Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Start the manual list at 00:00, include at least three timestamps in ascending order, and make each chapter at least 10 seconds long. A podcast playlist organizes episodes; it does not add chapters to a replay.
Podcast episodes and replay chapters are separate
YouTube treats a podcast show as a playlist and its episodes as videos in that playlist. Chapters, by contrast, are time markers attached to an individual video through its description. Adding a livestream replay to a podcast playlist can organize it as an episode, but it will not create chapter markers.
This workflow is for dividing one saved replay into sections. It does not automatically turn separate podcast episodes into segments within a live replay.
Add manual chapters to the replay
- Confirm the replay exists. In YouTube Studio, locate the completed stream or its replay. If there is no archived video, there is nothing to add chapters to. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, recommends keeping a local recording as backup, and warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. See YouTube’s guidance on archiving live streams.
- Open the replay’s video details. Select the replay in Studio and edit its description.
- Enter the chapter list in the description. Put each timestamp and title on its own line. Begin at
00:00; include at least three timestamps, in ascending order; and ensure each chapter is at least 10 seconds long. For example, using the actual times from your replay:00:00 Introduction 04:18 Topic one 17:42 Listener questions - Save the description and check the watch page. YouTube documents saving the chapter list in the description, but does not specify a guaranteed display time.
For example, a chapter starting at 04:18 must be followed by the next chapter at least 10 seconds later. Use timestamps that match the replay’s actual timeline, not the time you began recording or the time a topic appeared in your podcast rundown.

Manual versus automatic chapters
| Method | How it works | Requirements and limits | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual timestamps | You choose the chapter boundaries and titles in the video description. | Start at 00:00; use at least three timestamps in ascending order; chapters must be at least 10 seconds long. Manual chapters override automatic chapters. |
Matching the episode rundown or naming sections precisely. |
| Automatic chapters | YouTube may generate chapter breaks. | Allow automatic chapters in the video’s settings. YouTube says this is allowed by default for new uploads, but not every video is eligible and generation is not guaranteed. | Trying generated sections when exact boundaries are not essential. |
YouTube’s Video Chapters guidance covers the timestamp rules and automatic-chapter setting. It does not establish that every livestream replay is eligible for automatic chapters. If you need particular sections to appear, use manual timestamps.
Add the replay to the podcast playlist separately
If the replay is a full-length podcast episode, add that video to the playlist you use as the podcast in YouTube Studio. This helps organize the show, while the chapter list remains in the replay video’s description. YouTube notes that some playlists are not eligible for podcast features, including some playlists containing content the creator does not own. See Create a podcast in YouTube Studio.

Troubleshoot missing chapters or replay
The replay is not listed in Studio
Check the Live tab for an archived replay and confirm that YouTube captured the stream. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured; keep a local recording as a backup for future streams.
The description has timestamps, but chapters do not appear
- Check that the first timestamp is exactly
00:00. - Confirm there are at least three timestamps and that they ascend in time.
- Make sure no chapter is shorter than 10 seconds.
- Save the corrected description again, then inspect the replay’s watch page.
You expected YouTube to generate chapters
Check whether automatic chapters are allowed in the replay’s settings. Even when allowed, eligibility and generation are conditional. A manual list gives you control over the boundaries.

The replay is missing from the podcast surface
Confirm that you added the video to the podcast playlist and that the playlist contains full-length episodes. Playlist organization and chapters are separate: the playlist helps present the show, while timestamps in the video description create chapter markers.
The replay is processing or Studio looks different
YouTube’s published guidance does not give a fixed processing wait time or a livestream-specific chapter exception. Recheck the saved video details and current Studio guidance; do not assume a specific delay guarantees chapters will appear. For information about replay and highlight availability, see Archive live streams and Learn about live streams.
