The theme is Undercurrents, counterspells, and English is the seminar’s main language. To attend, register through the organizer’s official 2026 event announcement, choose the fee category that fits you, and arrange accommodation before submitting your registration because places and local lodging are limited.
Your registration covers the seminar programme, screenings, activities, debates, and all meals except breakfast. You must pay separately for accommodation and travel to and from Odemira. This guide explains the fees, registration process, transport choices, accommodation logistics, cancellation rule, and the separate Dear Doc fellowship route.
What Doc’s Kingdom 2026 is and where it happens
Doc’s Kingdom is an international documentary-film seminar built around screenings, debates, walks, and shared activities rather than a conventional trade conference. The 2026 edition is based in Odemira, in Portugal’s Alentejo region. Most venues are in central Odemira and are within short walking distances of one another. One day takes place in the nearby village of São Luís; the organization says it will provide transport for that outing.
The programme begins on the evening of Friday, November 13, and ends shortly before lunchtime on Wednesday, November 18. Plan to be available for the full period rather than treating the event as a single screening or weekend festival. The stated theme is Undercurrents, counterspells. English is the seminar’s main working language, so participants who can follow discussions in English should be able to take part in the core programme.

Check these practical facts before you register
- Dates: evening of November 13 through before lunchtime on November 18, 2026.
- Base: Odemira, Portugal, with one programme day in São Luís.
- Language: English is the main seminar language.
- Capacity: places are limited and processed in the order registrations are received.
- Included: screenings, activities, debates, and every meal except breakfast.
- Not included: accommodation and travel to and from Odemira.
- Planning warning: local accommodation is limited, so the organizer recommends finding a place to stay before registering.
How much does Doc’s Kingdom cost?
The organizer lists four 2026 registration levels. Select the lowest category for which you genuinely qualify; the reduced rates are tied to residence, location, study, or membership conditions.
| 2026 fee | Who it is for | What the fee covers | What you still pay separately |
|---|---|---|---|
| €220 | Odemira residents; students based in Portugal; Apordoc or MUTIM members | Seminar access, screenings, activities, debates, and meals except breakfast | Accommodation and travel to and from Odemira |
| €250 | Residents of Portugal and participants from the Global South | Seminar access, screenings, activities, debates, and meals except breakfast | Accommodation and travel to and from Odemira |
| €350 | International participants who do not use a reduced category | Seminar access, screenings, activities, debates, and meals except breakfast | Accommodation and travel to and from Odemira |
| €380 or more | Supportive-contribution participants, such as institution-funded attendees or people able to support the seminar and its Dear Doc fellowships | Seminar access, screenings, activities, debates, and meals except breakfast | Accommodation and travel to and from Odemira |
These amounts apply to the 2026 edition and should be confirmed on the official event page immediately before payment. The supportive-contribution level starts at €380 rather than setting a fixed upper limit.
What your registration includes—and what it does not
Included in the registration fee
- Entry to the scheduled documentary screenings.
- Participation in the seminar’s activities and debates.
- Meals during the event, with breakfast specifically excluded.
- Organization-provided transport for the programme day in São Luís, according to the event arrangements.
Excluded from the registration fee
- A room, apartment, hostel bed, or other accommodation in Odemira or elsewhere.
- Your journey from your home to Portugal and your return trip.
- Local travel costs that fall outside any transport arranged by the organization.
- Breakfasts, which you should budget for separately.
Because accommodation and long-distance travel are outside the fee, the headline registration price is not the complete cost of attending. Compare the categories by eligibility first, then add lodging, breakfast, and transport to your personal budget.
How to register for Doc’s Kingdom
- Open the official 2026 announcement. Use the registration link published by Doc’s Kingdom rather than an old event page or a third-party listing.
- Check capacity before making non-refundable travel plans. The organizer states that registrations are limited and will be filled in order of receipt. A completed form does not remove the need to verify that places remain available.
- Arrange accommodation. Local availability is limited. The event page recommends contacting hotels and guesthouses directly by email or telephone and says the registration form contains group chats for participants looking for shared accommodation.
- Choose your fee category. Select €220 only if you are an Odemira resident, a student based in Portugal, or an Apordoc or MUTIM member. Select €250 if you live in Portugal or are from the Global South. Use €350 for the standard international category. Choose €380 or more if you are institution-funded or want to make a supportive contribution.
- Complete the form with accurate travel and lodging information. If you will stay outside Odemira, note the location and contact the team about transport rather than assuming a shuttle will be available.
- Save the confirmation and payment details. Keep the organizer’s confirmation, the address of your accommodation, and any transport instructions together so you can retrieve them while travelling.
Registration is not a guaranteed walk-in option. If the event reaches capacity, later applicants may not be admitted even if they have already started planning a trip.

Staying in central Odemira is the simplest arrangement because the principal venues are within walking distance. It also reduces your dependence on an organization shuttle whose availability depends on demand and scheduling.
Book before submitting the form
The organizer explicitly recommends arranging accommodation before registering. Contact local hotels and guesthouses directly by email or telephone, ask for the exact dates of November 13–18, and confirm check-in and check-out times. If your arrival is late on November 13 or your departure is early on November 18, ask whether reception can accommodate those hours.
Use participant accommodation groups
The registration form includes group chats for attendees seeking shared accommodation. These chats can help you find a room share or coordinate a larger rental, but confirm the address, price, payment method, cancellation terms, and who is responsible for the booking before sending money. A shared address outside Odemira changes your transport needs, so include it in your planning.
Staying outside Odemira
Nearby lodging may offer more availability, but the organization says any shuttle for participants staying outside Odemira depends on a set schedule and is not guaranteed. If you choose this option, contact the team with your lodging location by October 13, 2026, so it can assess demand. Do not book an out-of-town room on the assumption that a shuttle will run at the times you need.

Your best arrival method depends on whether you value flexibility, a lower-complexity public-transport journey, or a shared-cost option. The event information mentions buses from Lisbon, participant-arranged shared rides, private vehicles, and a possible shuttle for out-of-town lodging.
| Option | Best for | Important planning point |
|---|---|---|
| Bus from Lisbon | Travelers arriving in Lisbon without a car | Check the current route, departure point, timetable, and arrival stop on the official event page; these details can change. |
| Shared ride | Participants who can coordinate with others | The organizer mentions a group chat for shared rides. Confirm the driver, meeting point, luggage space, cost sharing, and return plan. |
| Your own vehicle | Attendees staying outside town or wanting flexibility | The organizer encourages bringing a vehicle because it makes local movement easier, especially when lodging is not central. |
| Organization shuttle | Participants lodging outside Odemira when service is offered | Availability depends on a set schedule and demand; it is not guaranteed. Send your lodging location to the team by October 13. |
Arriving by bus
The event page refers to bus travel from Lisbon and asks readers to check the current route and departure information. Treat the bus as a connection that must be verified close to departure: schedules, stops, and operating days can change. Allow extra time between your international arrival in Lisbon and the bus departure, and keep the Odemira accommodation address available for the final leg.
Driving or sharing a car
The organizer encourages participants to bring their own vehicles for greater flexibility. A car is particularly useful if your accommodation is outside the town center, if you need to reach the São Luís programme day independently, or if you arrive outside the times covered by a group transfer. Shared rides can reduce cost, but agree in advance how fuel, tolls, parking, delays, and the return trip will be handled.
Connecting from accommodation outside town
Tell the organization where you are staying by October 13 if you want it to assess shuttle demand. Ask for the actual timetable once it is known and build a backup plan, such as a taxi, a shared ride, or your own vehicle. The existence of a shuttle cannot be treated as a promise of door-to-door transport.
Rank #3
What the five-day programme means for your schedule
The opening evening on November 13 and the closing period before lunchtime on November 18 mean that a short, single-night visit will miss most of the seminar. Reserve enough time for arrival before the first evening and departure after the closing activities. Meals are included except breakfast, so breakfast planning matters every morning even when the rest of your daytime food is covered.
Expect the programme to combine film screenings with conversations, debates, walks, and other shared activities. The Portugal Film Commission describes the seminar in those terms, which means comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are more useful than a conference-only wardrobe. Central venues are close together, but the São Luís day involves organized travel outside Odemira.
Language and participation
English is the main language of the seminar. If you are not fully comfortable speaking, you can still prepare by reading the published programme, noting questions in advance, and carrying a notebook or translation app for personal reference. The main practical issue is not a formal language certificate but being able to follow screenings’ introductions, debates, and day-to-day announcements in English.
Because activities take place in several venues, check the daily meeting point rather than assuming every session starts at the same address. Walking distances in central Odemira are short, while the São Luís day uses organization-provided transport according to the event plan.
Dear Doc fellowships: a separate route for eligible applicants
Dear Doc offered six fellowships connected with the 2026 programme, but the application deadline of August 23, 2026 has passed. The fellowships are not an alternative registration button that guarantees entry to the seminar; they require selection and acceptance.
Who the six fellowships targeted
- Four places: students or emerging cinema professionals of Portuguese nationality or resident in Portugal.
- Two programmer places: programmers or curators of any nationality who had at least three previous professional programming experiences.
What a fellowship covered
Selected fellows received participation, meals, accommodation, and on-site transport. Travel from the fellow’s home to Odemira was not covered, so even a successful applicant needed to budget for the journey to Portugal and back.
How the fellowship schedule differed
The call described additional activities beginning November 11 and required fellows to participate in the full November 11–18 programme. That is two days earlier than the general seminar opening. A fellowship application did not itself guarantee a seminar place; only selection and acceptance under the call’s terms did.

The registration page states that a cancellation made by October 13 receives a 50% refund. After October 13, no refund is issued. October 13, 2026 is the date attached to the published 2026 terms, so check the current cancellation conditions immediately before committing money; event policies can be updated.
Recommended Free Tools
This deadline also matters for transport planning. Participants staying outside Odemira are asked to provide their lodging location by October 13 so the organization can assess shuttle demand. Keep those two October 13 obligations together in your calendar.
Build a realistic attendance budget
| Budget item | What is established for 2026 | How to plan |
|---|---|---|
| Registration | €220, €250, €350, or €380-plus depending on category | Choose the category you can document and confirm the amount on the official page. |
| Accommodation | Not stated; excluded from registration | Obtain a real quote before registering, especially in central Odemira. |
| Travel to and from Odemira | Not stated; excluded from registration | Price your Lisbon connection, bus, shared ride, car, or other route separately. |
| Breakfast | Excluded from registration | Ask your lodging whether breakfast is available and add daily food costs if it is not. |
| Local transport outside the programme | Not stated | Keep a contingency for taxis or other travel if you stay outside town or miss a scheduled transfer. |
Do not use the registration fee as a proxy for the total trip cost. The largest variation is likely to come from lodging and the distance of your journey to Portugal, neither of which is priced in the event information.
Arrival checklist
- Confirm that the 2026 registration form is still accepting places.
- Save the organizer’s confirmation and payment receipt.
- Reserve accommodation before registration whenever possible.
- Record the full lodging address and whether it is inside Odemira.
- If outside town, send the location to the team by October 13 and request the current shuttle information.
- Verify the Lisbon–Odemira bus route or arrange a shared ride.
- Bring comfortable footwear for walks between venues and outdoor activities.
- Plan breakfast for each morning.
- Carry a compatible travel adapter if your devices require one; Portugal’s electrical system and your own plugs should be checked before departure.
- Keep a backup local-transport plan in case a conditional shuttle is unavailable.
Common planning mistakes and how to avoid them
Waiting to book a room
Central accommodation can become scarce while the event still has registration capacity. Contact lodging providers first and use the participant group chats if a shared room is practical.
Assuming the fee includes a bed
It does not. Accommodation is explicitly outside registration, as are journeys to and from Odemira.

Relying on an unconfirmed shuttle
The possible shuttle for out-of-town participants depends on demand and a fixed schedule. Send your location by the stated date and keep another transport option.
Using the wrong reduced fee
The €220 and €250 rates have specific eligibility rules. If your status is unclear, ask the organizer before paying rather than selecting a category on assumption.
Arriving only for the headline screenings
The seminar is a multi-day programme of films, discussions, walks, and shared activities. Plan around the full November 13–18 period if you want the experience described by the organizers.
Is Doc’s Kingdom 2026 right for you?
This seminar suits viewers, filmmakers, programmers, students, and researchers who want sustained engagement with documentary cinema in a small-town setting rather than a brief festival stop. It is a practical fit if you can attend for nearly five days, participate in English, and arrange your own lodging and travel. The event is less suitable for a traveler who needs guaranteed last-minute accommodation, a fully packaged transport service, or a programme conducted primarily in another language.
For 2026, the essential decision is logistical: secure a place while capacity remains, secure a bed before committing, and choose transport that does not depend on an unconfirmed shuttle. Once those pieces are in place, the registration fee gives you access to the screenings, activities, debates, and included meals that make up the seminar.
