You can add a song to the profile area beneath or near your Instagram bio in the mobile app. Open Profile → Edit profile, choose Music or Add music to your profile, select a track and a short excerpt, then tap Done. This adds a separate profile-music element; it does not put an audio player inside the written bio. The option and available songs can vary by account, location and app interface.
How to add music to your Instagram profile
Use the Instagram app on your iPhone or Android phone. Menu labels can differ between accounts and app versions, so look for the equivalent profile-music control if the wording below does not match your screen. Instagram’s help page describes the feature as adding music to your profile; a walkthrough shows the profile-editing path and its interface variations.
- Open Instagram and tap your profile picture in the bottom-right corner.
- Tap Edit profile.
- Look for Music, Add music to your profile, or a Banner option that contains the music control.
- Tap Pick a song for your profile or the plus button.
- Search by song title or artist, or browse Instagram’s suggestions. The selection comes from Instagram’s music catalog, not an arbitrary audio-file upload.
- Tap the song you want, choose the excerpt, and tap Done.
- Return to your profile and check that the song appears near the bio.
The precise labels and placement vary. Some interfaces show Music directly in Edit profile; others put it under Banner. The steps are documented in this profile-music walkthrough.
Choose a short excerpt, not a whole track
Instagram’s profile song is a preview rather than a full-song upload. Select the part you want using the waveform or duration control; Instagram may initially suggest a popular section, and you can move the selection to another part of the track. Coverage of the feature reports a maximum of up to 30 seconds, though the available excerpt can depend on the track and the controls Instagram shows. What visitors see and hear
The selected song appears in the profile area near the bio. It does not start automatically when someone opens your profile: visitors tap the play control or song title to hear the excerpt. The feature is distinct from adding music to a Story, Reel or feed post, which uses separate controls. Music availability and playback can differ for visitors because catalog rights vary by region and account. Change or remove the profile song
Replace it with another song
- Open your profile and tap Edit profile.
- Open Music, Banner, or the current profile-song control.
- Tap the edit or pencil icon, if shown, and select another song.
- Choose its excerpt and tap Done.
On some interfaces, tapping the existing song on your profile opens its editing controls directly.
Remove it
Open the same Music or Banner controls and choose the option to clear or remove the current song. Alternatively, tap the song on your profile and select Remove profile song if that option appears. The wording and route can vary by app version; this walkthrough covers the available interface variations.

If the Music option is missing
A missing control does not automatically mean you have missed a step. Try these checks in order:

- Update the app. Install the latest Instagram version available from your app store, then fully close and reopen Instagram.
- Check Edit profile again. Look for Music, Add music to your profile, or Music inside Banner.
- Use the mobile app. The documented setup flow is in the app; desktop and mobile-web controls may not offer the same option.
- Compare account types. Some business accounts have restricted access to licensed music. Creator and personal accounts are not interchangeable with every business account for catalog access.
- Consider location and rollout. Music licensing differs by country or region, and feature availability may vary by account. Meta says some business accounts and some regions have restricted access to its licensed music library.
- Try signing out and back in if the setting still seems to be missing after updating. This may address a local app issue, but it cannot override regional licensing or account eligibility.
Meta’s explanation of licensed music on Instagram describes restrictions for some business accounts and countries or regions. Avoid third-party apps that claim to unlock the feature: they cannot reliably change Instagram’s account-level or licensing rules.
Business accounts, rights and regional catalog limits
Professional accounts can be Creator or Business accounts, and music access is not identical for every account. Meta says its licensed music library is intended primarily for personal, non-commercial use, so some business accounts may have limited access; this is not a blanket statement that all business accounts are blocked. If you are using music to market a brand, do not assume that a track available for a personal profile is cleared for commercial promotion. Meta points users who lack access to licensed music toward Sound Collection, which it describes as royalty-free music and sounds for eligible Instagram uses, including ads. That is not a guaranteed way to add a particular track to the profile-song feature.
A song may be missing from search because it is not licensed for your account or region. Try searching the title and artist separately, checking spelling or an alternate version, or searching for the official recording rather than a remix. A track can also become unavailable if licensing changes, and a visitor in another country may not have the same playback access.

If you want to promote your own music
The profile-song selector uses Instagram’s catalog; it does not provide a supported promise that you can upload any MP3 directly into the profile-music slot. For a full track, several releases, or a destination you control, put a streaming, release or link-hub URL in your written bio. Stories and Reels have their own music tools and rights conditions, so they are separate from profile music.
