Instagram Reels supports up to 20 audio tracks in a single Reel. In the mobile Reel editor, add a first track, then look for Add to mix to select more; you can trim the tracks and arrange their sections against your video. The limit is for audio tracks available to your account—not a promise that every user can choose any 20 commercial songs. Access and song selection depend on your app, account, location and music rights.
What Instagram’s 20-track feature does
Instagram introduced multitrack audio for Reels in July 2024. The launch workflow, reported by TechCrunch, lets a creator add up to 20 audio tracks to one Reel, trim each selection and arrange the mix in the editor. Instagram’s layout can change, so the button name or placement may vary by app version, device or account.
“Audio tracks” is the useful distinction: tracks can include music or other audio Instagram makes available to you. This is not a tool for importing 20 arbitrary songs from your phone into Instagram’s licensed library, nor a full audio workstation with advanced mixing and mastering. It is suited to short segments—such as a song change at a scene cut, a sound effect at a reveal, or different music for a montage.
How to add songs to a Reel
- Open the Reels composer in the Instagram mobile app. Record a Reel or add video clips from your phone.
- Open the editing controls. Look for Audio, the music-note control or the equivalent music option in your version of the editor.
- Add the first track. Search for and select an available song or audio clip.
- Add another track. Look for Add to mix, then search for and select the next audio. Repeat for additional tracks, up to the reported 20-track maximum.
- Trim and position each selection. Choose the portion you want and arrange it so it starts at the intended point in the Reel. Use the editor’s available controls; exact placement and labels may differ.
- Preview the Reel from the beginning. Listen for abrupt starts, overlaps or changes that miss the corresponding visual moment. Adjust or remove tracks as needed.
- Finish the post. Add the cover, caption and other posting details, then share when the edit is ready.
The 20-track limit and “Add to mix” workflow come from reporting on Instagram’s launch; Meta’s audio guidance explains the audio types Reels can use, but does not document the multitrack button sequence in the same detail.

Arrange tracks so the Reel stays clear
- Use only the sections you need. Short excerpts can mark an intro, transition, reveal or punchline without making every track run for the full video.
- Make audio changes serve a visual moment. Try aligning a change with a cut, movement, title card or transition, then preview it to catch awkward timing.
- Keep one element dominant. If the Reel contains narration, dialogue or instructions, avoid a busy music mix that makes speech hard to hear.
- Count effects and original audio as part of the mix. More tracks do not automatically make a better edit; frequent changes can sound cluttered.
Which audio can you use?
Meta describes Reels audio as original audio you create, original audio from another creator, or licensed audio from Instagram’s music library. These categories are not interchangeable when it comes to rights or availability.
- Your own original recording: You can use audio you created or have permission to use. Uploading copyrighted music does not by itself make it yours or grant publishing rights.
- Another creator’s original audio: Reels may let you use audio from another creator. Meta says that on a public account, other people may be able to make Reels using your original audio. If an upload is recognized as licensed music, Instagram may label it with the artist and song information. See Meta’s audio guidance.
- Instagram’s licensed music library: The catalog is subject to rights and availability rules. A song may be missing for a particular account or region, and access may change.
Music rights: personal Reels, business posts and ads
Meta says its licensed music library is intended for personal, non-commercial use. Some business accounts and regions have restricted access; eligible users without access may be offered Meta Sound Collection instead. Meta describes Sound Collection as royalty-free music and sounds available for Reels and Stories, including commercial uses such as ads. Check the current catalog and terms for your account in Meta’s music guidance.

Do not assume that a popular song available in the normal Reel editor is cleared for a business promotion, branded content or paid ad. Ads Manager has a separate music workflow; Meta’s documentation describes options involving Sound Collection and a manual selection of up to five songs for ad delivery. That is separate from the organic-Reel multitrack feature and its reported 20-track limit. Consult Meta’s Instagram ads music guidance for that workflow.
Music rights can also change after publishing. Meta warns that licensed audio may later be muted if agreements change, while the video itself can remain viewable. For work that needs to stay usable, keep a clean, appropriately licensed master and preserve your edit decisions outside Instagram. If a track is central to an evergreen post, check the published Reel periodically and replace or re-edit its audio if Instagram offers that option. If “Add to mix” or a song is missing
A missing control or song can reflect a local app issue, a rollout difference, account restrictions or music licensing—not necessarily a problem with the Reel itself. Try these checks in order:
- Update Instagram through your device’s official app store, then force-close and reopen it.
- Start a new Reel rather than relying on an older draft, and look through the current editing controls for the audio or music option.
- Confirm you are using the mobile app; do not assume desktop editing has the same feature.
- If you can, compare with another account. If the control appears there but not on yours, availability may be account-specific.
- Try a different track. If only one song is missing, its catalog or rights availability may be the issue.
- Check whether your account type or region limits licensed music. Meta outlines those restrictions and Sound Collection access in its music availability guidance.
- If the licensed library is unavailable, use audio you have permission to use or an appropriate Sound Collection option. Save a draft before making major changes.
- If the feature remains unavailable, an external editor can help you assemble a mix, but it cannot grant rights to music you do not have permission to publish.
Updating or reinstalling may address a local app problem, but neither guarantees access to a feature controlled by account rollout or licensing.

Instagram’s native editor is a practical choice for short, mobile-first edits using audio available to your account. Choose another editor when you need more exact control or a reusable project, while securing the necessary rights separately.
