If your Castr YouTube stream keeps disconnecting, first check whether the source feed also disappears from Castr’s preview. A failed preview points you toward the encoder, local network, or ingest path; a healthy preview while YouTube stops receiving the broadcast points you toward the destination setup or YouTube’s Go Live flow. That split is a diagnostic approach, not a guaranteed diagnosis. Castr’s Help Center says many stream-quality problems begin with the source encoder or streaming software, but your own preview and health data are what matter for this incident.
First identify where the stream breaks
At the next interruption, note the time and check the Castr preview. Castr’s setup guide documents a source preview, and its Input Health charts can be inspected live or after a session.
- Preview or input also stops: investigate the encoder, broadcaster’s network, and route to Castr’s ingest server first.
- Preview stays live, but YouTube is missing or stopped: inspect the YouTube destination and the platform’s start flow.
This distinction follows Castr’s separate input-monitoring and destination setup guidance; it does not prove the cause by itself. See Castr’s stream quality troubleshooting guide, setup guide, and health monitoring guide.
Check encoder settings and health charts
Castr’s Help Center guide, published March 18, 2026, gives these as starting recommendations—not universal YouTube requirements:

| Setting | Castr’s starting recommendation |
|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264 |
| Audio codec | AAC |
| Rate control | Constant bitrate (CBR) |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds |
| Frame rate | 30 FPS, or 60 FPS if the connection can support the higher bitrate |
| Video bitrate for 720p | 2,500–4,000 Kbps |
| Video bitrate for 1080p | 3,500–6,500 Kbps |
| Stereo audio bitrate | 128 Kbps |
Compare Castr’s video and audio bitrate and frame-rate charts with the interruption time. Castr says a steady bitrate graph is characteristic of CBR; sudden bitrate drops can indicate a connection issue, while frame drops can indicate that the encoder or connection is struggling. Treat those patterns as clues, not proof.
Castr says charts are available for live and past sessions and session data is retained for 10 days. Review or save relevant data promptly. Details are in its quality troubleshooting guide and health monitoring guide.
Verify upload capacity and the local network
Castr recommends broadcaster upload capacity of at least 1.5 times the stream bitrate. For example, a 5,000 Kbps stream bitrate calls for at least 7,500 Kbps (7.5 Mbps) upload capacity. This is an upload target for the broadcaster, not a viewer playback-speed recommendation.

- Use Ethernet where practical. Castr notes that Wi-Fi can introduce packet loss and latency spikes.
- Pause competing upload-heavy activity such as cloud syncing, downloads, or video calls during a test.
- Check that available upload capacity remains stable while streaming, rather than relying only on a speed result taken at another time.
If your computer needs a wired connection and lacks a suitable cable, a Cat6 Ethernet cable is one way to connect it. The cable only enables that wired connection; it cannot fix encoder settings, a bad stream key, destination errors, or every network problem. Castr’s troubleshooting guide covers its upload and network recommendations. Its separate network requirements page discusses viewer playback speeds, which should not be substituted for the broadcaster upload target above.

Test the route to Castr’s ingest server
Castr recommends choosing an ingest server geographically close to the broadcaster: a distant server can add latency and increase the chance of packet loss. If the source is using RTMP and remains unstable, Castr suggests testing SRT, which it describes as designed for unreliable networks and automatic packet-loss recovery. A protocol change is an experiment, not a guaranteed repair.
Castr’s setup guide documents RTMP/RTMPS, SRT, and WHIP source modes. Confirm which mode your encoder and Castr configuration support before changing it; then test for long enough to see whether the interruption recurs. See the troubleshooting guide and setup guide.

Inspect the YouTube destination and Go Live flow
Castr documents two ways to connect a YouTube destination: an API connection, or a YouTube server and stream key. Its guidance says to toggle an added destination off while the source is offline, then turn it on when the encoder source is live.
- With the encoder source offline, turn the YouTube destination off in Castr.
- Start the encoder and confirm the feed is visible in Castr preview.
- Turn the destination on and check whether YouTube receives the stream and presents its Go Live flow.
- If using a server-and-key destination that still fails, Castr’s older troubleshooting article suggests deleting and re-adding the destination, replacing the stream key, and staying on YouTube’s Go Live page to start the broadcast.
The reconnect advice was published in 2022, so dashboard labels and YouTube interface steps may have changed. Before replacing a key, make sure the encoder and Castr are using the current matching key. Castr’s documentation covers adding YouTube as a destination and YouTube stream reconnect troubleshooting.
Rehearse privately before the next event
Use a private or unlisted test broadcast to separate input and destination behavior without making a public broadcast. First confirm the encoder feed in Castr preview with destinations off, then enable the YouTube destination and follow YouTube’s Go Live flow. Monitor Castr Input Health while the test runs.

Run the rehearsal for at least as long as the expected event, since a brief successful test cannot establish that a recurring dropout is resolved. Castr recommends monitoring Input Health during testing; see its pre-live testing guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Prepare a backup if interruption is unacceptable
After investigating the immediate failure, consider whether the event needs a continuity plan. Castr’s setup guide describes two backup options:
- Encoder-level backup: configure a second encoder as a backup source.
- File-level backup: configure a backup VOD to use if the live input drops.
Castr says backup must be configured while the stream is disabled, and enabling it changes stream keys. Check the current dashboard instructions and update the affected encoder or destination configuration before relying on the backup for a live event. See Castr’s setup guide.

Common symptoms and what to check
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Castr preview stops and bitrate drops at the same time | Encoder output, upload stability, competing network use, and ingest-server distance. |
| Frame drops appear around the interruption | Whether the encoder or connection is struggling at the selected frame rate and bitrate. |
| Castr preview remains healthy, but YouTube does not receive or start the stream | Destination status, current stream key if using server/key mode, and YouTube’s Go Live flow. |
| RTMP input remains unstable | Test a closer ingest server and, if supported by the setup, SRT; compare health data before and after. |
| The stream fails only after a key or backup change | Confirm the current matching key is configured in the encoder and destination, using Castr’s current dashboard guidance. |
Viewer-side buffering is a different symptom from a source-to-platform disconnect. Adaptive bitrate playback can adjust the quality a viewer receives, but it does not by itself establish or fix an unstable encoder-to-Castr input.
