To play a playlist of prerecorded videos in a YouTube livestream, make a playlist from local files in OBS’s VLC Video source, schedule the live event separately in YouTube Studio, and connect OBS to the event with its stream URL and key. Those are separate steps: OBS does not automatically fetch and synchronize a playlist hosted on YouTube. The documented workflow is the same for creators in India; channel eligibility and verification rules still apply.
First, distinguish the playlist from the livestream
“YouTube live playlist” can mean two different things. An OBS playlist is a set of media files that OBS plays into its live video output. A YouTube playlist is a collection managed on YouTube. The official OBS and YouTube documentation describes these as separate features; it does not establish a built-in way for OBS to automatically follow a YouTube-hosted playlist.
For prerecorded files on your computer, use OBS to play them and send the resulting feed to a YouTube live event. YouTube Studio manages the event; OBS supplies the encoded audio and video. Looping a playlist changes playback behavior, not the event’s schedule.
Check YouTube eligibility before planning the stream
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube Help says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well ahead of your planned broadcast. This is the general documented workflow applied to a creator in India; the sources do not establish a separate India-only OBS setup. They also do not establish local internet-speed, payment, or availability guarantees.
Prepare media files and create the OBS playlist
Use VLC Video for multiple files
- Install OBS Studio and VLC media player. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. For 64-bit OBS, OBS documentation specifies installing 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, add a source to the scene that will go to YouTube and choose VLC Video. If the source is unavailable, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
- In the source properties, add the local video files to the playlist. Arrange them in the order you want them played.
- Choose the playback behavior in the source properties: enable looping to repeat the playlist, or shuffle if you want randomized order. These are playback controls; they do not schedule or restart a YouTube event.
- Preview the scene and check that each file plays with the intended picture and sound before going live.
Use Media Source for one file
For a single local video, add an OBS Media Source, select the file, and use its loop option if you want that file to repeat. OBS Media Source supports common local audio and video file types. It is not the multi-file playlist workflow; use VLC Video for a list of files.

Schedule the YouTube event and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. In the Manage tab, create a new stream or reuse settings from a previous stream, then schedule the event and set its title, description, visibility, and other event details. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe this scheduling flow.
- Review the event’s privacy and metadata before saving. A scheduled event can appear to subscribers as upcoming, and viewers may have the option to select Notify me; see YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
- In YouTube’s encoder setup, get the stream URL and stream key for the event. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose the YouTube service or enter the provided server details, and enter the stream key. Follow YouTube’s current encoder instructions if the labels differ in your account.
- Keep the stream key private: it allows an encoder to send video to your channel. Do not include it in screenshots, recordings, public code, or messages. If you believe it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the replacement.
- Start the OBS stream to send the encoder feed, then check the Live Control Room’s preview and status before relying on the event as live. Starting the feed and scheduling the event are distinct actions.
What can be automated beyond playlist playback?
Scheduling broadcasts through YouTube’s API
If you need software to create or manage scheduled broadcast events, the YouTube Live Streaming API provides broadcast and stream resources. Its documented recurring-broadcast pattern can bind one liveStream resource to scheduled liveBroadcast resources. That is API-level event management, not automatic synchronization of a YouTube playlist into OBS. See Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.

Controlling OBS scenes and sources
For external control of OBS scenes and sources, OBS WebSocket is included with OBS Studio 28 and later. It enables external tools to communicate with OBS; it does not replace YouTube event scheduling or the playlist source. Enable WebSocket authentication and protect its credentials. OBS explains the feature in its remote-control guide.
These options serve different jobs: YouTube Studio or its API manages broadcasts, VLC Video manages local playlist playback, and OBS WebSocket can control OBS. A sequence involving all three still needs to be configured and tested for the desired schedule; the documented features alone do not guarantee unattended continuity.

Rights, continuity, and preflight checks
- Secure the rights or permissions needed to livestream every video and audio track in the playlist. Having a file or finding it online does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it.
- Test the complete intended workflow before an important event: playlist order, loop or shuffle behavior, audio levels, scene framing, scheduled event, and OBS connection.
- Plan what should happen when files end, OBS stops, the computer loses power, or the connection drops. Looping the VLC playlist only addresses media playback; it does not promise that OBS or the YouTube broadcast will recover.
- For a production that includes a camera, game, or other external input, configure those sources separately. A prerecorded playlist alone does not require a camera or capture card.
Troubleshooting
VLC Video is missing from the source list
Install VLC and make sure its architecture matches OBS. OBS’s documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. Restart OBS after installation if the source still does not appear.
The playlist stops instead of repeating
Check the VLC Video source’s loop setting. Confirm that you changed the playback option rather than a YouTube event setting; event scheduling does not control source looping.

YouTube shows no encoder preview
Check that OBS is configured for the correct YouTube stream URL and current stream key, and that you have started the OBS feed. Confirm that the event is the one you intended to schedule. If the key may be compromised or was reset, replace the key in OBS.
The broadcast is not available when expected
Check the event’s scheduled time and privacy settings in Live Control Room, then check whether OBS is sending its feed. If this is the channel’s first livestream, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours; verify the channel and check for restrictions.
OBS controls work locally but not through WebSocket
Confirm that the external tool is connecting to the correct OBS WebSocket endpoint and that authentication settings match. Do not disable authentication to work around a credential mismatch; update the client configuration and keep credentials private.
