owner to add their channel to the owner’s Content ID allowlist. Without that action, a stream can still be interrupted even if the creator has a license. YouTube’s guidance for live streams says to contact the rights owner about allowlisting.
Ask the rights holder or licensing provider these questions about the specific recording:

- Is the recording enrolled in Content ID, and who administers it?
- Can the owner add your exact channel to its allowlist?
- What channel information or identifiers does the owner need, and when will allowlisting take effect?
- Does the permission cover both the live broadcast and the archived video?
A territorial restriction is not a substitute for allowlisting when the channel is not on the owner’s allowlist. Nor is an absence of past claims proof that a recording is cleared or that a future stream will not be matched.
Treat the live broadcast and its archive as two checks
While the stream is live
YouTube says it scans all live streams for matches to third-party content. If it detects material and it remains in the stream, YouTube may show a warning or placeholder image, temporarily interrupt the broadcast, or terminate it. For licensed third-party material, arrange the owner’s allowlisting action in advance; do not wait for an interruption to establish permission. Read YouTube’s live-stream rules.
After the broadcast ends
If you choose to archive the live stream, YouTube says it may make Content ID claims after the stream is complete. A live stream that ran without interruption is therefore not proof that its archive is clear. Check that your rights cover the archived video as well as the live use. Depending on the rights holder’s settings, a claim may block the video, monetize it for the rights holder, or track its viewing. YouTube explains Content ID claims and their effects.

Choose sources by rights, not by a “free” label
Compare prospective recordings on the points that determine whether they fit your stream: who owns the recording, what the license permits, whether the recording is Content ID registered, and whether the owner can allowlist your channel. Keep the supporting documents for the choice you make.
| Source | What to verify | Practical risk control |
|---|---|---|
| Your own field recording | That it is genuinely original and does not contain other protected material. | Keep the original files and recording notes. Your own recording avoids dependence on a third party’s license, but does not guarantee that YouTube will never make a mistaken match. |
| Third-party licensed recording | Live use, archive, monetization, territories, duration, editing or looping, attribution, and the account covered. | Retain the license and source details; ask the owner to allowlist your channel if the recording is in Content ID. |
| YouTube Audio Library asset | The individual asset’s terms and whether they suit your planned stream and archive. | YouTube recommends the Audio Library for copyright-safe music and sound effects. Do not assume a particular asset covers every use without checking its terms. |
| Audio described as “free” or “royalty-free” | The actual rights grant, owner, permitted uses, and Content ID arrangements. | Do not treat the label or a video description as proof of permission; YouTube says such a claim does not establish copyright safety. |
YouTube’s Creator Music is not a licensing route for the live portion of this format: its FAQ says Creator Music licensing currently does not support live content. Check the Creator Music FAQ. Do not confuse it with the Audio Library, or assume either source provides a suitable nature recording without checking that asset’s terms.

If YouTube interrupts the live stream
- Stop or replace the identified third-party material rather than continuing to loop it.
- Check YouTube Studio for the stated restriction or any strike, and identify the material YouTube has flagged.
- Contact the rights holder or licensing provider with the recording and channel details. If you have permission, ask them to confirm the license scope and handle allowlisting as applicable.
- Preserve your license and correspondence. Do not assume that having a license will automatically remove a live interruption if the channel has not been allowlisted.
If the archive receives a Content ID claim
Open the claim details in YouTube Studio to see the claimant and the matched material or segment. A Content ID claim is not itself a copyright strike; it can affect the video through blocking, monetization, or tracking. A copyright removal request is a separate process. YouTube’s claim guidance describes claim outcomes.

If you believe the match is wrong, dispute only when you are confident you have the necessary rights or another valid basis. YouTube says it does not decide copyright ownership or mediate ownership disputes; an unsupported dispute may be followed by a removal request, which can result in a strike if valid. YouTube’s copyright tips explains this distinction.
If the claim is valid, YouTube may offer options such as leaving it in place, trimming the claimed segment, muting audio, or replacing audio where available. Before editing in Studio Editor, preserve a copy: since June 2025, edits saved there have not been revertible through “Revert to original.” Check YouTube’s current claim-resolution and editing guidance.
